Hi Dale,

Yes, ~5mm, black, ridged elytra, but I'm not sure what you mean about the head.
To me the head looks like a helmet that fits snuggly at the elytra.

I have learned since the original post that these beetles have been eating the
rodent bait out of traps.

Thanks,
Angela

Angela - Dale here from the O'Keeffe. They appear to be tiny - like 5mm long,
is that correct? All solid, one color? The elytra (outer wings) appear ridged
along the axis of the beetle and the pronoun or plate over the thorax is kind
of angular near the head?

Looks like black carpet beetle rather than black larder beetle. Dermestes ater
has a wider posterior curvature of the pronotum than either Attagenus brunneus

Hi,

I suspect Latridiidae, but I'd love a second opinion.

For those following the digital microscope conversation, these were taken with
a $250 Dino lite, which I've been happy with. The stand costs an additional
$40.

They both appear to be weevils (Curculionidae) - accidental visitors, and
not a threat to collections, excepting that they do provide food for other
pests.

Hello!

Happy Friday!

I was hoping someone could help me identify the beetles in these photos. They
are both about the size of a pencil eraser. Found them in two different blunder
traps in two different areas of our museum - one trap was placed inside a large
exhibit case and one was placed just inside an exterior door.

Thanks!
