The post might have been friends only.

Here is what his son posted:
Nolan Leon Hinshaw, 1944-2023.
My dad passed away rather suddenly a couple of weeks ago. He was found in his
apartment last weekend. While we don’t officially know the cause of death yet,
he was being treated for heart problems. I take some comfort in knowing that he
reached the end of his life without ever needing a caregiver, and I’m sure he
would feel similarly. But it's a small comfort for a devastating loss.
I’m busy sorting through both things and feelings, and both are more wide
ranging than I could have imagined. He was many things: mechanic, engineer,
programmer, sysadmin, impromptu stand-in for a Gandalf cosplayer, The King of
Misrule, a sailor, a model maker,
that-guy-in-the-team-who-keeps-everything-working-somehow, and much more. But
mostly, he was my dad. He was the sort of parent who created possibility and
not limitation, and used hobbies and toys and activities to teach incredibly
valuable skills.
I’m sad to say that I don’t personally know a lot of his associates, especially
over the last 15 years or so. I’m planning to hold off on having any sort of
memorial until I can make sure I’m not missing anyone important. So... don't be
a stranger, and please do share your anecdotes and memories.

I think there are some old denizens of usenet on this list. I met Nolan on
alt.peeves, I know that he was also active on alt.folklore.urban
