eBay fun

2001-03-18 Thread Chris Brogden

Okay, people, count the mistakes, inaccuracies, and misleading bits in
this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1223185089

I counted at least seven big ones (not including spelling or grammar
errors, as these are understandable if English isn't their first
language... except for "Ashai," which is spelled correctly on the lens
*L*). This includes two innacurate statements in one 16-word
sentence. :) Have fun!

Speaking of eBay fun, anyone been able to input a new item this evening? I'm trying
to list an HP Photo cartridge and I CANNOT get past this damned screen wanting me to
download eBay's picture hosting service. Even though I check no thank I do not want
to install this software, the damned message keeps popping up, even though I have
checked the box stating I do not use pictureshow does one get around this bull
and on to the seller's pages??

This is becoming most annoying...

Hmmm, what exactly does "mint" mean again? I think
someone needs a dictionary, perchance. Still ROTF.

Not quite true. Proof coins generally are struck from special dies, at higher
pressure, and with multiple strikes, to make a coin with better detail and more
luster. The rest of your description of coin grades is, AFAIK, accurate.

Re: eBay fun

2001-03-20 Thread Bob Blakely

I was relating the information provided by the Philadelphia Mint in educational program
describing the coining process by following it through the mint. After the coin is
designed and created in plaster? about the size of a large, round dinner platter, it's
taken to an ancient machine made in the late 1700's where it slowly spins with a large,
vertically oriented platter. A follower pin like device follows the contours of the
design
like playing a vinyl record and the machine mechanically cuts a replica at the proper
size. This replica is used to make an inverse relief of the coin which is then used to
make 10 or so proper reliefs which are each then used in turn to make a number of dies.
When a die is first mounted to the stamping machine, a very short run is made (the
stamping is incredibly fast, the pressure is very high and varies with the size of the
coin. The Sakajowea(sp) dollar requires 50,000 lbs to stamp). The coins from the short
run
are examined for their degree of perfection. If bad, the die is tossed and a new die is
installed and another test made. These are the first coins produced from a die and are
of
the highest quality that the particular die set will produce. They are exceedingly
rare in
comparison with the total number of coins stamped. These are the proof coins because
they
prove that the die set is stamping correctly and is likely to produce many coins.
Quality
is downhill from there for that die set because they wear. From then on, the coins are
sampled to monitor the condition of the dies and when the coins degrade to much,
another
die set is installed and more proof coins are produced.

Double striking, etc. is a whole 'nother category. These coins are produced solely for
collectors. Of course, proofs are made of these as well before the (usually very
limited)
run is made, so proofs of these are made available at an even higher price.

Regards,
Bob...

William,

I suppose if I said "You dog!" you would only take that as a
compliment. (vbg) Keep in mind that I slightly lean towards dogs as
they actually are pets whereas cats are more like friends.

I am trying to decide between the leaf shutter
and the regular one right now. How clumsy is the leaf shutter when
used for fill flash and is there any operational difference between it
and the 2.8 when not using the leaf shutter?

Congrats on the purchase!

I just got back from an afternoon of protection training.
Let me tell you, your worldview sure changes when there is a 90
pound German Shepherd attached firmly (really firmly) to your
arm.

With friends like cats, you really don't want a lot of enemies.

I already have the 90mm LS, I expect the 165 will be the same.
It is not too clumsy in operation. Firstly, the lens will work
just like a normal lens until you invoke the lens shutter.
When using the lens shutter, there is a pretty specific routine
to go through.
First, for mechanical timing reasons, the camera shutter must be
set to 1/8 second. This is very important, for failure to do
this will make you think your lens is not very reliable.
After that, it is just a matter of setting the shutter speed on
the lens, and cocking the lens shutter, in addition to cocking
the camera shutter. I am told the lens shutter speed should not
be adjusted after the shutter is cocked, but I don't know how
important this is.
If you are using a flash in conjunction with the lens shutter,
the flash is plugged into the PC socket on the lens, and the
camera is then used normally.
When you trip the shutter, the lens shutter is actuated by the
aperture stimulator, and as the lens stops down, the lens
shutter closes. Then the body shutter opens, the lens shutter
cycles, the camera shutter closes and the mirror comes back
down, ready to go again.
It is certainly not as quick to use as a camera with lens
shutters designed in, but it certainly works well enough.
I was really trying to decide between the 165mm f/2.8 and the
165LS. I think the stop less DOF would be nice, but the lens
shutter is probably going to be more useful.

Same here. That just makes my skin crawl. I deliberately ignore

I just take it as an indicator that the seller is probably
quite a bit younger than I am.
