BTW, I am using pdns version :
pdns-2.9.21.1-1.el5.rf

Should I change to using version 3 recursor instead? I would prefer a 
stable version with minimum problems. 3 is still in beta, right?

I think you are mixing up two different products. The current release of 
the PowerDNS authoritative server is 2.9.22. The latest release of the 
PowerDNS recursor is 3.1.7.2 (version 3.2 is in development).
