RE: Sigma 100~300 f/4 DG APO lens

2008-04-28 Thread Rob Brigham
I have had one for a good few years. Used it a lot on the MZ-S back in the
film days. My lack of time to follow the hobby these days and also the type of
photography I have done for the last couple of years mean it hasn't even been
tried on the K10D or K20D yet, and maybe not event on the *istD...

Must get it out again.

Anyway, I found it a fantastic lens, and AF was good on the MZ-S - as I found
at the Duxford PDML meet. Very sharp but very heavy. Although I found it not
significantly heavier than their (also superb) 70-200 F2.8 and the range was
better for me at the time.

There are a fair number of reviews here:

http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-zoom/sigma/PRD_85165_3128crx.aspx

I don't believe they have built an HSM version for Pentax yet, so bear that in
mind.

The DA* 300?

Very good. Solid as a rock.
I like it a lot. To the point where I concider selling my other long lenses.
Optically it beats the shit out of the Tamron adaptall 300/2,8 and the
K-500/4,5. It is good fully open, and very good at f:5,6. I've used it with the
Pentax 1,7x AF TC. That combo definately needs a bit stepping down. But at f:10
it only needs a minor contrast boost in PP to deliver. I'm really waiting for
the new TC to come.

The only point that I'm not confident in is the AF. Far to easy to easy to
distract. And it tends to go in the wrong direction. But this could be me, or
the body, or both (me and my body) I'm not used to AF and long glass, so I
don't know what to expect.

All this said. I've read a lot positive about the Sigma 100-300/4. Mostly from
Canikon birders in Norway. I've seen very good pictures from it. Seems to
perform very well with the matched TC. There is also a guy at pentaxforums who
has both the Sigma and the DA* 300. According to him they are on par with each
other. I find that hard to beleave. There is conflicting inforamtion about HSM
on this lens.

But it seems tha DA* 60-250 really needs to deliver to compete.

I can definitely see your point Godfrey. When birding i.e. a twig can
distract AF a lot.
In these situations I usually sends some warm thoughts to Pentax for
the Quich Shift feature. The combination of AF and QS gives me the
best of both worlds. Still learning to use it though ...

2008-04-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
The 300/4 will be available any day now. In a medium to long zoom,
you'll soon have the DA* 60-250. Either lens should be superior to
the Sigma.
Personally, after owning a couple of their lenses and their flash I
won't buy anything Sigma makes. But that's just me.

When this lens first came out a few years ago, reviews indicated it was
weak at the long end. I suspect that Sigma reformulated the glass
because more recent users have seemed satisfied with it.

Look for a used (because it is discontinued) Tokina ATX-AF 400 f5.6. It
is a good, sharp lens for a moderate price. It is also lightweight. It
is a bit soft at f5.6, but quite good after that.

I have used it on both my MZ-S and Super Program and all functions work
as they should. The lens has a very wide focusing collar that
facilitates use as a manual focus lens. This collar slides (click
positions) slightly forward or back to engage and disengage the manual
focus and when disengaged it allows the lens to auto focus without
rotating the collar. I like this feature but some on the list disagree
...the feel in manual focus is like a manual focus lens.

I have four of the EX series Sigma lenses and rate them all very highly.
I might also mention that I had started acquiring these lenses before I
got my MZ-S and entered the world of auto focus. With the exception of
family snapshots, I still shoot all my photo's with gear mounted on a
tripod and focused manually.

Cheers, Mike.

Are you by chance using it with and MZM ? Or manual pentax ? Trying to make
sure that there will be no problems because of the lack of AF on the MZM.

Christien.

I assume you are referring to the Sigma EX series with the constant f4
aperture. This is an excellent lens, I have one and am very pleased
with it; it has also received very good reviews in several photo mag's,
including Pop Photo.

It is a substantial piece of glass if you are used to consumer grade
lenses in this focal length with variable apertures. However, if you
can handle the price and the weight, this is a high quality lens both
optically and mechanically, and one of the very few with this focal
length in a pro grade lens.

Cheers, Mike.

I don't know about the Sigma, but if you don't mind manual focus, you can
check out the SMC PENTAX-A 70-210/4 which is pretty good, but available
2ndhand only.

Sigma 100-300 F/4

2001-12-04 Thread Christien Bunting

Hi all.

This is my first post here.

I'm very much interested in getting the Sigma 100-300 f/4 or a lens of this
type. As for now I have a Pentax MZM. The MZM does wonders for a little guy.

Has anyone had experience with Sigma Lens on the MZ-M. Especially the new AF
lens of constant aperture.

Hopefully later on I'll move up to the upcomming MZ-6 or even the MZ-S.
