Hats off to Mr Edison for his "Let Us not Forget" recording.
We shall not. My thanks to all the Veterans on the list.

Re: [Phono-L] Veteran's Day and Armistice Day

2015-11-11 Thread Peter Fraser via Phono-L
My Scottish grandmother was 16 years old on November 11, 1918. She's gone now,
but lived into her 90s.

Years ago, she described how it went through the tenements of Glasgow when the
news came. Of course there was no radio and very few telephones, so people
shouted from windows and roof tops and the news spread up and down the streets
across blocks until the entire city was alerted, and everyone flooded into the
streets and shouted and danced.

And then, as she was describing the scene to me, her face darkened a little
bit. She said "everyone except John Sutherland's grandmother, who was a
communist, and hung her red tablecloth out the window. So we threw stones at
her!"

And then she said, every family lost at least one boy, and a few tears came.
Terrible war.

I drive around with one on the stem of my car's windshield rear view mirror.
Sadly, they are no longer handed out on the streets of San Francisco.

That's very troubling to me.

My grandfather's brother, Eugene Pendleton Carver, was C-in-C of the VFW in the
20s, having served with Pershing in Mexico and France.

Imagine how it would be if we decided to send a force into Mexico today!

Does anyone know of any records celebrating the end of the Great War in song or
otherwise? Other than LUNF of course.
