Thanks to some assistance from another forum, I was finally able to install
version 8.2, using the filemon.exe utitlity to track down file permission
problems. Version 8.3 never did install. Here are the changes I made.
Disclaimer, I tried a lot of different things, so it may not be everything.

Installers:
Success with installers: 8.1.11-1, 8.2.5-1 and 8.2.6-2

1. Created windows user name: postgres

2. Under Local security policy > granted user rights assignment:

Thanks for the response. I checked the event viewer. The main error it reports
is:

2008-02-20 Thread Dee
Hi. This is my first post to this list. So please let me know if my question
is in the wrong area.

I am trying to install version 8.3.0.1 on an old windows 2000 box I inherited.
Firewall s/w is installed but disabled. I am logged in as a user with
Administrative rights. When the installing gets to the step "Starting

terminate the application."

It is an old box with lots of programs installed. So it may well be a
configuration problem. Anyone have any suggestions how I might go about
diagnosing the problem? Btw, I am not a w2k admin, but if you need more
information, please let me know. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Have you wiped out whatever user was responsible for starting the service?
That's both something that could cause your error and something that would
survive the re-intall regime you've tried so far.

[GENERAL] install problem

2007-12-17 Thread Bill Taylor

Hey,

I am working on testing our windows version of software
which uses postgress on a machine with XP Pro and 512
meg of memory.

The very first time I installed, it was fine except for the
fact it was only listening on the localhost 127.0.0.1
and I need it listening on its ip address.

Since, I have not been able to re-install. I have tried thoroughly
cleaning machine and registry. The issue always comes back to
a 1920 error, do you have permissions in the event viewer
and always fails to start the service.

I even wiped away my test box for our product and
installed a fresh copy of windows on top of
my old version.

zip :-)

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? We have an end of the year
rush and we have a number of people world wide who would be using
this once we can actually test it.

[GENERAL] install problem

2005-07-11 Thread wayne schlemitz
I have been trying to install postgresql 7.4 and 8.0
with no success. Found what I believe to be rpm's for
my SuSE 8.0 . The 8.0.2 is in /usr/local/src/postgres
and the 7.4 is in /home/wayne/temp/postgres. have the
following directories and told they may be of help
var/db/
var/lib/
usr/local/
the system tells me that I need libraries I have found
the ones that it has a problem with.
libpq++.so.4/usr/lib/
libpq.so.2 /usr/lib/libpq.so.2 & libpq.so2.2
libpqeasy.so.2 /usr/lib/libpq.so.2 & libpq.so.2.2
postgresql-libs /home/wayne/postgresql

If I knew where the libraries are to be I can put them
there. I am confused and appreciate the help.

Re: [GENERAL] install problem

2004-10-09 Thread Bernard Clement
Dear Wayne,

Hum! you are not following exactly the instructions for a "Short Installation"
which is:
./configure
gmake
su
gmake install
adduser postgres
mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data
chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data
su - postgres
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test

Anyway, what did you enter after "useradd"?
That command requires at least one parameter, the new user name
which in this case should be postgres.

Once that is done, the "su postgres" will work without any password since
you are running it from root.

Regards,

Bernard

Re: [GENERAL] install problem

2004-10-09 Thread Scott Frankel
If I understand your description of the problem sufficiently, I believe
you're
running into trouble at the "su postres" step.

Although I'm quite new to postgres, I do know that creating a user
account
named "postgres" is recommended, if not required, by the installation
process.
Entering "su postgres" on the cmd-line switches the user (su) in that
shell to
username: postgres -- it's not invoking a program, per se. Then
logging in,
even via su, requires password authentication.

Hope this helps -
Scott

We can't help you from such a handwavy description. Show us *exactly*
what you typed and *exactly* what messages you got (cut-and-paste from
your terminal window is good), and then we might be able to offer
better-than-guessing answers.

I'd also suggest looking in the postmaster logfile to see if there are
any informative messages there.

hello,
I finished installing pg but have two question.
1.In the install doc it makes reference to a section called "Regression
Test". I can't seem to
find this. So, I have done this test yet.

When I try : > createdb testdb
I get the following error; pg_encoding_to_char.
I didn't see any errors when I installed. So can someone tell me hoe to
correct this?
I have version 7.0.3
