Hello, pest experts!
This beetle is unlike anything I have seen in the museum. We are in Northern
California. This beetle was upside down in a crevice of a wood plow from
Mexico. It is about a centimeter long.
Thank you for your help identifying it.

Hello all -
We have a number of insects this month that I can't identify. All the traps
are from our basement storage areas, where we did have flooding a few months
ago. Since then we've also had a significant increase in psocidsl, so I'm
worried too if these are related to a damp/mold issue that has persisted since
the flood clean up.

There is an unknown larvae, some what appear to be mites (?) that we found on
several traps, along with some winged insects that I can't ID. We have a fancy
new microscope so I also attached my favorite spider picture from this month's
IPM.

Many, many thanks!

Christina

It is 1cm long.

Any guesses? Turns out, a google search of “tiny black caterpillar that isn’t

Hi everyone,

I’m a sucker for FAIC’s “Connecting to Collections Care” website. Most of their
webinars are free, and there are a TON. Here’s the introductory IPM webinar:
https://www.connectingtocollections.org/ipmpart1/<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.connectingtocollections.org%2fipmpart1%2f&c=E,1,QoH_tS_BDMrW-Hbj8yuSJZayhCQ4owQh9O80aXw6BaCPVrOUkAuVG44BVSN8qagwAY-drpMMVBcq4Sviqug_TH3snfWBPq7qoEl2eJ-cJZuOnCk,&typo=1>

There’s a second part, and I think there are other webinars available for IPM
as well. You can search their resources page for whatever topic you want:
https://www.connectingtocollections.org/resources/<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.connectingtocollections.org%2fresources%2f&c=E,1,t26V0zFaY7mwl-kLSkJGYxT5w6kEMOvE4WAYwblBwGd_6SKTjLZwRS9UlaRMxYRR87Vb37C0YX0tzn3FjbUWX3N-_dHrO67YbgNbTQiHsK9KJCRgs94jrkmzvQ,,&typo=1>
(just select “webinar” in “Resource Type” and have at it).

Hope this helps!

We anticipate installing sweeps in the very near future and these have been
recommended. I’d be interested if anyone has insights or experience with them.

We have interior doors that appear to be hollow and filled with Styrofoam
beadboard. For a time we had mice getting into these and shredding the
Styrofoam, presumably to make nests. I’m glad to say that since we managed to
exclude mice from the building, this problem has gone away. No-pne wanted to
dismount the (large) doors to put metal plates on the bottom…..

Dan,

For hollow doors that are on the interior of a building that is under
temperature control, then there would seem little value to weep holes. In those
cases, the holes can be blocked. A small square of aluminum flashing, held in
place with an appropriate adhesive (I like silicone) works wonders. If you’re
able to get your fingers under the door easily, then the repair is simple.
Sometimes, the doors need to be removed from their hinges. That’s best left to
locksmiths or other door repair folks.

If the door is in an area that suffers from temperature and humidity
fluctuations (as with an exterior door), then consider a metal mesh. I’d select
something that is not oxidizing. Stainless steel hardware cloth works well.
Xcluder fabric will breath and allow water to pass, but it would be difficult
to secure it in place.

I recommend that all doors be inspected and modified prior to installation. It
is far more costly and difficult to mitigate after the doors have become mouse
condos.

In any case, be sure that any modifications do not compromise the fire rating
of the door. If in doubt, ask someone skilled in that arena.

Dan,

Those holes are sometimes weep holes, but other times they’re formed into the
door bottom to help with handling during manufacturing. Mice readily find these
portals to an attractive and comfortable abode.

Our museum is located right beside an active airport for small aircraft - and
they also have a problem with seagulls and geese - especially during

frequency they use lower frequency "booms" - might not be super practical for
central London - but the Aviation Industry might have some good leads on
deterring birds.

Hi folks

Since Covid, we are having serious problems with seagulls and pigeons settling
on the Great Court glass roof (see image of aerial view) and making a hell of a
mess. It has been suggested that the birds see it as a ‘lake’ and we have never
had success with things like shock systems or brining a hawk around the site

Our pest control company has recommended high frequency acoustic scarers

I don’t have any experience of them so have any of you used them and is it
worth the investment?

Many thanks

I walk through our storage areas and other areas with blunder traps once every
two weeks. If there is a specific concern I check traps weekly, or in the case
of an installation of potted plants (against my recommendation) I checked traps
daily. These were removed during hours the museum was open to the public- pre
Covid 19.

Heather,

You’re not alone. What I commonly hear from both pest management professionals
and their commercial clients is that convincing higher-ups to spend the money
or time on the necessary structural repairs, design modifications, and
environmental controls is one of the biggest challenges in managing pests, and
one of the most common reasons for continual pest problems.

Hello,

Our answer is based on the project we’ve made of our IPM. There had never been
any bug data collection/IPM prior to this. And we were flatly told there was no
bug problem…nice try.

Over the course of 2019, we (the preservation department) checked over 100
traps weekly for the sole purpose of data gathering. In 2020, we moved to
monthly as the solutions haven’t been applied yet. I want us to have solutions
in place and to have been shown as effective before we move to quarterly. But
quarterly is the goal.

I’m trying to use the data to convince the higher ups that we need better
environmental controls. In this time of budget constraints, that might not be
an option.

[PestList] Re: Risk of flower displays

2020-07-07 Thread Casey Mallinckrodt
Hello All.
This has been a fraught question at the Wadsworth Atheneum and focused on a
curatorial [request] to install live plants to compliment an exhibit. I agreed
with stipulations --the plants very carefully sourced and quarantined for a
month before installing, and insect-specific traps installed with the plants
and some removed during public hours. Nits and drain flies appeared immediately
then Covid closed the museum and I was no longer able to examine the plants
though was told they were removed.

A long standing flower committee is asked to comply with basic constraints: no
containers that could house insects, only florist specific cut plants and
foliage, daily monitoring, regular turn-over, and no flowers in gallery spaces.
Potted plants are not allowed. I have not observed any insects to date.

In addition to the information in this very helpful thread I'd like lo know how
museums with installations of plants manage this. The Wadsworth does not have a
horticulturalist or gardener on staff so conservation oversees.

I'm grateful to have missed the 1960's one-day installation of ducks in the
interior pool (now empty of water).

Hi Mike,

in addition to Tony and Richard, i would say the same. This depends of the
building and the objects of the exhibition and should be considered with a risk
management according to IPM.

For example: Domestic cut flowers during the wintertime, should have not
Anthrenus beetles on the flowers. So the risk is higher during spring or
summertime to get a problem.

I think you may find some written information for your statement in one of
different IPM-handbooks, MuseumPests.com or proceedings of IPM-conferences like
London, Vienna, Paris or Stockholm.

Hi All,

Currently we have a discussion within our team about cut flowers on display in,
and near our exhibition halls. There have been flowers there for a while and we
never had any problems, until a week ago. A bug crawled away from one of the
bouquets, but we could not catch it. The question is; what is the risk level of
pests on flower display. One side thinks the risk is negligible low, the other
side would like to replace the flowers with something non organic. I cannot
find any examples or studies to make a substantiated statement about either
side. Can somebody help?

I think one should consider the composition of the collection and exhibits. If
those items are composed of rocks and minerals, metal or stone sculptures,
computer terminals, or diverse other inorganic materials, then the risks to
those objects would be vanishingly tiny. So, enjoy the live or cut flowers.
But, if your displays are of paintings, fabrics, wood artifacts and other
organically-based materials, then forego the natural floral arrangements and
opt instead for displays of artificial or virtual flowers. You can even adorn
these with plastic or glass insects for a more complete and life-like
arrangement.

Mike,

This may or may not be helpful, but in our herbarium we do not allow living
material to be brought into the main collection as a measure to prevent any
potential pests from entering that way.

With thanks for any advice you can offer,
