Re: istDS and istD shutter release sound?
A few days ago I was in my favorite tea house in which there's a small, horseshoe-shaped counter around which a few people, including myself, were sitting. I fired off a few shots with the DS and no one around the counter seemed to hear or take notice. It was surprising how unobtrusive the little DS can be. Throw one of those little lenses on it, and it may go unnoticed in some situations as well as being unheard. Others on the list compared the photos I presented of the DS mirror box and the D mirror box. There is a structural difference and, playing with the two cameras in the shop, they have a different timbre to the noise they make. I sometimes think the DS makes a loud and clattery sound, but then I snap six or seven exposures in a quiet room and find that no one noticed. At other times, such as when shooting from the hip or from a tripod, I don't notice it myself. The other day I was at the camera shop and looked at a Nikon FM, my camera of 20 years, and was somewhat amazed at how noisy it was compared to the DS. Compared to the Sony R1, of course, it sounds like a drumstick hitting a snare drum ... the Sony is next best thing to totally silent (once you turn off the "simulated shutter" sound and all the beeps and boops). I find it interesting how perceptions shift with the context of use. Godfrey On Mar 30, 2006, at 8:54 AM, John Bailey wrote: Rick and Lucas, Thanks for the replies. Compared to my PZ-1, PZ-1p, and (especially) Super Programs, the istD shutter noise is a whisper. I have shot chamber music recitals with the PZ-1p without disturbing anyone, so comparing the istD and istDS noise is rather like comparing the noise of a fly fart and a flea sneeze.
