[PHP] undefined function: ftp_connect()

I've compiled php 4.0.6 on Darwin as CGI. "--with-ftp" shows up in the php
configuration display but I still get this message:

undefined function: ftp_connect()

I've read a couple past articles with people having this problem but I did
not spot a solution.

Any suggestions?
