good to know -- I though I had read someone with win 7 (or at least not
win 10) had problems ..

I'm mainly concerned with it messing with my format

Thunderbird updates have been fairly well behaved for me. I do
plain-text email only and none of the updates have ever tried to
change my settings.

I've had compatibility issues a few times with Firefox updates, but
never with Thunderbird.

I'm still running the original Freecell on Windows 10. All it needs is
cards.dll driver and I have copied this on each time I got a new PC.

There used to be a XP compatibility mode that was meant for just that
problem.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/255507/run_xp_software_in_windows_7.html

I had a laptop that originally came with "Vista" and I hated the
versions of the games that came with it (Spider, FreeCell, Solitaire
...) so I just copied the XP versions and added them to the
Windows/System folder.

They worked fine. And they still work fine on 64-bit Windows 7.

They worked so well that just now is the first time I ever looked to
see if Windows 7 included games of its own.

If Micro$oft doesn't have a clue, I bet there's other fans of that
particular game who had the same problem and somewhere out on the
interwebbys there's instructions on how to get them to work under
Windows 7.

It was Windoze10 that wouldn't work. Attempting to install & use it was a

It was me, initially..
but I got a lot of support for not worrying about it.. that is, I will
continue with win 7 pro.  If things get dicey, I wouldn't do an upgrade
to my current desktop, I'd get another computer with Win 10 installed
.   Hopefully, I can avoid it for a long time..

I'm only connected through cable to the internet, have no smart phone
and no wifi, email set to plain text, etc..

Thunderbird wants me to up grade for 'better speed and privacy" but I'm

You may consider giving a try first to Wine (and Wine-tricks)
before/instead of VM solution.
Or, try both before deciding. You can then compare their performance
with each other.

WINE[0] allowa you to run well-behaved[1] Window$ applications without a shred
