I would also suggest you monitor the environment in the interior in any way you can. Ideally, you should monitor humidity and temperature in the cabinet, but even a simple indoor/outdoor electronic thermometer would be helpful. (The home variety, very inexpensive) Note that a heat rise of only a few degrees may be adequate to dry out the interior enough for this "treatment", so high temperatures are not needed. Depending on circumstances, a 100 watt bulb could be too powerful, so you may wish to start with a smaller wattage bulb and monitor the interior temperature. All that said, your insurance company and loss management folks would be happier if you purchased some inexpensive desiccant packs. Again, seal the cabinet as best you can. I would suggest using silica gel or hygroscopic clays, not the chemicals. If you go for a silica gel desiccant pack, note that this is not an application for Prosorb or other museum showcase buffering compounds. Oh yes, monitor if you can! js Jerry Shiner Keepsafe Microclimate Systems www.keepsafe.ca <http://www.keepsafe.ca/> i...@keepsafe.ca +1 800 683-4696 Providing a suite of services and environmental control solutions for museums and archives, including control of humidity, oxygen and temperature. -Original Message- From: ad...@museumpests.net [mailto:ad...@museumpests.net] On Behalf Of bugma...@aol.com Sent: January-24-13 8:16 AM To: pestlist@museumpests.net Subject: Re: [pestlist] Psocids This is a message from the Museumpests List. However, conservators would generally advise against raising the temperature in a contained environment and instead using something like desiccated silica gel to lower the RH. Given that most herbaria cabinets are well sealed that should also work to make the environment less hospitable. Rachael Perkins Arenstein A.M.
