I get emails from teachers now and then about the snowflakes, so I know that some of them are looking at those photos. I think there's a real fascination with seeing something close up that is usually only seen from afar. FWIW - the last of the 2003 snowflake images has a couple links on the page, one to a site coving Wilson Bentley. That site has a reprint of an article he wrote for Popular Mechanics on how to photograph snowflakes - it's still an excellent source of information. - MCC - - - - - - - - - - Mark Cassino Kalamazoo, MI [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - - - - - Photos: http://www.markcassino.com - - - - - - - - - -
Re: Snow Crystal Photographs
Thanks, Ken, glad you like them! I wound up going with the extension setup after trying a variety of stacked lens setups (e.g. A*200mm macro with an M50mm f1.7 reverse mounted in front.) The reserve mounted 50mm on extension seems to be sharper than any of the stacked lens setups. The biggest problem is focusing - the 50mm f4 on 300mm of extension has an effective aperture of f28 - so the finder is pretty dim, even with lots of lights. - MCC At 06:06 PM 2/3/2003 -0500, Kenneth Waller wrote: Great job Mark! He's hand-raised, you know--I brought him home at age 5 days with exactly nine hours warning, and have raised him by myself since then. It's to his credit, therefore, that he's turned out to be such a super guy. I must admit I have thought of Bob B.'s son many times over the past few days. Being a parent myself. I thought about putting a large bumper sticker on my car that would say: "OPPOSE THE WAR / SUPPORT THE TROOPS." It does seem contradictory, and yet, I would hope there is a way to oppose political policy while still supporting our countrymen and countrywomen who are on the front lines. They certainly have my respect and support. I would wish nothing less for my own son if he were there. --Mike

Hi, Mike and Mark, I have a friend who's a children's librarian at the Toronto Public Library. If such a book exists, my guess is that she'll know of it. I've sent her an e-mail, and I'll let you (and the list) know if she's familiar with it. regards, frank Mike Johnston wrote: > Mark Cassino, > Are you aware that there's a children's book out now about an early pioneer > of snowflake photography? Thanks, Paul - glad you like them! The snowflakes are caught on glass, a blue light and diffuser provide the background. The biggest challenge is trying to focus, especially the 50mm f4 on ~300mm of extension! - MCC At 09:06 PM 2/2/2003 +, you wrote: Wow! Awesome work, Mark. Did you shoot it on glass? Amazing. Once upon a time, fellows of Penta Club discussed how one could grow snow flakes in controlled environment. I suppose for me in Israel it would be even more relevant... Truly amazing work. Snow Crystal Photographs
Hi folks - Last month's cold snap brought some really nice snow to west Michigan, and the opportunity for more snow crystal photography. I just updated my website with 30 new snow crystal photographs. These were shot with an Mz-S, AF360 flash, various extension tubes, bellows, and either a reverse mounted SMC-M 50 f1.7 or SMC-M 50 f4 Macro. All shots were at 4 - 8 x lifesized.
