i haven't yet tried a recent build here, but i DO remember seeing ftol
b4 ... though on PC-boxen.

doing a little quick digging, it seems ftol is related to runtime
Floating-Point-to-Int conversion; cref e.g. this thread --

http://lists.apple.com/archives/PerfOptimization-dev/2005/Jan/msg00027.html

reading the thread, i'm fairly certain ftol is NOT avail on PPC ... but
perhaps on Intel?

florian, what box are you building on?

has someone here, perhaps, been monkeying with Intel code for the new macs?

just guessing for now ...

i hear you; thx for your time/effort! :-)

_but_ ... just to be clear:

the point of my last post was that it worked w/o problem ... autoconf
did not break the bootstrap, or the build/execute.

at the moment, a fresh 'rinse-n-repeat' w/ r5036 + a (the?)
autoreconf-mod to bootstrap is exec'ing just fine.

true, not a hugely important issue ... but i do not-so-rhetorically
wonder alound -- if (and it's an unclear "if", i know) Darwinports has
introduced some complicating artifacts, what's to say that there aren't
others ...

which is why i've voted with my feet to avoid Darwinports.

NOT my intent to start any sort of flamewar ... just raising a point to
consider.

cheers,

richard

fwiw, starting w/ r5035

noting that you've removed AC_PROG_RANLIB from configure.ac.in, i don't
replace/add AC_PROG_LIBTOOL.

mod'ing "bootstrap":

remembering that, on my OSX:

continuing on, as before with:

agreed. imho, the script should NOT be made to depend on NON-standard
paths.

all my 'stuff' is generally installed in '/usr/local', which *is*
included in OSX's autosearch path to PRECEDE /usr/local.

obviously, darwinports installs elsewhere ... without explicit path

??? hrm.

1st,

on my sys,

% ls -al /usr/local/share/autoconf/Autom4te/FileUtils.pm
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6670 Oct 22 22:51 FileUtils.pm

are you sure your FileUtils.pm is *in* your perl @INC path?

also, did you 'roll your own' autotools & libtool, or install from rpm?
i've built mine from src, so know where everything goes on OSX ...
dunno abt rpm installs.

also, run "locate.updatedb" and look for libtoolize ... is it in your
exec $PATH?

on my box its:

% ls -al /usr/local/bin/*libtool*
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 217609 Feb 10 11:10 /usr/local/bin/glibtool
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 10775 Feb 10 11:10 /usr/local/bin/glibtoolize

NOTE: of course, on OSX, libtoolXXX is sed'd to glibtoolXXX, as ther is
an Apple-spec'd libtool which has other function.

if/when you find it, what's

% libtoolize --version

report?

hmmm ... cref:
http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/html_mono/automake.html

"People upgrading old packages to newer autotools are likely to face
this issue because older Automake versions used to call libtoolize.
Therefore old build scripts do not call libtoolize.

Since Automake 1.6, it has been decided that running libtoolize was none
of Automake's business. Instead, that functionality has been moved into
the autoreconf command (see Using autoreconf). If you do not want to
remember what to run and when, just learn the autoreconf command.
Hopefully, replacing existing bootstrap.sh or autogen.sh scripts by a
call to autoreconf should also free you from any similar incompatible
change in the future.

and since, on my system:

% automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.9.6

and on stock Tiger,

% /usr/bin/automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.6.3

also, just fyi, as for the use of 'traditional' bootstrap scripts, cref
@ http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html:

"Many packages come with a script called bootstrap.sh or autogen.sh,
that will just call aclocal, libtoolize, gettextize or autopoint,
autoconf, autoheader, and automake in the right order. Actually this is
precisely what autoreconf can do for you. If your package has such a
bootstrap.sh or autogen.sh script, consider using autoreconf. That
should simplify its logic a lot (less things to maintain, yum!), it's
even likely you will not need the script anymore, and more to the point
you will not call aclocal directly anymore."

de nada.

simply because you don't call it.

per my earlier post, my invocation is:

glibtoolize --force --copy

which will update the files you've provided in ./config/, namely:

config.guess config.sub depcomp install-sh ltmain.sh missing

to be up-to-date with my libtool installation's, which currently is:

% glibtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.22 (1.1220.2.365 2005/12/18 22:14:06)

whereas what Tiger/XCode2x ships, is a rather dated:

% /usr/bin/glibtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5 (1.1220 2003/04/05 19:32:58)

i presume (without admittedly checking) that you're building with
'stock' Tiger/XCode libs/tools ...

as libtool version issues have -- always annoyingly, often destructively
- -- cropped up for me MANY times, as a rule i always keep all my builds
in synch.

if the glibtoolization *breaks* something, it's usually a flag for me to
watch out for other issues ...

well, glibtoolize is being called cuz i'm calling it ... as i typically
do given that i've a rather up-to-date env. just cleaning house, as it
were.

as for why glibtoolize is 'calling' AC_PROG_LIBTOOL, that's to be found
in libtool.m4:

% grep AC_PROG_LIBTOOL /usr/local/lib/aclocal/libtool.m4
# serial 48 AC_PROG_LIBTOOL
# AC_PROG_LIBTOOL
AC_DEFUN([AC_PROG_LIBTOOL],

# _AC_PROG_LIBTOOL
AC_DEFUN([_AC_PROG_LIBTOOL],

])# _AC_PROG_LIBTOOL
# In the future, this macro may have to be called after AC_PROG_LIBTOOL.
AC_DEFUN([AM_PROG_LIBTOOL], [AC_PROG_LIBTOOL])

which, of course is invoked by glibtoolize ...

cheers,

hi dave,

it seems that one *can* copy selected text from a hints window . just *not*
with CMD-C, as
is 'standard' on OSX.

rather, one needs to use CONTROL-C. works just fine.

not sure if this is a 'bug' or a 'feature' of wxwidgets ...

hi dave,

it would seem that wx262 does, in fact, have some challenges w/ OSX's
install_names:

http://lists.wxwidgets.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?8:sss:86907:200601:ojcggikbjepjjjfmdnhf#b

which is why the samples/html/about/about.app was not launching ...

that said, in answer to your earlier question of whether the html samples run,
exec'ing the
equiv "./about" from the command line *does* launch correctly, as do any/all of
the other sample
apps i've tried.

now, of particular note, running the htmlctrl sample, selecting the text of the
sample app is
possible, but *again* it can't be copied ...

i'll file this as well @ wx ...

i've pgadmin3 150/dev + pgsql812 on OSX 10.4.4.

when i create/open a new connection, the hints window pops up with a notice
that:

"server lacks instrumentation functions"

now, per .../src/admin81/README.admin81, i've built/installed the admin tools.
no errors.

i've also:

psql -q -f admin81.sql postgres username

and reloaded the server.

am i missing something in the build?

thx,

[pgadmin-hackers] multiple site/db central backup with pitr using pgadmin3?

2005-11-15 Thread OpenMacNews
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: RIPEMD160

hi all.

just coming up to speed on the idea-basics, but thought i'd ask (*while* i rtfm
...) if "it" can
be done in/with pgadmin3.

i've numerous boxes with pgsql instances, and the usual assortment of DBs/box.

backing up, til now, has been script-driven, each box being backed up
separately ... but, now,
getting to be tedious/messy.

i'd like to back up to a central server, with version control.

from irc chat, sounds like the right way to do this is connect from local to
remote, pg_dump
remote db to local disk over network, and implement "point in time recovery"
(cref:
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/backup-online.html).

in principle, all doable via shell script ...

doable/automated via pgadmin3?

thoughts/comments?

thx!

richard

2005-06-10 Thread OpenMacNews

hi,

also ... what project decisions have been made (if any) as to

(a) included libs?

Whatever is appropriate/needed. I think that's port dependent.

ok.

at the very least on OSX, i'm wondering abt:

   /usr/local/lib/libpng.dylib
   /usr/local/lib/libjpeg.dylib
   /usr/local/lib/libtiff.dylib

whick, afaik, are NOT bundled on/with OSX (unless they're hiding in some
framework ...)

tho, i dunno how 'necessary' they are for pgadmin3 (it's been awhile ... iirc,
i put them 'in' 4 a reason ...)

also, which ver of pgsql is built against/bundled, and with what config? not
sure if ver/config discrepancies with local install will be a prob ...

(b) specific version of wxwidgets?

I upgraded my laptop and developer.pgadmin.org to 2.6.1. Seeing as 2.6
is the stable release, I'd say we track the latest revision unless we
find specific problems. I don't want to go to 2.7.x when it's released
unless we really need to (their release numbering is like ours, where
odd numbers are development versions).

fair nuf.

fwiw, i'm building pgadmin3.dev against:

	cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/pack/cvsroots/wxwidgets co -d
wxWidgets-cvs wxWidgets

which is still reporting after build:

/usr/local/wxwidgets_cvs_dyn/bin/wx-config --list
Default config is mac-unicode-release-2.6

Cheers, Dave.

DL'd the 1.2.2 pkg.

will NOT launch from Finder o dubl-clik. nothing. no console or log entries.

exploring, i note:

   cd ~/Desktop/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/

checking further:

   % open pgAdmin3

of course, nothing ...

   % chmod 755 pgAdmin3
   % open pgAdmin3

and there it is!

also, now, Finder dubl-clicking works, as well ...

the .app lauches OK, and at 1st glance appears (mostly) operational ...

BUT, the "QUIT" menu item is completely disable (grayed out). only way out is
a "Force Quit" fromn finder, or kill @ shell ...

I changed the DIR to be /usr/share/pgsql and /usr/lib/pgsql, but the
errors still occured.

There is a post in the mailing list which fixed the bug, but in my
instance, it seems don't work.

Can anybody help me?

just a guess/hunch

have you tried EXPLICITLY defining BOTH:

[pgadmin-hackers] (re)visiting pgadmin3 with-Cocoa on OSX 10.4?

2005-05-09 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
just wondering if there's been any more/recent thought/discussion re: pgadmin3
on OSX w/ wxwidgets/wxmac built "with-Cocoa" rather than "with-Carbon" ...

i presume its not a trivial job ...
given that Apple now bundles wxwidgewts (albeit an older 2.4.x version, iirc)
with OSX (>= Tiger), does anyone know if it's built with Cocoa or Carbon? the
bundled liibs are certainly .dylibs, rather tha static libs ...

just thinkin'

[pgadmin-hackers] path allocation failure in make of pgadmin3-svn on OSX 10.4 w/ wxwidgets-cvs

2005-05-09 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
after de-fubar'ing my firewall for svn:// access (Thx Dave!), i've been
catching up on trying to get pgadmin3 built on OSX 10.4.

note that wxWidgets 2.6.0 does not build on 10.4 without patching, and even
then i'm seeing some issues. further, it seems that 'corrective efforts' are
going primarily into cvs ... soo, it's wxwidgets-CVS only for me.

starting w/ the 5/8/05 11:02:24 cvs DL of wxwidgets CVS, i separately
(successfully) built both static & dynamic variants into:

/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs-STAT
/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs-DYN
repectively.
checking out the latest svn rev of pgadmin3 (revision 4172)
svn co svn://svn.pgadmin.org/trunk/pgadmin3 pgadmin3STAT-wxSTAT
Checked out revision 4172.
a successful configure for static, appbundle build w/:

--with-wx=/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs-STAT \
--with-wx-config=wx-config \
--with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql \

hi dave,
i'm wondering why this project has chosen the svnserve'd svn:// schema for
the repo rather than web-dav + http://.
A number of reasons, but mainly because the Subversion manual's own
comparison points out that it's much simpler to setup and faster to use. The
only feature we might have used that we've lost out on this way is
per-directory access control, but that's no great loss IMNSHO.

There's no need. Plain old svn has now been tested on various machines and
works OK.

[pgadmin-hackers] pgadmin3 build executable still not stripping correctly on OSX

2005-04-28 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
i'm now (finally) able to successfully/reproducibly build pgadmin3-cvs against
both/either wxWidgets-cvs and wxWidgets-2.6.0.

build/install completes without error, though the executable's still not
stripping correctly:

 case: wxWidgets-2.6.0
	% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
		-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 109547152 Apr 28 17:52
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

	% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
		-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 7804308 Apr 28 18:03
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

 case: wxWidgets-cvs
	% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs2/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
		-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 109586060 Apr 28 17:52

		-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 7839296 Apr 28 18:03
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs2/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

the issue, as per earlier post
(

is.

ideas? is there a legit question that can/should be posted to the autoconf
lists?

hi,
Hm.. I have no idea what going on here... Is there an autoconf guru here
who might provide insight?
hmmm ... why/where is "pg_debug_build=no" NOT being set ...
do we need an EXPLICIT test for "--disable-debug" to set the NO case?
i'm gonna try this without the --disable-debug flag ...
I just checked - the nightly builds are done with neither "--enable-debug"
nor "--disable-debug" specified, and things work correctly...
well, i just rebuilt w/ NO debug flag in the config, i.e.:
   ./configure \
   --enable-appbundle \
   --enable-static \
   --with-wx=/usr/local/wxWidgets-260 \
   --with-wx-config=wx-config \
   --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql \
   --with-pgsql-include=/usr/local/pgsql/include
NOW, the 'make install' output shows:
   ...
   make install-exec-hook
   cd /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS ;\
   mv pgadmin3 tmp ;\
   mv tmp pgAdmin3 ;\
   echo no ;\
if test "no" = "no"; then \
   strip pgAdmin3 ;\
   fi
   no
   ...
AND the executable IS properly stripped:
   % ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 7767372 Apr 26 10:18
   /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
so, what we're seeing is:
   "./configure --disable-debug", fails to set pg_debug_build=no, i.e. sets =
yes.

but,
   "./configure" sets it correctly
FYI, configure is autogenerated, and the snipped that checks
for the debug option is found in acinclude.m4 - but it looks
even more correct there (at least for my autoconf-unsavy eyes...)
looking in acinclude.m4:
   ###
   # Debug build of pgAdmin3 #
   ###
   AC_DEFUN([ENABLE_DEBUG],
   [AC_ARG_ENABLE(debug,
   [ --enable-debug build a debug version of pgAdmin3],
   [pg_debug_build=yes
   CFLAGS="-Wall -g -O0"
   CXXFLAGS="-Wall -g -O0"],
   [pg_debug_build=no])
   ])
   AC_SUBST(pg_debug_build)
looks ok to me as well ...
ok, this has got to be something obvious/simple, but i'm missing it.

hi florian,

Hm.. this is strange... I works for the nightly builds...
In src/Makefile.am, you should find the lines:
 if test "$(pg_debug_build)" = "no"; then \
 strip pgAdmin3 ;\
 fi
Could you put an "echo $(pg_debug_build)" before the if,
and post the output?
ok. per request,
   @216
mv tmp pgAdmin3 ;\
   +++   echo $(pg_debug_build) ;\
if test "$(pg_debug_build)" = "no"; then \
strip pgAdmin3 ;\
fi
indeed, NO STRIP occurred:
% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 109540252 Apr 26 09:03
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

here's the 'make install' output
   ...
   make install-exec-hook
   cd /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS ;\
   mv pgadmin3 tmp ;\
   mv tmp pgAdmin3 ;\
   echo yes ;\
if test "yes" = "no"; then \
   strip pgAdmin3 ;\
   fi
   yes
   ...
hmmm, $pg_debug_build is reporting as YES despite my config as:
   ./configure \
   --enable-appbundle \
   --enable-static \
   --disable-debug \
   --with-wx=/usr/local/wxWidgets-260 \
   --with-wx-config=wx-config \
   --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql \
   --with-pgsql-include=/usr/local/pgsql/include
checking/verifying in "src/Makefile":
   @279
   pg_debug_build = yes
and in /.configure:
   @4872
   # Check whether --enable-debug or --disable-debug was given.
if test "${enable_debug+set}" = set; then
 enableval="$enable_debug"
 pg_debug_build=yes
   CFLAGS="-Wall -g -O0"
   CXXFLAGS="-Wall -g -O0"
   else
 pg_debug_build=no
   fi;
looks ok (doesn't it?).
hmmm ... why/where is "pg_debug_build=no" NOT being set ...
do we need an EXPLICIT test for "--disable-debug" to set the NO case?
i'm gonna try this without the --disable-debug flag ...

it links sucessfully
Did you "make clean" your source-tree after switching wx version?

2005-04-25 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
coming back from vacation :-( i noticed that wxwidgets 2.6.0 has been released,
and that there are now nightly OSX builds available (nice! florian)

after updating to OSX 10.3.9, i've done a sanity run for myself:
wxWidgets-CVS (4/25/05 11:34:29) & wxWidgets-2.6.0 both:
../configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs \

Maybe my limited knowledge of the english language caused confusion here,
so I'll rephrase "I used a fresh checkout of pgadmin3, and, apart from

What I wanted to say way:
I did a fresh checkout
Then I modified the permissions of complete-bundle.sh
Without _any_ further modifications I did
sh ./bootstrap
./configure
make
make install
This worked, and produced a valid .app (It crashes when opening a dialog, but
that is a wx problem I guess)
sorry. it's NOT your english ... it's my morning :-S
you were perfectly clear/correct =)

Does the file /usr/local/wxWidgets-255/lib/libwx_macu-2.5.5.r
exist on your system? If so, I'd say that your build
of wx cvs is in some way broken - maybe you should
report that to the wx mailinglist.
yes it does exist.

the problem seems to be that the pgadmin3 make install is expecting (a) a file
that's NOT there (/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs/lib/libwx_macu-2.6.0.r), AND (b) has
a 3-digit version # rather than the other files in the dir, which are 2-digit.

but, i dunno where the problem stems from as yet ... the "SysError 0 during
open" is not very enlightening.

quick glances at ./pkg/mac/Makefile.in & ./pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh aren't
immediately clear (to me) as the source of the problem.

if not immediately obvious to y'all, i'll rebuild all with debug-ON and see
what ktrace'll do 4 me

[pgadmin-hackers] pgadmin3 on OSX ... ALMOST out-of-the-box build; still need fixes --> perms on complete-bundle.sh & autostrip

2005-04-14 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
building w/ wxwidgets-255, now w/ DEBUG = OFF, but still w/ the Csomo patch, a
'standard' build of pgadmin-cvs HEAD as:

   cd /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs
unsetenv CFLAGS CPPFLAGS CXX CXXFLAGS LDFLAGS LDDLFLAGS LD_PREBIND LC_ALL
   LANG LINGUAS
   setenv CPPFLAGS "-I/usr/local/ssl/include"
setenv LDFLAGS "-L/usr/local/ssl/lib -lssl -lcrypto -L/usr/local/lib
-lexpat -lintl -lgettextlib -lpng -ljpeg -ltiff -lz"
   sh bootstrap
   ./configure \
   --enable-appbundle \
   --enable-static \
   --disable-debug \
   --with-wx=/usr/local/wxWidgets-255 \
   --with-wx-config=wx-config \
   --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql \
   --with-pgsql-include=/usr/local/pgsql/include
completes ok.
% make all
is fine too.
% sudo make install
however, fails ...
the problem is in pkg/mac/Makefile.in:
   @314
   @APPBUNDLE_TRUE@./complete-bundle.sh "$(bundledir)"
this will only execute if the perms on complete-bundle.sh are set to EXECUTE.
unfortunately, they're not:
% ls -al pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh
   -rw-r--r-- 1 devuser admin 1306 Apr 14 12:50
../pgadmin3-cvsORIG/pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh

to fix either:
(a) change the perms of the file
   % chmod a+x complete-bundle.sh
   % ls -al pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 devuser admin 1306 Apr 12 00:36
pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh
or,
(b) mod the Makefile
   ---@APPBUNDLE_TRUE@./complete-bundle.sh "$(bundledir)"
   +++@APPBUNDLE_TRUE@/bin/sh ./complete-bundle.sh "$(bundledir)"

after making change (a), 'make install' runs/completes fine
% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
	-rwxr-xr-x 1 devuser admin 108638440 Apr 14 16:07
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

but, given the executable size, autostrip still doesn't look right
after,
% strip /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
it's better
% ls -al /usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3
	-rwxr-xr-x 1 devuser admin 9630924 Apr 13 22:14
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs/pgAdmin3.app/Contents/MacOS/pgAdmin3

and the .app launches w/o error, and no crashes so far in operation

Re: [pgadmin-hackers] wxMac CVS & pgadmin3

2005-04-14 Thread OpenMacNews
hi,
I used wxWidgets CVS, mainly to see if it works... Hm.. well.. it doesn't
The resulting app starts, but crashes when I try to open a dialog ("Add
Server",
"Preferences", ... )
Has anyone here (especially you, OpenMacNews ;-) ) done a build of pgadmin
with wxMac CVS that works? I'm not sure if I made a mistake while building,
or if it's really a wx bug.
not yet ...
as you, i've built succesfully now w/ wx-cvs
pgadmin3.app launches (currently with an error: "Couldn't open a tips.txt
file"), but crashes, e.g., on "Add Server" (crashdump below). but, so far, it
_seems_ any menu activity causes the prob ...

unfortunately, i've also built pgadmin with DEBUG-off, and/or stripped ... so
no ktrace.

after rebuilding a wx-v255 pgadmin3 build w/ all today's applied patches, i'll
give it a try w/ wx-cvs.

cheers,
richard

2005-04-14 Thread OpenMacNews
hi,
since abt the time Dave had announced the commits integrating
Florian's
patches, I'm no longer able to successfully 'make' pgadmin3
CVS HEAD on OSX.
Unless it failed in any of the agent code (for which I also committed an
update at that time) I doubt it's a code problem.
per other posts, turns out this was due to a dependence on wxwidgets needing to
be built w/ --enable-debug

after a successful build of wxWidgets-255 + StevenCsomor's
patch, any/all
subsequent attempts to build pgadmin3 HEAD:
Did you build the OGL lib from the wx contrib dir? The build system
probably doesn't check for that like it does for stc (Andreas only added
it recently, and I don't think he updated the autoconf stuff).
yes, i've built both the reqts: STC & OGL

   % touch a
   % mv a A
mv: `a' and `A' are the same file
   % mv a A2
   % mv A2 A
odd.
is there a setting somewhere abt this? who knew?
why is the pgadmin3 'make' seemingly dependent on wxwidgets' DEBUG =
on?
I just found out why:
When compiled with debug, the wx-libs are named e.g libwx_macud,
when compiled without, they are named libwx_macu.
The wx-configure check in acinclude.m4 detects wx in both cases,
but doesn't actually add the wx-libs to the list of to-be-linked-to
libs in the second case.
I'm in the process of fixing this - expect a patch later today.
great! i missed that completely ...

hi all,
explring necessary mods to pgadmin3-cvs to prep for wxwidgets-2.6, a couple of

this does the trick ...

Re: [pgadmin-hackers] Roadmap for pgAdmin3 on OSX

2005-04-13 Thread OpenMacNews
Hi,
Are you sure you recompiled _all_ pgadmin files - if you just run configure
and specify a different wx-config, the build system doesn't realize it
has to rebuild everything. I had some unresolved symbols when switching
from wx 2.5.4 to 2.5.5, and they went away after doing "make clean; make"
i always do either make clean/distclean
but in these cases i've been re dl'ing into fresh dirs to be sure ...
i'm trying the wxMac 2.5.5 release at the moment ...
Be sure to include fix by "Stefan Csomor":

OK
Well, pgadmin needs to know how to start and stop postgres -
on osx - so we at least need to know the "servicename".
Of course this can be made configureable - but if there
was a "official way" for these things on osx, we could
save some config options.
Well, the 'official way' is to use the StartupItem script in
/Library/StartupItems for 3rd party, and/or /System/Library/StartupItems for
Apple-installed ...

I simply don't recall if PGSql installs one automatically ... I don't think so
-- as I write my own and use in independent of the Apple hierarchy.

that said, its as 'easy' as "(path to)/startup_script start" or "(path
to)/startup_script start"

the script can be named anything, and controls postmaster/pg_ctl directly.
if you like, i can post my script ...
are you thinking of simply using a LaunchServices assignment (i.e.,
using the GetInfo dialog's "Open with ..." facility?)
Kind of... see my other post in this thread - we'd need a way to remeber
the connection this sql was used in, or a way for the use to specify that.
ah. my mistake.
i thought your were just worrying about getting the editable-query to open in a
selectable query editor ...

i see that you're talking about launching a query.
what i've done on occassion is simply write a shell-script and wrap it with a
finder-dubl-clickable wrapper ...

not "production quality", tho ...
ad 3): This is a bug in configure - but I still don't know how to
fix/workaround this.
do you have a thread reference for the particular problem, or a breif
description?
See my other mail in this thread.
ok.
I've had no apparent issue linking/building against my external SSL
build; however, i haven't gotten as far as testing function ...
Have you checked wether you actually got ssl support - I can link
against a ssl-enabled libpq just fine - but the pgadmin configure
doesn't detect the ssl-support, and disabled ssl-support for pgadmin.
i will as soon as i beat my build problems ... suddenly i've now got unresolved
symbol issues all over the place. argh.

Since pgAdmin3 should now compile & run on OSX when using wxMac HEAD
i'm *still* having issues w/ the 'new' 2.6-branch HEAD (cref: my other

i'm trying the wxMac 2.5.5 release at the moment ...
and pgAdmin3 HEAD, it guess it's time to think about further improvements.
1) postgres start/stop support
2) open ".sql" with pgadmin?
3) ssl support
4) Standard location for postgresql.conf and pg_hba.conf?
5) Nightly Builds
ad 1), 4): Depends on weather there exists a "official" binary
version of postgres for OSX.
i'm unclear as to why this depends on an "official" bin? could this not simply
point to a given 'custom' bin path, or presume that our $PATH has been set
correctly?

ad 2): Can you click on a saved sql query in windows, and
it is opened in pgadmin3? If so, I could try to do the same
for OSX
are you thinking of simply using a LaunchServices assignment (i.e., using the
GetInfo dialog's "Open with ..." facility?)

ad 3): This is a bug in configure - but I still don't know how to

Re: [pgadmin-hackers] wxWidgets version# update (v2.5 --> v2.6) -->

2005-04-12 Thread OpenMacNews
hi andreas,
i just updated to latest wxWidgets HEAD, which is now reporting as v2.6,
rather than previouly as v2.5, and building/installing; changed sometime
today ...
We should wait a bit to update our sources for 2.6, to avoid breakage of our
nightly builds. OTOH, it's a good idea to test wx CVS to notice possible last
minute problems invented in wx before 2.6 is frozen. I'd really like pgAdmin3
to use vanilla 2.6, without any fixes.
so please continue testing wx CVS, we'll use 2.6 as soon as it is released
(which will be RSN).
although wx-2.6 CVS builds w/o error on OSX 10.3.8, a subsequent pgadmin3 make
dies w/ HUNDREDS of 'undefined symbol' warnings referencing "wx*" symbols.

although i'd made some testing changes in acinlcude.m4 to reference the 2.6 dir
tree, and get me past the config checks:

 % perl -pi -e 's/wx-2.5/wx-2.6/g' acinclude.m4
 % perl -pi -e 's/2.5\*\)/2.6\*\)/g' acinclude.m4
 % perl -pi -e 's/WX_VERSION="2.5"/WX_VERSION="2.6"/g' acinclude.m4
i'd venture i've missed some lib/include refs elsewhere ...
i'll see what i can blindly find, but i'd gather you'd know better what
changes/preparations need to be made for the "2.6" vs "2.5" references.

cheers,

Not sure what you mean by propagated? They're in CVS, so if you do a cvs

wait until tomorrow, or apply the patches yourself.

[pgadmin-hackers] issues w/ 'new' OSX patches

2005-04-11 Thread OpenMacNews
hi florian,
back to progress on a scratch build.
first, just fyi, your 'newest' patches are (mis?)named:
pgadmi3-bundle.diff
pgadmi3-newfiles.tgz
rather than
pgadmin3-bundle.diff
pgadmin3-newfiles.tgz
(which kept me guessing for a bit ... amazing how you can stare at similar
things and NOT see the difference ...)

after successfully re-building today's wxWidgets HEAD
../configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs \
--with-mac \
--disable-shared \
--disable-debug \
--enable-unicode \
--with-regex
DL'ing latest pgadmin3 HEAD, and applying your two patches:
% patch -p0 < pgadmi3-bundle.diff
patching file Makefile.am
patching file acinclude.m4
patching file configure.ac
patching file pkg/mac/Info.plist
patching file src/Makefile.am
% gnutar zxvf pgadmi3-newfiles.tgz
pkg/mac/Info-Debug.plist
pkg/mac/Makefile.am
pkg/mac/complete-bundle.sh
pkg/mac/debug-bundle.sh
pkg/mac/pgadmin3.icns
a first step of:
% sh bootstrap
now dies at:
	+ '[' -x config ']'
	+ aclocal
	/usr/local/share/aclocal-1.9/libmcrypt.m4:17: warning: underquoted definition
of AM_PATH_LIBMCRYPT
	  run info '(automake)Extending aclocal'
	  or see http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Extending-aclocal

	configure.ac: installing `config/install-sh'
	configure.ac: installing `config/missing'
	src/Makefile.am: installing `config/depcomp'
	configure.ac:8: installing `config/config.guess'
	configure.ac:8: installing `config/config.sub'
configure.ac:45: required file `pkg/Makefile.in' not found

looking in the 'pgadmi3-bundle.diff' patched configure.ac, i note @ 45:
42 AC_CONFIG_FILES([Makefile
43 src/Makefile
44 pkg/Makefile
45 pkg/mac/Makefile])
46 AC_OUTPUT
yet there's certainly no Makefile* in pkg/ as referenced in line#44, i.e. --
/usr/ports/pgadmin3-cvs % ls pkg
CVS fc1 mandrake pgadmin3.desktop slackware win32
debian mac nsis redhatsrc
so, looking in your patch, 'pgadmi3-bundle.diff', there's the obvious
source:
139 AC_CONFIG_FILES([Makefile
140 - src/Makefile])
141 + src/Makefile
142 +pkg/Makefile
143 +pkg/mac/Makefile])
144 AC_OUTPUT
but i'm wondering what line#142 is referring to.
hmmm this worked earlier ...

If you have the time, it would be great. If you rebuild from scratch anyway,
please use the latest patch from www.phlo.org. The bundle is now named
pgAdmin3.app (to please Dave ;-) ), and I'd like this version of the patch
to be committed to cvs. I you manage to test it first, I'd be gratefull.
ok, i'll start from scratch on both wxwidgets & pgadmin3 ... good excuse to go
get a margarita, anyway.

what build scenario is typically being tested here? wxwidgets & pgadmin
both static, both shared, etc?
I compiled wxwindows as shared lib, since there were some wx-mac bugs until
about
15 minutes ago, which I wanted to be able to debug... Some kind fellow
from wx-dev provided a fix today, and the other problem was fixed a few days
ago.
I don't know of any other wx bugs influencing pgadmin, so I might switch back
to
a static lib...
ok.
so, i'll build both from HEAD, static, debug off, with your newset patch ...
and will report back when all's done.

Re: [pgadmin-hackers] pgAdmin3.app size?

2005-04-11 Thread OpenMacNews
hi,
246 MB? yikes! that's big ...

Hm... my debug build are usually that large,
but I have wx built as shared lib, and those
libs are therefore copied into the bundle (by complete-bundle.sh),
to make it self-contained
for reference, my wxWidgets was built statically as:
   ../configure \
   --prefix=/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs \
   --with-mac \
   --disable-shared \
   --enable-debug \
   --enable-unicode \
   --with-regex
For a non-debug, non-shared wx build I get the following
output from "du -s -h *" for PgAdminIII.app/Contents
   0BFrameworks
4.0KInfo.plist
7.4MMacOS
  48KResources
  10MSharedSupport
The whole bundle is 18MB
Could you try to run "strip"
on the executable inside the bundle, and see if it reduces
the size? Maybe the stripping step is for some reason left on
while installing
let's see what's going on ...
right after a clean build/install of pgadmin3 w/:
   ./configure \
   --enable-appbundle \
   --enable-static \
   --enable-debug \
   --with-wx=/usr/local/wxWidgets-cvs \
   --with-wx-config=wx-config \
   --with-pgsql=/usr/local/pgsql \
   --with-pgsql-include=/usr/local/pgsql/include
../PgAdminIII.app/Contents % du -s -h *
   3.2MFrameworks
   4.0KInfo.plist
   233MMacOS
48KResources
10MSharedSupport
../PgAdminIII.app/Contents/MacOS % ls -al *
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 244080280 Apr 11 08:54 PgAdminIII
../PgAdminIII.app/Contents/MacOS % strip PgAdminIII
../PgAdminIII.app/Contents/MacOS % ls -al *
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 9766288 Apr 11 14:41 PgAdminIII
and, just for completeness
../PgAdminIII.app/Contents % du -s -h *
   3.2MFrameworks
   4.0KInfo.plist
   9.3MMacOS
48KResources
10MSharedSupport
hmmm ... much better.
AND, the .app still launches from Finder nicely.
The .app bundle I analyzed above is quite old, and I remeber that
I stripped it manually - but IIRC I fixed this, and it should
strip while installing now...
hmmm ... unclear, then.
Probably - though 246MB is pretty big!! On slackware linux it's just
under 47MB. You could try stripping it if OSX has a 'strip' program. On
slack that reduces the executable to about 10MB (strip removes the debug
symbols in case you weren't aware).
now i am. thx!

## QUESTION(s)

i'm presuming that that's:
(a) normal/correct, and
(b) in part, due to:
  --enable-static
  --enable-debug
yes?
just a thought ... it would be nice (eventually) to be able to trim down such

dunno (yet) if disabling debug + any optimizations will help.

[pgadmin-hackers] close-but-not-quite w/ pgadmin3.app on osx 10.3.8

2005-04-10 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
fwiw, i understand that this may be 'old news' for many of you, but -- as I'd
had some issues getting up-n-running, I just thought i'd share details of what
I've done so far ... and where I'm currently stalled.

in short, I'm on my way to building pgadmin3 cvs head on OSX 10.3.8 as a
clickable .app.

my dev env is a bit mod'd, and i'm linking against some of my own builds, so
here's some of the relevant env/version info:

Darwin tiedgar 7.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.8.0: Wed Dec 22 14:26:17 PST
2004; root:xnu/xnu-517.11.1.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc

	expat cvsHEAD

so, it all looks ok (?) so far ...
but, when I try to dubl-clik the PgAdminIII, i get a dialog:
'You cannot open the application"PgAdminII" because it may be damaged or
incomplete.'

with no output to the Console/System Log h. ?
also, i'm a little unclear why the install does not install the
'PgAdminIII.app' where --prefix tells it to, but, rather, in the src tree ...
but i'd guess that's an arguable point.

gonna google & code-dig a bit; any suggestions in the meantime will be
appreciated!

richard

hi,
If you want to build an .app bundle for pgadmin, please try the latest version
of the .app support. You can find a diff and a tgz on www.phlo.org.
You need two apply the patch, and then extract the tgz, both while being
int the root-dir if your pgadmin sources.
already there -- got your post abt the patches, read up in thread a bit,
applied and started over.

should be done building in a little bit.

[RESOLVED] Re: [pgadmin-hackers] getting past wxMac-cvs build?

2005-04-10 Thread OpenMacNews
hi florian,
thanks for the helpful reply!
I didn't observe the Rez/DeRez difficulties you had.
apparently, someone had (cref: [wx-dev]) ... for those that are interested, it
turns out it was a problem with an unavailable display.

after some poking around with no success, i'd moved to another build machine
and
-- all was OK!?

on the build box, i'd MISconfigured the DISPLAY ... so, although i was locally
exec'ing -- rather than ssh'd somewhere, as in Robin @ [wx-dev]'s example --
the display
WAS unavailable.

simply moving to a machine where the local DISPLAY was config'd correctly, and
correcting the misconfig'd box, cleared up my probs ...
   /usr/local/wxMac-cvs/bin % ls -al wxrc-2.5
   -rwxr-xr-x 1 dev wheel 811808 Apr 8 22:30 wxrc-2.5
it seems others *here* have had success with this, so ...
Building wx was very smooth for me...
If you just want to hack on pgadmin, and not on wx, I could
email you the result of my wx build.
thx for the offer, but i think i'll be OK =)
at the moment, with a 'good' wxMac in place -- i'm building pgadmin3.
i'm just having a minor issue on make w/:
   ld: Undefined symbols:
   _libintl_bindtextdomain
   _libintl_dgettext
   make[2]: *** [pgadmin3] Error 1
   make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
   make: *** [all] Error 2
and wondering where the trouble is. my pgsql *is* built with enable-nls, so i
think there may be some issue ... i'll report back if i find any probs.

cheers,
richard

[pgadmin-hackers] getting past wxMac-cvs build?

2005-04-08 Thread OpenMacNews
hi all,
1st, i know this is not, directly, a pgadmin issue.
i've posted this (er ... similar) issue on wx-dev as well, but as my ultimate
goal is to 'get to ' pgadminIII on MacOSX *and* there seems to be active
interest/activity on this list in the same, i'll unabashedly crosspost/beg for
help *here* ...

i'm diving in to try building the latest wxMac (both v2.5.5 & cvs trunk) on OSX
10.3.8 on my powerbook G4 (800 MHz, 1 GB RAM).

after reading , a simple/successful
'configure' with:
   mkdir -p macosx-build
   cd macosx-build
   ../configure \
   --prefix=/usr/ports/wxMacINSTALL \
   --with-mac \
   --disable-shared \
   --disable-debug
finishes without errors.
a subsequent 'make all' of wxMac progresses to this point:
   /Developer/Tools/SetFile -t APPL wxrc
   /Developer/Tools/Rez -d __UNIX__ -useDF ../src/mac/carbon/apprsrc.r
../src/mac/carbon/carbrsrc.r ../src/mac/carbon/corersrc.r -o
lib/libwx_mac-2.5.5.rsrc
   /Developer/Tools/DeRez lib/libwx_mac-2.5.5.rsrc Carbon.r -useDF
lib/libwx_mac-2.5.5.r
and just sits. For a very long time.
Well, actually, it seems to me still active in a DeRez task, as 'top' shows it
still crankin' away after 6+ hours (total time ~ 8 hours) ...
   15904 DeRez 35.8% 6:21:49 125 106 296K 1.82M 6.26M
60.5M

i've now gotten feedback that this is NOT normal; tho, this behavior HAS been
seen before ...

I've had this problem too, but only when I run the build when logged in
remotely via ssh. If I run the build from a local Terminal window then this
step just takes less than a second. My guess is that DeRez needs to have
access to the display for some reason and isn't smart enough to figure out
that it can't get it.
that said, i *am* building in a local Terminal window ... apparently to no
avail.

now, i _have_ found is this list's archives that there have been 'issues' with
v2.5.4, resolved in CVS, but afaik, not THIS issue.

it seems others *here* have had success with this, so ...
any pointers as to how to get wxMac built so I can get to pgadmin work would be
much appreciated! =)

cheers,
richard
