You need the FreeTDS connection library (it works wonders for us):
Goto www.freetds.org
Download it
Configure, make, make install it
Edit your freetds config file to your needs
Add the --with-sybase=/path/to/freetds to your PHP configure line
yes, I know that says sybase, but trust me, it works.
