One finally arrived and I did a quick evaluation in the shop, shooting
from their balcony (overviewing a big park, convenient for lens

So far, it's interesting. The 50mm performance is quite good, even
wide open. The 18mm performance is worse with vignetting and coma. At
f/4, it's overall good. I got some mixed feelings about it, so I will
do a more comprehensive post in few days.

Just remember that sample variation might exist.

I carry my *istD with me almost everywhere. SWMBO says I may not take it
in the bedroom ;)

The lens I have on it for when I am just gadding about or looking for the
un-expected is a Sigma 28-300mm which allows me to be prepared for anything
that pops up in a hurry and I need to shoot quick.

Kind regards

Dave, that is a hard one. If I know I'll be shooting in cramped
circumstances, or where a wider AOV is needed, I'll fit the 18-35
zoom, otherwise the 28-105 or 70-210 are nearly always on . I'll of course
change to another lens if it is more appropriate, but the 28-105 covers such
a useful range for speculative wandering!

My standard lens on the D is the Tamron Di 28-75/2.8.
Then, in decreasing order:

M 20/4
FA 35/2 (in low light this is my first lens of choice)
K 135/2.5
Sigma EX 70-200/2.8

FA20-35 so far but that was after a disappointing start with the DA16-45.
My DA16-45 had an overexposure problem just recently diagnosed by Bruce
Dayton as the aperture not closing properly. Thanks Bruce.

The DA16-45 should be a favorite. I like the FA20-35 very much and the
DA16-45 is a little wider and a little longer. The DA18-55 should be a very
good choice.

In conjunction with the FA20-35 I use a F35-70. The F35-70 is suprisingly
good, very cheap and has good close focus. A $400 lens and a $40 lens.

Well, I don't ~yet~ own a *ist D or a *ist DS, but (this being
Thanksgiving time here in the US and all), I would just like to say
that I am very grateful that I will ~eventually~ be able to answer
your question with the name of a lens that I already have - .

Remember, it was not all that long ago that, here on the PDML, there
was one discussion after another bemoaning the fact that (at that
time) Pentax seemed as if it were ~never~ going to come out with any
sort of a K-mount DSLR.

So, I am ~very~ thankful that, sooner or later, I will be able to
say that "I use my old "SMC A [...]" on my *ist D[S] more often than
not" - .

Of course! The DA 16-45 f4. This is a superb lens, and certainly one of
a handful of Pentax's best zooms ever. If you use zooms and can afford
it, get it. The DA 18-55 will not be as good: Note the difference in
price, and be guided thereby.

Most used prime? It's a toss-up between the FA 31 and the FA 77.

2. FA 50/1.7 (for quality)

In order:
1.) SMCP-A 50/1.4 and Tamron AF 28-75/2.8
2.) DA 16-45/4

The first two account for about 90% of the time split equally between them.
The 50/1.4 with F 1.7x AF Converter is my portrait lens of choice.

The 16-45 will see more use this winter and next spring for scenics, IF
the results are good. So far I find it a very "harsh" lens for scenics but it
hasn't really had a fair test.
If it doesn't work well the Vivitar 19/3.8 and K 28/3.5 will win out for
scenics.

I bought the FAJ 18-35 with it as a kit becuase it was

The other lens I will use on the istD is the FA24-90
