I replaced the limit loop which was missing when I received it. The original jewel is nice on this one. It easily fits in and out of the carriage. [Phono-L] Amberola 30 erratic speed
Your problem is in the mainspring. It needs to be pulled and ALL the old lubrication removed. 40 steel wool and wd40 will do that. Relube and put the spring back in. That will get rid of the problem. DON'T soak it in kerosene or some other short cut to cleaning. The old stuff has got to come off the spring. Ken Danckaert On Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM, Ron L'Herault lherault at bu.edu wrote: OK, gang, it is time to tap into the lists' wisdom. I'm working on an Amberola 30. The hook came unsoldered and the reproducer needed a rebuild. Those two easy repairs (the spring was in the case)completed, I tested the phonograph and found that the speed is a bit erratic. It will sound nice, then slow just a bit then return to speed for a while only to slow again. The carriage moves easily and the horn bobbles and rotates as it should. The governor is lubricated and the pad has been oiled. There is no evidence of crud or damage to the governor disk. There were a few teeth on the large hear that had a bit of damage but a bit of judicious filing has cured the noise the damage created, and besides, the speed variation is more random than the cycle of the gear noise. I'm thinking that the mainspring may need to be removed, cleaned and re-lubricated but I thought I might see if there is anything else I missed before tearing it apart. Another word on passwords. Don't use a name spelled backward. The dictionary attacks will find those too. A word in another language is also no good. I complained and they said my case is closed and that they would make there best effort to refund my money. I then went to the bank and canciled the payment to paypal. I got a call from a colection agency and I sent email from paypal to the agency from paypal saying that I won the case but there was no guarantee because the seller had no money in their account. Since you appear to be such an expertl, I refer you to the pictures of the badly demolished Columbia AS. That will show you the Injured parties side and the packing of the machine as received. You tell me who is he said and she said! Rich wrote: I consider these eBay, PayPal, common carrier, or whoever boned me stories to be little more than one sided urban legends and of little merit. These stories belong on the Art Bell program. On Wed, 14 Feb 2007 09:57:25 -0500, Ken Danckaert wrote: Don't rely too much on PayPal. [Phono-L] Ken D's restoration
Thanks to all for the nice comments. We are all part of a wonderful hobby and our interests are as varied as the machines and music that we all enjoy. Thank goodness that we all enjoy different aspects of it because it will ensure that a broad range of items will be saved for the future. Myself, I enjoy the mechanics and the ingenuity of the early inventors. I also enjoy different music types from different times. Someone posted that you would not put this kind of effort into an Amberola 30. I don?t agree. If it was the first machine I ever bought or had some other sentimental value, I would go to extremes to make it right. I might not try to piece together a badly broken lid when there is a ready supply of other lids around but I would bring it back to life. You don?t have much choice on the rare machines. There are not many spare parts around for them. A good friend once told me that I can?t save every phonograph when he saw what I did to restore machines that came in for repair. I always assume that they are someone else?s treasure and have meaning for them. My time spent on them always far exceeds the monetary cost to them. I can?t save them all but I have saved a lot of them and, God willing, I?ll save a lot in the future. Between my efforts and similar efforts by a lot of other like you, these machines will out live us. Tim and George have provided a wonderful service to all of us with their books. Allen K. has made literature and patent information available. Others, too many to mention, have preserved other aspects of phonograph related information. There is a wealth of information out there that has not been made available to us as a whole. It would be great if there was a repository on line where we could place documents for others to read. One such document is one that I have from the Franklin Institute that certifies Berliner as the inventor of the Gramophone. It describes in detail how he made his records and the machines necessary to play them back. Many would enjoy reading something like this if there was a repository to get it from. Maybe one of you can create one. Any takers? Ken Danckaert
[Phono-L] Columbia AS reborn
Awhile back one of the members posted some pictures of a Columbia AS that had been demolished in shipping due to virtually no packing in the box when shipped. The first two URLs show the machine as it was received from the Post Office. Most people would have given up at that point. It was given to me for restoration. Restoration did not include any repainting or refinishing. There were a number of coin mechanism parts that were missing and had to be made. The top casting that was damaged beyond hope was replaced with another one of the same vintage. As you can see, the signboard is new and I am currently working to match the stains for appropriate color. I thought that you would like to see that even what appears to be a hopeless machine can be brought back to life. The URLs show the before and after for this very nice machine. [Phono-L] Protected Bidding on ebay!
It seems to me that it will not do much good to discuss this only on Phono-L. You all need to state your displeasure to Ebay itself. That is not an easy task since Ebay makes it very difficult to send something directly to them. If anyone knows a good way to send them your comments please share it with the rest of us. I have commented on the new policy on one of the chat boards but there is no way to know if Ebay pays much attention to that. I make heavy use of the bidder info to protect myself as both a buyer and seller. Ebay has shown themselves to be incapable of protecting the buyers and sellers from the abuses that have been discussed here. I believe the policy is purely profit based and they could care less about the rest of us. Unless they can guarantee protection to buyers and sellers from the abuses that are rampent on Ebay, then they should not remove about the only way we have to protect ourselves. Ken Walt wrote: Rich, This concern may have been best addressed by Michael (Funk) last evening. He wrote in part: check out some of the ebay discussions boards on this subject. Those boards, despite some of the irrational and subjective peanut-gallery noisemakers you will see, are the best place to find others who, probably like me, you, and so many other genuinely responsible and decent folks in Phono-L, really do have a focused and genuine concern for how these changes affect eBay users in general. Now...If eBay were to implement a truly democratic process rather than a dictatorship, I would vote for Loran Hughes to be president. Hey...Maybe that would be a good fundraiser for the coming years: A bumper sticker that reads, Loran Hughes is MY President. But in the meantime, don't forget what Inspector Harry Callahan (a.k.a Clint Eastwood - one of the guys who used to be on the bumper sticker that we are going to put Loran on) said in the 1973 movie, Magnum Force: A man's got to know his limitations. [Phono-L] Protected Bidding on ebay!
I have seen a number of instances where I was able to determine a shill bidder (in this case I'll call them a ftiend of the seller) where they are bidding on items fron a particular seller. It usually has nothing to do with the category of the item. In won auction they are bidding on a phonograph item, in another they are bidding onb an expensive doll, in another they are bidding on a gernerator -- all from the same seller. The odds of this kind of interaction is extremely high. I do this by researching the high several bidders in an auction that I'm interested in. This is valuable to me indetermining whether to bid on a particular auction or on auctions from a particular seller. If someone is using a friend to up the bids on there items, chances are they will not be on the same server and will not have the same IP. Seeing these relationships lets me sort these people out. Another use that I use that information for is to track bidders that have similar interests to me. I can track items they are bidding on. If they have found something that I also want, I'll bid on it. Some may not like this , but it is an auction and everything is open to everyone equally. In other cases seeing shat other bidders are bidding on might lead me to a seller that lists items in a manner that I would not have found it. [Phono-L] Phono L could be great...
I was glad to see all the response to my posting. Don't get me wrong, I was not criticizing Loren on how she keeps this going. I know it is a LOT of work. I'm used to a lot of personal involvement with other collectors. I know them personally, have seen many their collections and know their needs and help when I can. I have been collecting since 1970 but still know relatively few collectors well. My comment about good old boys (didn't mean to make it gender specific) was not meant in a negative manner. What I meant was that a lot of you seemed to know each other quite well. You know what each other collects and their interests. Loran indicates that many sign on with first names and that is fine and eventually I'll get to know you all. Maybe I'm in too much of a hurry. That said, it would still be nice to know more about individuals. Most phono people that I have met are pretty nice people. I'm just anxious to know more. I tried to get on the other list a couple of times and never heard from them so I have written it off. Just entering the group it is difficult to know what has been discussed in the past. I know there is the achive but that is a lot to go through so I will undoubtedly bring up old topics in posts. Anyway, I'm glad to be here. My two finger typing will limit my posts. This is already long for me. Someone asked about more info on me. Well, I'm Ken Danckaert and live near Annapolis Maryland. My collection is mainly outside horn machines and music boxes (limited by space available). Among the more interesting machines are a Rosenfield, Edison A450, Miraphone, Edison Excelsior, Columbia Coin N, Columbia S, Edison Standard Polyphone, Columbia SG, Edison Eclipse, and a bunch of 1901 vintage outside horn machines. I do a lot of restoration work at a turtles pace. I'm currently working on two Edison Eclipses, three square cased Multiphones, two Coin Ns, and a couple of music boxes. I do my own machining, casting and small part nickel plating. Feel free to visit. This is already too long. Have a nice day. Ken Danckaert Severna Park, MD
[Phono-L] packing a horn
Allen has a good idea with the round shipping barrel. Another option is round cement forms that are available at building supply places. Some stores will cut it and let you buy only what you need. They come in different diameters and the length can be cut to suit your horn. You will need to cut a wood disc for both ends. These can be screwed on to the tubes.
