Re: PESO: Me and My Shadow

2021-06-19 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Alan!

This was one or a dozen that I released over the past three days, so I
don't remember exactly how long it took her ( it is a female) to fly away.
Two flew away immediately, as soon as I opened the door to the cage. Most
waited until I reached in and removed them by hand, and tried to place them
on a nectar flower. This one flew off the flower and spent some time on
the ground. I wanted her out of the sun, so after taking this image, I
moved her to an echinacea flower in the shade, and turned to other
released butterflies.

Generally, newly emerged butterflies need at least an hour or two to dry
off their wings before they are strong enough to fly. They generally hang
on to the side of the cage, or the plant on which the chrysalis hung,
gently opening and closing their wings until they are dry and strong enough
for flight. A few take a lot longer. I released one onto an
echinacea Wednesday evening, and it was still hanging on to the same flower
Thursday morning.

This lens is an FA 100 mm F 2.8. The other macro I use frequently is a DA
35 mm F 2.8 Macro Limited.

Note for Larry or anyone else who needs to do lighting in a confined

matching 40 degree strip grid. It is totally worth the moola. Colour
me _very_ impressed with them. I just bought two, and I've been
testing a variety of tricky lighting patterns in my confined office
space (converted bedroom). The light output is soft but narrow (16 x
 30) and so well directed coming out of the box you'll think it was
collimated like a laser beam. I have been able to locate these boxes
directly behind an object to light its background leaving the object
completely in silhouette. All you need is some black foamcore sheets
to eliminate stray reflections and you can do chiaroscuro like a
champ. They are perfect for hair lights or split lighting.

Because they have two sets of zippers to allow lightstand access to
the interior -- for vert or horiz orientation -- you can also use the
spare zippered opening to get at the controls of the flash and
trigger. That's harder to do with the other Apollo models with their
 single set of zippers.

I bought 'em from BH Photo and they arrived by UPS in a few days (and
cheaper than I could get 'em locally in Toronto!).

K-3, DA* 16-50/2.8 @ 45mm/f:6.3, 1/125th sec, ISO 200; on tripod, IR
remote.
Key light: AF540FGZ @ 1/64th power, with a Honl 1/8 Speed Grid, camera
right.

Background: two Neewer TT560 in Westcott Strip boxes, L R.
FleaBay radio triggers.
Lr, Ps, Nik Analog Efex.

Note for Larry or anyone else who needs to do lighting in a confined
space: seriously consider the Westcott Apollo Strip Box with its
matching 40 degree strip grid.

Thank you guys. The left Timis using a ME-super with a FA* 85. The 85
is very functional indeed, the ME is not.

Pauls guessing is near spot on. Except for the chair part. Didn't move
any chairs. Some og you might notice that right Tim les less beard
than left Tim (the devil is in the ...).

The PS job was pretty straight forward. Used three layers, and erased
the parts that I didn't need.

Anyway. This was fun. And I'm pretty plaesed with the result.
Except that I could have done a better job with the lighting. I was
working under a deadline for a informal competition in the photot

Interesting you should mention the depth of field. I wasn't happy with
the DOF in the original so I applied a bit of blur to the background.

Marnie - thanks for the suggestion about reducing contrast slightly.
I'll have a look at that but I like the late afternoon light in this so

I think that I don't recognize you on that shot and I happen to have met
you in person.

Seriously however, it is an interesting form (as in art form) but it
leaves me indifferent otherwise.

I really don't care for it, Sasha. It seems to be more a portrait of
the bokeh than a silhouette portrait of you.

The portrait of the young lady eating is a very fine image, however,
and more to my taste.

I agree with Dan. The same bokeh works fine in the photo of the woman
eating because their is a an element of clarity (the face) to center
the shot. JMHO, of course.

there was something about the way you said please.

There is something about the combination of the angles, silhouette,
and boke that makes for a pleasing shot. while the green provides the
sense of place i think it would be nice in red.

I'm sure that was one of those get it now or don't get it at all
shots, but I think two steps to either side would have moved the coach's
face out from behind that one kid's hand and greatly improved the image.

Nice picture Dave. I think this is the best of the series. It really
shows some scale to it.
The Mackinac bridge photo is good, but a bit busy from shooting inside
the truck cab.
I can't believe Wisconsin restricts travel to nighttime only. That's a bummer.
Sorry you missed your K10D's return from Pentax.
You guys have me really worried about focusing errors.

Re: Peso Me with a tower

2008-03-03 Thread David J Brooks
Thanks Paul.

K10D is in for focus look see, so i shot the D200 this time.

Its equally as good as the K10D, but i just like the K10D a bit better.
For some reason, my action shots on the D200 seem soft, not as crisp
as the K10D, but the D200 does a good job on static objects.
