I think this technique is obsolete now. There are
ways to clear the lens without needing to damage
anything in the moderen world. ( Trick involves
using a UV lamp - email for details if you really need to know).

As a repairman myself I am deeply wounded.
I have NEVER, and would NEVER suggest, such a thing!
NOTHING over a 4lb maul should ever be used in this
delicate procedure.
Any larger tool and the pieces are much too hard to
find!

I've done the same procedure using some aluminum foil, a north-facing
window, and about 2 months worth of sunshine. Worked nicely on two
Takumar 50/1.4's.

That made me sad.  I hope no one does that to me when I'm old  yellowing.
BTW, I once heard (perhaps from someone here) that sticking a yellowed lens 
under ultraviolet lights for a month or so would help reverse the yellowing. 
Any truth to that?
