i agree, if you are committed to keeping up with digital photography, you also
need to keep up with software; the balance can vary, though — i've put a lot
more into the computer than the camera, because i see an efficient workflow as
a path to developing my shooting skills (it lubricates the process of reviewing
my own work), whereas i still get pretty good images from my five year old
camera and 20-30 year old lenses; the computer also helps with a lot of other
things i do, so i guess i get more incremental usefulness for my money from the
computer

there are other paths that are valid — working with older computers can be very
inexpensive, and it imposes a bit of discipline, i suppose

as for why LR4 for me, it's because it promises better exposure tools than
Aperture, and it will make a good test of workflow possibilities compared to
Aperture; i've barely started with it (LR4.1RC), but so far i'm not thrilled
with the interface, for example it lacks a tabular list view (looks like i'll
have to buy a plug-in for that) and it can't even show its preferences window
without disabling full screen on 2nd display

For me, it'll require that I upgrade my computer to Windows 7. Which
also means a new computer, since my current computers aren't capable
of running x64. It's an expensive upgrade for mapping, blurb and

Re: Why LR 4?

2012-04-01 Thread Stan Halpin
Disclaimer: my comments are based on the first beta release of LR4.

I was excited by the inclusion of not only a good linkage to a book publisher,
but as a bonus it links to Blurb with which I have been quite pleased. The
obvious advantages of having such a linkage built into LR itself are twofold.
First, it obviates the tedious step of exporting files which then need to be
"imported" into Blurb's BookSmart software. Second, on a related note, it
leaves the file re-sizing/optimization job to be done within LR which
presumably is at least as good as the BookSmart software.
For me, the big DISadvantages of the Book module in LR4 [as presented in the
beta version] are also twofold. First, it is neigh on to impossible to make
quick edits to one of the included page templates. Changes are accomplished in
the Print module, with the result exported as a JPEG, which is then re-imported
into LR4. The whole process is quite bizarre in my opinion; however, if you are
comfortable with the provided templates, then this is not an issue. The second
disadvantage/limitation is that the LR4 version of an interface to Blurb
restricts you to the "higher quality" paper which a) is heavier; b) more
expensive; c) not any more attractive IMHO; and d) limits the number of pages
you can include in your book.

Again, my comments may be OBE. After playing quite a bit with the first release
I have not looked at any subsequent releases including the 4.0 or 4.1
commercial releases. But I have tracked comments on the official discussion
site and haven't seen anything to indicate that my concerns (shared by many
others) have been addressed.

So my bottom line is that I would not upgrade to LR4 in order to use the Book
module. There probably are other good, even compelling, reasons to upgrade, but
Book ain't it. BookSmart does a decent job and Blurb has been proactive in
making improvements; Adobe hasn't come close to matching the functionality of
BookSmart, so far.

Hard to tell. People are compelled by different things. :-)

There are several 'nice to haves' but the new feature that really
does it for me is the MAP module, that integrates GPS (geo tagging)
very nicely into Lightroom, using a Google-maps driven map.

Since I have been using the O-GPS1 device on the K5 since it came out
last year, that is quite useful for me ...

Furthermore the '2012' process seems a bit easier to work with,
less sliders, less confusion and very good control over
hightlights and shadows.

And the upgrade is reasonably priced IMHO ...

It's a new process (PV2012). It's hard to tell if it's compelling or
not unless you try it. I find it to do way better than PV2010 in
scenes with extreme dynamic range, holding detail in clouds, pulling
up shadows without artifacts, etc. You get a 30-day free trial, so why
not see how if does on your challenging pictures?
