Hi John,

You get to it from Windows Explorer:
Click View/Folder Options/View
Then find the Item "Hidden Files" and check "Show all files" on
Then uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Then click on the "Like current folder' button
That deals with it all, as far as I know.

That's the one I was trying to think of. I have to hunt it down every
time I install (or reinstall) Windows because I can never remember
where it "lives". :-) And it does affect the entire system, not just
Outlook.

I guess that means that there isn't a lot you can do
for people using Outlook Express. Or can you change
that option to allow the final extension to be
displayed? It's been so long since I last fooled
around with Outlook I don't remember. I always enable
extension display in Windows no matter what version I
am using.

I have downloaded an update for my Outlook98 which will block all dangerous
attachments. The virus we got was blocked because of this, even if I want to
open it I might not be able to do it.

Not showing the last extension is a setting in Windows, so a virus can hide
life stages.txt.shs or something like that. The innocent user thinks he
opens a text file which can't contain a virus.
This setting can be changed in the registry, be careful when editing and
make a backup first.
The following text is from www.nai.com about this subject:
One significance of this exploitation of SHS files is that it raises
awareness to the fact that the extension is not shown, even if a system is
configured to "show all files" and "show extensions of known file types".

This is due to a registry entry for Shell Scrap file types:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap
"NeverShowExt"="0"

Users can correct this by either deleting the entry named "NeverShowExt" or
rename it to "AlwaysShowExt". If renaming the entry, user must log off and
log back into Windows for the change to take effect.

I hope this is of help,

Frits

Hi, about attachments, you can tell these are aimed at
the microsoft world. You can visually examine the
extension on the file and tell what it is, maybe.
In the microsoft world the last three characters in
the file name tell the OS how to handle the file. So
be carefull of any file with a name ending in,

 .com //Program executable
 .exe //Program executable
.pif //Program information File (will act
 as an executable under certain
 circumstances.

.bas //Binary or Text Basic file
.vba //Binary of Text Macro file for
 Microsoft office (or any other
 Microsoft product that uses
macros).
 .ba[x] //Macro file specific to a package.

 .dot //Microsoft Word document template
(really just one huge macro for MS
 Word)

.doc //Microsoft word document can contain
 macros including MS Word Macro
 Viruses)

I played with Outleak Express once or twice and it does - by default -
*not* show the true extension of a file. If I send you a message
with `foo.jpg' as attachment, OE will display it with an icon
appropriate for images and the name `foo' (without extension).

This particular message contains a file named `TIAZINHA.JPG.pif'.
The displayed name will have the `.pif' stripped and have a
different icon.

OT: A stupid way to scare the bejeezus out of OE users is tacking
the following lines on your message (I put it in a box to disarm it):

/-\
begin present.txt.vbs
Hi, I'm a signature virus. Copy me!
end
\-/

Fortunately, this one is pretty harmless.

The setting isn't specific to Outlook (or Goatlook as my buddy calls
it). It's a "Windows wide" setting. I forget exactly where you
configure it, but it's called something like "Hide Extensions for 'Well
Known' File Types" (yes or no). I always set it to show all extensions.
I was born paranoid, and it's only gotten worse as I've experienced
more of the world. :-)
