The output of the "mount" command without arguments would be useful. Yes I did an initdb on $HOME/var/pgsql/data, that wasn't it. After consulting the irc channel I was shown a workaround: In postgresql.conf I had to explicitly set 'wal_sync_method = fsync' (which was commented out), for whatever reason the default was causing the panic.
