[Pharo-dev] ***Important*** Snapcraft pharo package for Pharo 50

2017-01-06 Thread Stephane Ducasse
Hi pharoers

I want to share with you my experience with trying to use Pharo at the
University here on Linux.
I think that they are on Ubuntu and ... the sys admin told me that they
cannot install Pharo :(
Since I'm not expert in Linux install I cannot help ;(

So we will probably use windows.
Now they told me that what would be nice is to get a snap for Pharo
based on snapcraft.io.

Does any of you have a snap description or willing to help so that we can
get
a snap for Pharo50? then for Pharo60?

ps: (maybe a good moment to start testing iceberg and moving projects to git
support?) If you execute this:

Metacello new
baseline: 'Iceberg';
repository: 'github://npasserini/iceberg:multi-remotes';
load.
IceRepository defaultBackendType: #IceLibgitLocalRepository.

in one of the VMs here: https://dl.bintray.com/pharo-project/pharo-vm/
 (the 32bits versions)
latest version should work.

*except* in macOS where you need to modify

LGitLibrary>>macModuleName

to answer 'libgit2.dylib'

2017-01-06 Thread Dale Henrichs

Stef,

RE: why they "cannot install Pharo" --- I'd guess it is because Pharo
requires 32 bit libraries and those are not available in the current
Linux releases by default ... to install the 32 bit libraries requires
sudo privileges and students aren't going to be able to do it themselves
and the sysadmins aren't going to want to have to add 32 bit libraries
to a bunch of linux machines just for pharo ... just a guess .

2017-01-06 Thread Damien Pollet
Docker seems pretty nice as well, with the added bonus that it can be
hosted on Mac and Windows, and is probably a bit lighter since containers
are not full-system.

About installing Pharo, I'd guess that the adhoc install procedure is a
problem. Whatever the dependencies, it's easier for admins to install stuff
if it's just another package that fits with the rest of their distribution.

How should I understand 12 * 4 hours?
12 hours by student in a team of four?

If it is so, it is not that much as I guess again students are new to
both Pharo (you did not elaborate on their background regarding Pharo)
and even newer to the application to collaborate with.

With that perspective, if my guesses are right, I did a selection of Dr.
Geo bugs for the students to work on. I also rate the bug difficulties
in a scale of 1 to 3. Some are really easy to fix, at least for me as I
have the background knowledge, but the student will have to spend time
to understand the source code, moreover some bug once fixed need to be
documented in the user guides. All in all I selected 14 issues I think
the students can reasonably work on.
