Nielsen Bainbridge sells 8-ply museum matts in precut sizes. It's a  
nice thick matt with backboard in the standard cuts (like 11x14 in  
16x20, etc). Unless you have a good matt cutter and can deal with  
cutting your own from full board stock, it runs less money to buy pre- 
cuts.

I have been standardizing on them for a bit. The local University Art  
shop generally has them at 40% off, or about $14 apiece.

This is something that has always confused me.  Does 8-ply just mean 
thick or are there actually 8-lines within the cut that are visible?

Thick Mats (US)

Anybody have an online/phone source for those nice thick mats?   I don't 
know what they're called and my local shop doesn't carry them, but they're 
thick enough to make about a 1/8 bevel when cut- almost like mini 
gatorboard.   Restoration Hardware uses the same material in their frames, 
but they've gone and changed my favorite frame (for the worse, of course)- 
but I'm hooked on the thick mats.

Crescent Select is a thick board. Any online supplier shoild have it.
