Hi Herb.
Then i must be doing something wrong.I open up in the nikon browser and if i pick a
picture to edit,it
gives me a Dialog box for which edit program i want to use.
I choose PS 6 and it opens.
>From the trial version of Capture 4 i could adjust WB contrasts etc.I cannot in PS.

Am i looking in the wrong program.??

No, you are looking in the wrong forum :)

However, to shed some light on it, I will try:

Nikon View is a free software with the camera. It offers an image
browser (thumbnails and simple batch operations), image viewer and a
simple editor, all of which works on jpeg, tif and nef (raw) files. In
the editor, you can change white balance and exposure, sharpening and colour
balance,... , but only in a limited scope (e.g. no eye dropper tool, no
WB in Kelvins, only as "cloudy" and similar).

Nikon Capture is a pro, $ version, offering remote control of the
camera from computer, advanced image editor with many tools for
converting raw files and such. There is a trial (30 day) version of
it.

Both programs do a good job on converting raw files, and both offer
conversion into 16 bit TIFF, if I am not mistaken. However, the
Capture is much more refined in its options like denoise, sharpening,
white balance, reduce moire, etc... as well as remote control, which
is indispensable for the studio.

Now, was that answer to the original question :) ?

Who would like a Nikon forum :-) I am a nikon user myself, though coming
from Pentax (and still using it time to time), and I feel much more
"home" here.

Glad to answer your question. BTW, for raw editing, I am much looking
at CaptureOne DSLR program from PhaseOne. It has some very neat
"workflow" features, unlike the NikonCapture. Any other questions
on this please on my personal email :)

2004-05-12 Thread Herb Chong
since you are able to open the file in PS, you are getting the file import
plugin to work. that's important since otherwise i would say that your
installation was broken. you can permanently add PS 6 to the dialog as one
of the programs to open NEF files with. you can change the association for
NEF to PS 6. you get white balance and exposure compensation setting changes
only. you can also export as a JPG and edit the file that way with no
setting changes possible. as far as i am concerned, those are the only
setting changes you want to do in the Nikon program anyway. the only
important feature that Capture has that bare Photoshop 6 doesn't have at
least a good a tool for is nosie reduction and that is because there isn't
camera-specific knowledge in Photoshop for the digital noise in the camera.
there are very few other functions i can think of in Capture that isn't done
better in Photoshop, even Photoshop 6. like i said, i have a registered
version of Capture and it was necessary for a while but now that i have
Photoshop CS, it's not.
