Hi Pascal,

Without actually examining the item, it’s difficult to determine exactly what
the material is. From my view, the “droppings” might also be from Cockroaches
or Silverfish. Both of these insects will chew on paper and use the book as
harborage. The book is very old and the “paper” might actually be a source of
nutrition for some insects. The book might have been held in such a way as to
be exposed to the environment giving the insects access to the pages. Are the
“droppings” totally dry or can you wipe them off? Are they greasy? Do they
smear?

Hi,

has anyone seen such a damage on a book before?? The book is about 300 years
old and was transported from Yemen to Austria long time ago and is now in the
national library. I think it looks like fly droppings but I am happy for other
suggestions!! We have no idea why this book was so attractive for the flies.
The spots can be removed mechanically and have a small relief, bus some stains
remain.

Thank you very much,

Pascal

Hi,

The common name of this fly is Fungus Gnat. Typically this insect is
associated with potted plants that are over-watered. Over-watering potted
plants promotes fungal growth which the immature stage, maggot, feeds on.
Inspect the plant soil and look for the tiny maggots AND shake the plant and
see if you observe any adult gnats fly around. If the plant(s) are the
source, you can remove them or discard them if possible. Fungus gnats also
can be found in damp areas with decaying organic matter. An insecticidal
soap can be used to treat the potting soil and mitigate the maggot stages.
Additionally, you can install yellow colored sticky traps in the potted
plants to monitor for these gnats. Hope this helps.

Hello All

We keep getting this bug in our pest traps at the Museum. The traps are
located in a live insect area (but this is not one we have on display!)

Can any one help identify it?

Thanks for any help on this!

Hi,

The first sample is a Springtail. The second may be a species of Fungus
Beetle but I'm not certain. I'm sure someone will identify it. Hope this

I agree with Lou Sorkin.cockroach egg case. However, Larder Beetle larva
are known to burrow into soft wood and drywall to pupate.

Can anyone tell me if the attached image is castings of larder beetles?
They measure about 12 mm in length and were found in the crevice between a
painting on wood and its wood frame, with boring damage to the painting.
Thanks.

Hi,

The first photo dorsal / ventral view appears to be a species of an adult
“ground-living” beetle. Number 5 insect is a winged termite or Alate form.
It is a reproductive. No sure of the species. I would need more
information. A guess would be a “drywood” termite. Can’t really tell from
the photo. Did you just find a single sample or were many present? . The
other beetle and larva appear to be dermestidae. The next appears to be a
case-making clothes moth cocoon with larval caste skin. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I assume you are looking for someone to identify the specimens in the photos
you have posted. Here are my assessments. Perhaps others will also provide
theirs.

1. Clearly a spider; perhaps a species of sac-spider.

2. These appear to be winged Psocids.

3. This appears to be a webbing clothes moth based on the tuft of hair
on its head.

4. Some Dermestidae; perhaps black carpet beetle - museum beetles

I hope this helps
