Konvensi Buruh Maritim, 2006 (MLC, 2006) telah dirancang untuk menjadi instrumen hukum global yang akan menjadi pilar keempat dari peraturan Organisasi Maritim Internasional (IMO) yaitu konvensi SOLAS, STCW 1978, dan MARPOL 73/78. Tujuan dasar dari MLC, 2006 adalah: - Untuk menjamin perlindungan menyeluruh terhadap hak-hak pelaut diseluruh dunia; - Untuk membangun tingkat penerapan untuk negara dan para pemilik kapal berkomitmen untuk menyediakan kondisi kerja dan kehidupan yang layak bagi pelaut, melindungi mereka dari persaingan tidak sehat terutama di kapal sub standar. Konvensi tersebut akan diberlakukan 12 bulan setelah tanggal ratifikasi terpenuhi oleh setidaknya 30 negara anggota dengan total dalam tonase kotor kapal dunia sebesar 33%.
