[Phono-L] Chat

2006-12-24 Thread Ron L'Herault
Just a reminder the chat is up and running: However, as Loran said:

Be aware that Microsoft no longer supplies a Java runtime with Windows
XP. You have to download and install yourself. First, check your
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and check to see if you have Java
installed. If not, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html and
click on the first download link in the JRE column.

It took me about 13 min to download on a 56 K dialup. Installation was
automatic and quick.

Same here, Tom - though I only tried once, and got a blue screen fatal
error. That was enough for me to not come back until the bugs are worked
out. I'm still trying to get the rest of my Windows XP to work correctly.

I will definitely try again. It's a great service that Loran is providing.

I have the security settings pretty high on my computer to keep viruses and

[Phono-L] Chat

2006-12-24 Thread Thomas Jordan
Ron,
I am running MS windows XP home. Here's what I did:
I went to control panel/Internet options/Security and then clicked on custom.
Scroll down until you see the two sections pertaining to Java settings. It's
up to you what level of security for Java that you want to select (I.E. High,
medium or low).

Loran,
I am obviously a bit paranoid about spyware. I am running Ad-aware, Microsoft
AntiSpyware, Spyware Blaster, and Spyware doctor. Along with that I am running
Norton Anti-virus corporate edition.

Could any of these apps be working against me for successful chat??

How can you tell if you have got it turned on? There are tons of things
on the download page what do we need for the chat? I went to the chat
page just now and did not get the log on page.

You'll be happy to know that I upgraded the chat software last night
after the chat ended. All you need to do is make sure you have Java
installed (free from www.sun.com<http://www.sun.com/>) and turned on. Happy
chatting!

  Loran

The chat was great on Saturday. I had no problems at all. Just log on to
Oldcrank.com. That will bring you to Loran's web site. Then click on "Forum"
and you will be there.
It's good to "see" new people on the chat!

Holy cow, Tom! It's much easier just to buy a Mac ;) Seriously, the
chat is simply a java application; your spyware and antivirus software
shouldn't have any effect on it.

Be aware that Microsoft no longer supplies a Java runtime with Windows
XP. You have to download and install yourself. First, check your
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and check to see if you have Java
installed. If not, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html and
click on the first download link in the JRE column.

here's a very easy and economical way to avoid spyware and viruses:

http://www.apple.com/macmini/

you can use your existing mouse, display and keyboard, so the cost is
only a little more than the various protective software things you
would otherwise need.

[Phono-L] Chat

2006-12-24 Thread diamondisk...@aol.com
Tom:

I keep my security settings set relatively high, and I was able to get in
the chat room. You should try to resolve the issue, because the few of us who
were there had a nice time talking. (At least I did!)

I think you may be reaching the point of confusing your machine by having
all of those security programs. I run McAfee antivirus software, and a McAfee
firewall, both of which are offered by AOL, at no extra charge to their
customers. AOL also includes antispyware with their service. I know a lot of
people
consider AOL to be outdated, but they are death on spam, and do a great job
of weeding out viruses. I also use Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster.

I have played around with a lot of spyware programs. I haven't tried all of
them, but it has been my experience that if Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster don't
stop something, the other programs probably won't either. If they do catch
something those two programs miss, it is probably something relatively
innocuous.

I know we have to be careful, with identity theft, and access to personal
information becoming more of a problem every day, but don't let that ruin your
online experience. Pick a couple of good programs, run them and update them
regularly, and you should be okay.

One tip; I no longer use credit cards, or personal checks when I buy things
online, I use USPS money orders, because I don't want anyone knowing my
banking information. I don't want anyone seeing how little is actually there!.

Randy
