Re: [PHP] Re: Reaching the PHP mailing list owners

2012-10-12 Thread Helmut Tessarek
Hello Daniel,

I wanted to get an answer to my question (which you would have seen, if you
actually had read the mail).

I got a mail that messages bounced from my mail server. So I sent a reply to
the list owner to get an explanation how this is possible, since my mail
server only rejects mails which are flagged by the clamav milter (and this did
not happen). But then, instead of an answer, I got an automated response,
which basically means only one thing: I don't give a damn about your problems
and buzz off. Mailing list owners are supposed to be real people, not bots.

I'm sorry, I was really irritated by this automated respone. It is not very
professional sending people to go in circles.

Cheers,
 Helmut

Re: [PHP] Re: Reaching the PHP mailing list owners

2012-10-12 Thread Helmut Tessarek
Hello Daniel,

 I briefly glanced, and no more, because anyone with any idea of
 Internet etiquette knows not to forward an entire bunch of junk to a
 public and wholly-unrelated mailing list. Had you considered the
 appropriate options, such as reading about how to contact us, you'd
 have gotten a response. Note that the tone of your reply here has
 already changed the tenor of this entire discussion now.

Hmm, that's funny. I sent the mail to the addresses which were listed in the
replies I got. The first mail suggested to use the ml owner, which I did. Then
I got another reply which said the following:

---
This is an automated response to your message to internals-ow...@lists.php.net

If you are trying to post to one of the PHP mailing lists, the correct
address looks something like php-general@lists.php.net.

If you are having problems unsubscribing, follow the directions
located online at http://php.net/unsub
---

So the only address that actually seemed to be working was
php-general@lists.php.net

How do you expect me to investigate how to contact the mailing list owners
other than reading the mails I get from the mailing list.

You wrote that 'anyone with any idea of Internet etiquette knows not to
forward an entire bunch of junk to a public and wholly-unrelated mailing list'.
You know, you could also say the following:

Anyone with any idea of Internet etiquette knows that if you send an automated
reply, you also include a correct address to which you can reply to.

Using only addresses that return additional canned responses is against the
Internet etiquette.

It is not my fault that the only address that worked was a totally unrelated
public mailing list.

 And, for the most part, we are (save for a few sentient androids).
  However, go to news.php.net and look at those bounce messages. Note
 it's all consecutive, within a relatively small window of time. Then,
 using your own suggestion about reading the email, look at the bounce
 response: the messages were undeliverable up to a time threshold, when
 the server gave up. Sounds like there was an issue connecting to your
 SMTP system during that window. If you have the appropriate access,
 you might want to review your mail logs during this window.

Ok. This makes sense since the mail server was down for several days due to a
HW problem.
But this is something which can happen and I find it rather concerning getting
an email which states that I might be removed w/o further notice.
If the system knows that mails were undeliverable during a certain period,
then there is no reason for sending me a warning. If this happens for 14
consecutive days, then it makes sense to send an email.

 Well, as the adage goes, you'll catch more flies with honey than
 with vinegar. And considering this is the very first message I've
 ever seen from you, it sounds like either (a) you didn't follow the
 proper protocol, or (b) there's something in the process we need to
 review. If you think the issue lies on our end, you can submit a bug
 at https://bugs.php.net/ and detail the steps to reproduce the issue.
 If it is indeed something we need to correct, believe me, we will. We
 don't deliberately attempt to mislead or frustrate people, despite how
 it might have seemed.

I was one of the original developers of the native ibm_db2 driver for PHP. I
also subscribed to the internal mailing list at that time, because I wanted to
work on PHP itself. Unfortunately most developers started to be quite
condescending in this list and thus I never really posted anything to that list.

 In Computer Science it is known as:

 Dunno what it would be in English, much less Spanish.

 It really isn't all that different from PHP's array indices, though in
 other languages the differences are magnified between an array element and

 There are also funky things you can do (in PHP, even) to trigger action

 If you Google for Object Oriented and Properties, Slots, Member

Hello All,

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas, there are so many things that can be
over look when working by yourself.

When I asked help for a questionary, in reallity I meant a long form. With
that said I apologize for having some people in mind more like a question
answer type of thing(school test and similar).

So, after reviewing this project I have come out with the final descicion...

In order to fill out a form the user must have an UN and PASS, so that I can
write their answers to the DB as they are filling out the form, reason for
this is in case they have to stop in the middle of the form they can come
back on a later time to finish with their UN and PASS, they should be able
to continue their form or to start all over.

I decided to divide the forms into 5 different sections, and as some one
suggested divide the sections by groups so people can fill out the form and
concentrate in the section they are working on.

Similar to when you have to fill out your taxes online:
https://taxes.hrblock.com/hrblock/login/LoginRegistration.aspx

the difference is that this has been done with ASP (ewww! :) )

Thank you everyone for your input. Any more suggestions are welcome

you can install a kit that would enable you to switch from php4 to 5 and

Or if you have both installations in your computer already im sure you can

information will be written to a db. What is the best way to carry along
through the pages the information that has already been submitted? Cookies?
Writing to a DB after each section? Session Variables?

I read that writing to a database as i go along could be too much of a
hazzle for the db, specially if I have multiple people filling out the form
at the same time.

TIA

[PHP] Wrong result (345php.tmp) instead a filepath from input file type=file...

2002-01-14 Thread helmut ott

I have a page with a html-form headed with
...ENCTYPE=multipart/form-data ...

and multiple inputs,e.g.:
input type=file name=formname1...
If I select a file,e.g. abc.jpg with the path c:\abc.jpg
I get a value like 345php.tmp instead of c:\abc.jpg.

Any idea what is wrong?

[PHP] file downlaod via http

2001-12-10 Thread Helmut Habiger

hi!

is's such a simple question, but ...

i'd like to download a picture.
but instead of typing the URL into my browser, loading the page into the
browser, then right-clicking to to get the save picture as menu, then
entering the local path and press save,
I'd like to write a litte script, where i enter the URL of the picture
(example:http://www.picturesite.com/picture1.jpg;), the local storing
path and all the rest for download is done by the script.

any idea?

thx helmut

[PHP] Apache/PHP URL problem

2001-09-09 Thread Helmut

Just noticed a strange problem with one of my business servers. It's
configured identically (afaik) to all of my other servers (which do not
exhibit this behavior), with Apache 1.3.20 and PHP 4.0.6, running on Linux
Mandrake 7.2.

The problem occurs only when requesting PHP documents. Say, for example, I
have a PHP script at: http://www.example.com/myphpscript.php

For some reason, I can also access this page via:
http://www.example.com/myphpscript

On top of that, I seem to be able to pass a whole bogus path afterwards:
http://www.example.com/myphpscript/blah/blah/blah/and/so/on/etc/

...and the page (myphpscript.php) is still displayed properly.

It's not really a big deal, but I had some prick with too much time on his
hands taking advantage of this, filling my logfiles with thousands of
requests for ~300-character URLs.

This ONLY happens with files with the .php extension (not .html files) so
I'm not sure if it's a problem with my Apache config, my PHP config, or
what... Anyone have any clues? I've been through both the Apache and PHP
docs a few times over, but can't seem to find anything relevant.

Compiled Apache with:
--prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=ssl --enable-module=so --enable-m
odule=log_agent --enable-module=log_referer --enable-module=proxy --enable-m
odule=rewrite --enable-module=speling --enable-module=usertrack --enable-mod
ule=vhost_alias

And PHP with:
--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --enable-versioning --with-mysql=/usr
/local/mysql --enable-track-vars

Any help would be appreciated!

Helmut

[PHP] Can PHP top limited Windows Explorer? (Visual not filelistlike Image selectiosn for upload forms)

2001-05-10 Thread Helmut Ott

Are there any visual Image select solutions for upload forms topping the limited
Windows Explorer?

If you have an input type=file the explorer opens and gives you a list of files in
the directory. Thats nice exept u need to select a specific image from a larger number
of image files.

Is there any way to get a SELECTABLE list of images shown in a PHP replacement of
Windows Explorer?

Really curious...

Helmut

[PHP] GD installed but imageFUNCTIONS dont work

2001-02-27 Thread Helmut Ott

Hi,
hopefully somebody can help to solve this miracle.

My phpinfo

My provider (and phpinfo) says GD =1.62 is installed.
But when I run scripts using the php-imagefunctions
that require gd like
?php
Header ("Content-type: image/jpeg");
$im = imagecreate (400, 30);
$black = ImageColorAllocate ($im, 0, 0, 0);
$white = ImageColorAllocate ($im, 255, 255, 255);
ImageTTFText ($im, 20, 0, 10, 20, $white, "/path/arial.ttf",
  "Testing... Omega: #937;");
ImageJPEG ($im);
ImageDestroy ($im);
?
The lines containing the functions like createImage(), or ImagecolorAllocate() return
error messages.
How can I find out without doubt whether the functions work properly or not?
Every advice is appreciated.

Helmut
