The documentation should be updated to reflect use of the libdir argument with relative paths or path fragments. Having consulted many supposed expert php developers, who have all told me the configure script is broken in this way (one having given me the patch as a solution), it seems the documentation needs to be clarified on this point. There is no way to override this behavior on the configure command line. This error is 100% reproducible in FC4 - FC6 on x86_64 hardware. The solution is a one line fix in the configure script. More properly it should probably be applied to whatever m4 macro is used to construct the script, but that doesn't seem to be available in the snapshot.
