2011-04-16 Thread Rick Womer
Very nice! When I click on the pic to enlarge it, there is still some motion
blur in the surfer, even at 1/750--might have traded a stop of aperture (was
f/13) for a faster shutter.

Re: PESO: Surfer

2011-04-16 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for the comments, Rick, Jack and drd.

I had to guess about shutter speed and aperture. I was on a rise
overlooking Ho'opika Beach on the North Shore of Maui. The sun was
very bright, and my eyesight is not what it used to be, so my ability
to judge how the images were coming out was limited. I was also quite
far away, using an 80-200 zoom. Even then, This image has been
cropped quite a bit. All in all, I am relatively happy with it,
although it could certainly be sharper.

Re: PESO: Surfer

2017-02-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Ken.

No, that is NOT me. I did take surfing lessons in my 50, however. The
Nancy Emerson School of Surfing had a local TV ad of a dog riding a wave on
a long board, with Nancy's voiceover saying "If I can teach my dog to surf,
I can teach ANYONE to surf. I went out there and gave it the old college
try. I was amaze how hard it is to paddle the board out, since width of
the board require one to stretch our one's arms and paddle mostly with the
lower arms. I got up a few times. I had one really nice ride, and was
doing great until I look up and saw the sea wall rushing towards me. It
was a lot farther away than appeared, but the image of crashing into the
wall caused me to lose my balance and fall off a bit early.

There are surfers out here my age and older, but for me it's "been there,
done that," and a much safer sourney in an outrigger canoe.

Awesome shot, I love photos of water through waves.

I think the shot could be improved by trimming off some of the left and
bottom. approximately at the end of the spray from his board (on my
screen it's the left apostrophe, and about half the space "under" the board.

And, no, I'm not just jealous because that's better than any surfing

Re: PESO: Surfer Chick

2016-04-09 Thread Jack Davis
A couple summers ago I went to a local public swimming pool with the idea of
shooting some swimming and diving action.
When I approached the pool work staff with my reason for being there
they ask I not shoot the swimmers of
any age, especially the young children, as it makes any parents watching very
uneasy. I got it and left
realizing I wasn't thinking, thanked them and sheepishly left.

Not overexposed, just the look I worked for in Photoshop. Had to work against
the strong backlight. A 300mm lens on the 6x7 is just beyond 135 equivalency.
Can't do much spying with that.

Like much about this image. I've kept returning to it to recheck my reaction.
The overall light may suit your "summer heat" intent, but, for me the glare
of the sand background, surf board and surfer's thighs tend to detract from the
delicate
tones on the surfer.

Re: PESO Surfer Girl

2015-11-03 Thread Paul Stenquist
It’s a compromise of course. The shot is fully backlit with low winter sun. As
shot, the girl is in deep shadow. If I had exposed it to bring her up to a more
normal level, the background and surfboard would have been completely burned
out. So I shot it at a compromise exposure, and after scanning, adjusted the
levels to better the overall effect, then dodged her skin tones and burned in
the sand, surfboard and the bright parts of her body. To achieve something
better, fill flash and/or a reflector would have been required, although I
suspect some highly skilled photoshop practitioners could do a better job than
I have done, but I’m satisfied with this result. HDR would give it more
balance, but i think the result would look artificial.
