gladness and disappointment
Hi! I just shot an SMC Pentax-F Zoom 70-210 mm from ebay. I was surprised and glad that it arrived yesterday. Just in time for Whitsuntide - time to try it out. But the disappointment followed when I unwrapped it: it had fine hairs of fungus on an inner lens, wonderful enlarged by the front lens. Don't know how to open such a zoom. The lens was described on ebay as to be optically and mechanically very good. So I mailed to the seller and he will take it back. Have to wait for the next one ... (sigh) Question: Would there have been a real chance to clean the fungus out or is it possible that he leaves traces on the lens surface? And what's about losing the adjustment in such an intervention? Best regards Bernd - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: gladness and disappointment
Hi Bernd, If the fungus has not (yet) managed to eat itself into the glass, it can be cleaned completely. However, zooms are very difficult to disassemble and to assemble, so it is a wise decision to give the lens back. Cheers, Boz - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Ebay is full of folks unloading stuff they actually know little about. Description was totally bogus - because they may have not known better is no excuse, IMHO. Fungus is very persistent and there is the chance of it spreading to other gear - send it back! Oregon -( no fan of Ebay )- Bill - Bill D. I'm pretty handy with this stuff but it was a *lot* of work. I'd hate to think what the labor charges would be to pay to have it done. Fungus is bad news anyway.
