Have not used the other brands - from what I've seen, the Pentax 200mm
macros are among the best there are, if not the best.

I used the Pz-1p for some time before getting the Mz-S, and I still use a
Pz-1p for birds. The flash capabilities are excellent - you have a fast
maximum X-Synch speed (1/250th) and flash compensation built into the body.

It depends on the situation. For hand held macro shots flash is the main
source of light, with the tripod I either don;t use flash or use it only as
fill.

Thanks Mike, and Frank, for that info re "Snowflake Bentley." I get emails
from teachers now and
then about the snowflakes, so I know that some of them are looking at those
photos. I think there's a real fascination with seeing something close up
that is usually only seen from afar.

FWIW - the last of the 2003 snowflake images has a couple links on the
page, one to a site coving Wilson Bentley. That site has a reprint of an
article he wrote for Popular Mechanics on how to photograph snowflakes -
it's still an excellent source of information.

Thanks, Ken, glad you like them!

I wound up going with the extension setup after trying a variety of stacked
lens setups (e.g. A*200mm macro with an M50mm f1.7 reverse mounted in
front.) The reserve mounted 50mm on extension seems to be sharper than any
of the stacked lens setups.

The biggest problem is focusing - the 50mm f4 on 300mm of extension has an
effective aperture of f28 - so the finder is pretty dim, even with lots of
lights.

Thanks Frank. He's hand-raised, you know--I brought him home at age 5 days
with exactly nine hours warning, and have raised him by myself since then.
It's to his credit, therefore, that he's turned out to be such a super guy.

I must admit I have thought of Bob B.'s son many times over the past few
days. Being a parent myself. I thought about putting a large bumper sticker
on my car that would say: "OPPOSE THE WAR / SUPPORT THE TROOPS." It does
seem contradictory, and yet, I would hope there is a way to oppose political
policy while still supporting our countrymen and countrywomen who are on the
front lines. They certainly have my respect and support. I would wish
nothing less for my own son if he were there.

Thanks, Paul - glad you like them! The snowflakes are caught on glass, a
blue light and diffuser provide the background. The biggest challenge is
trying to focus, especially the 50mm f4 on ~300mm of extension!

Amazing.
