Re: [Phono-L] CURIOUS MACHINE

2011-04-24 Thread phonophan
These German machines are very difficult to nail down. There was S much
variety, and SOOO many variations. And so frequently unmarked. And so
frequently "adapted" by subsequent generations. The odd wooden horn sounds
plausibly correct. Replaced motor? Well, trying to locate the correct one could
be impossible, based on the VAST variety of motors in use at the time. But what
a cool looking cabinet! Why not post a picture for the group?

While on the subject of Euro talking machines, allow me to shameless plug a new
book that is just about to be released. It is truly a long-awaited event in our
hobby.

"HISMASTER'S GRAMOPHONE"

by Brian Oakley and ChristopherProudfoot

The "HisMaster's Voice" Gramophones of Victor's Britishand
European affiliates are commonly seen but have not been thoroughly
understood until now, with the release of this hardcoverbook, 12" x 9",
276 pages, more than 450 primarily colorillustrations, truly a
beautiful and substantial volume.Decades of tireless research by these
leading experts in the field hasresulted in a book indispensable to any
collector of antique talkingmachines.

I am going to be carrying this book, and I urge all of you to consider it --
primarily because Brian and Christopher greatly deserve our support for this
monumental effort they have made, at a huge personal financial outlay. Please
visit my Web site at www.phonophan.com, and on the main page see info about
ordering this important volume. Thanks for allowing me this bare-faced
commercial interlude.

Cheers to all,

[Phono-L] RCA horn driver needed

The drivers are rebuildable if you like to rewind coils. Another option is
to use 1920's era headphones as drivers.

Thought I'd throw in a wisecrack or so. That driver was made of a
loudspeaker 100A driver, pushing an olrthophonic aluminum diaphragm, as on
the sound boxes. You could find a LS 100A with a shot cone, and use the
driver on the horn driver unit. You're just lucky that you're not looking
for the electro-dynamic driver, as used on the 10-51 orthophonic Victrolas!

I might add that, if you could get those drivers to George Epple in
Baltimore for a magnet re-charge, he has a real wizzbanger of a magnet
charger. It has been told by several people that you'd almost never believe
the difference in a magnetic speaker. I have a LS 100 in my Victor
Hyperion, and should send it to George. I'd surely like to hear it as it
was new.

Re: [Phono-L] RCA horn driver needed

2011-04-24 Thread William Zucca
I have three machines that came without any driver; 2 of the small ones and
1 of the big ones. They were used in about 5 RCA radios, 4 Brunswick
phonographs w/Radiola, 2 Victor phonographs w/ Radiola, and an RCA horn
speaker. Yes, they are rebuildable if you have them in the first place.

Re: [Phono-L] Off Topic - Radio Conversion

2011-04-24 Thread Vinyl Visions

A guy was recently throwing this old radio in the trash... it was under a house
for years, muddy, rusted guts, black plastic painted with white house paint...
trash!!! So, I did what any "normal" scavenging collector would do, I recycled
it. I made it into a retro iPod dock which charges my iTouch and plays
wonderful old radio music on Radio Dismuke or whatever source. I never got into
radios like phonos, because I didn't want to listen to current music on an old
radio... part of the nostalgia of phonographs is the actual music played just
like it once was. Now it's the best of both worlds.
