[Phono-L] Early Standard
My early Standard is #834 and it has a gear cover. I have always prized it because it has a "Bacigalupi" decal in the front where "Edison" decals are found on later Standards. Does anyone know how late the smaller winding shafts were used on Standards? I bought an original slotted crank for my machine at Union last year (thanks Wild Bill) and I have a nice reproduction around here somewhere if anyone needs it. See you at Union! Actually, number 4 is in Scott Corbett's collection. Unless Charley bought it from him. [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
So no one can tell me how many takes of "In The Baggage Coach Ahead" Edison released by Vernon Dalhart?
[Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
Jack Palmer's book shows that Dalhart did the record on April 13, 1925, Matrix 10315-C. I take this to mean that take #3 was the one issued, but there is no note of any other take being issued. The DD number was 51557, and the BA was 5011. I hope that bthis is what you wanted. > [Original Message] > From: Robert Wright > To: Antique Phonograph List > Date: 5/26/2007 6:04:23 PM > Subject: [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question > > So no one can tell me how many takes of "In The Baggage Coach Ahead" Edison > released by Vernon Dalhart? > > ___ > Phono-L mailing list > http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
[Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
Thanks for looking that up for me, Douglas! Greatly appreciated. I was hoping that someone out there had a copy of Ron Dethlefson & Ray Wile's 2 volume, 800pg complete listing of Edison Diamond Disc recordings, published in 1977. I think. When I found an Edison jobber record and contacted Tim Graycyk about it, he put me in contact with Jack Palmer and Ron Dethlefson, and Ron was kind enough to write me a post card explaining that the recording I'd found was listed on page 396 of this compendium of which I speak. Unfortunately, I don't remember any other details about the book(s), nor have I ever stumbled across them online. So does anyone out there have a copy of this work? It would tell me what I need to know. I'm trying to collect every take of "Baggage Coach" by Dalhart that was released. My DD copy (that Jack graciously sent me as a gift) has "10315-B-1- 5" scratched in the runoff, so it seems there are at least 2 takes issued on DD alone. The take I have on my BA 5011 is certainly a different performance than this DD Jack gave me. Can anyone else help shed some light on this? Somewhere I have a Dalhart version on Sears, Roebuck's Challenger label, which might mean he recorded it for Columbia. Eric Stott
[Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
I just caught my mistake as I was sending that! Darn it. I meant to say I'm trying to collect every take Dalhart did for Edison. I have Dalhart singing this song on Victor, Supertone, and ... something else... can't remember... 3 or 4 different standard 78 labels, and it seems the only times he sang the entire lyric were for the 4-minute Edison releases, as far as I can tell. Thanks again for the responses. I just emailed Ron through his site and asked if it was something he could look up for me. It's a pretty lengthy song if taken at a reasonable tempo- I don't think you could fit all the verses on one 10 inch side, though I believe by omitting a chorus he comes close.

If I understand what you're asking, the book is available from Mainspring Press. Do a Google, and you'll have it. > [Original Message] > From: Robert Wright > To: Antique Phonograph List > Date: 5/26/2007 9:18:31 PM > Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question > > Thanks for looking that up for me, Douglas! It very well may be... Dalhart recorded it for some 57 different labels or something like that. - Original Message - From: "Douglas Houston" To: "Antique Phonograph List" Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2007 10:09 PM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question >I have the song somewhere on the Silvertone (Sears) label. [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
If B & C are known, it's a safe bet that A was also issued. It was standard Edison practice to get 3 good takes & put all into production to speed the process.
[Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question
Thanks, Dan! That's exactly the kinda info I've been looking for! Any idea what his policy was regarding the BA's? Are there likely multiple takes out there on BA 5011 as well? If so, is there any way to tell aside from listening carefully? - Original Message - From: "Dan Kj" To: "Antique Phonograph List" Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2007 10:42 PM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Edison/Dalhart question > If B & C are known, it's a safe bet that A was also issued.
