YahooGroups hosts at least 2 (regional) PHP mailing lists that I know of.

Both happen to be Chicago-based. (as am I)

One gets virtually no traffic.

The other has migrated to SourceForge for all intents and purposes,
but the YahooGroups list remains as a doorway out of darkness for
those who stumble into it.

So not only does searching for a message within a YahooGroup suck (and
it really really really sucks) but apparently searching for a Group
also sucks. :-)

PS
I really don't understand how a filter and a separate folder can
"clutter" up an email client... Surely your email client HAS
filters/folders...

Wow, go away for a few days and holy war breaks out...cool!

Why not one system that supports both without extra work? The model I'm
thinking of is Google or Yahoo groups(*). You can access any 'forum'
via a web browser, search, post, reply, etc AND/OR you can subscribe to
any forum and get messages sent to you via email (individual or digest
format).

At work, I sit behind a firewall and web access involves a multi-stop
PITA process so listerservers work well for me there. At home, forum
access is easier since I can go to the forum site, decide what I want to
read and/or respond to without cluttering up my email client.

(*) - I am NOT suggesting this forum be configured like Yahoo, the
search function absolutely sucks and I'm not a real fan of the layout,
but the concept of a forum that's a list that's a forum...is what I
like. For what it's worth, Yahoo has not PHP groups I can find but
there are 33 over at Google with 100 - 1000 members.

Since when is a forum more efficent than this newsgroup, forums tend to
be more images/content and require more maintainance, this newsgroup is
perfect for me and many other people I imagine.

I've monitored this list long enough to predict the most probable
replies to this message. To save everybody some time, I will ansver them
here, without waiting someone to key them in.

Reply: There are forums on zend.com.
My Reply: zend.com != php.com.

lol, too right, php.com is nothing to do with PHP or zend.com is nothing
to do with php.com :-)

R: There is a web interface for this mailing list.
MR: You cant' post new messages there, and it's just another way of
showing emails anyway.

R: There is a newsgroup interface.
MR: Yeah, I'm using it right now. But it requires special software, and
is terribly slow, unless you have very good connection and moderately
powerful PC.

Most desktop systems come with an email client as standard so what
special software is required!

R: Forums suck, mailing lists rule.
MR: Not if you don't like receiving 200 messages + spam every day.

If you bother to look when suscribing you would notice two choices,

1. Digest
2. Normal
The first being the one where you get emails, the second is for those
who just open their mail client at their own leisure,

R: Synchronizing mail lists and forums is very difficult and nobody will
do it.

MR: There is no need to synchronize anything.

I wonder why you use the term distaste i don't think that is why there is
no mesage boards around.

I believe you've answer your own question later in this email with your
question:

R: Synchronizing mail lists and forums is very difficult and nobody
   will do it.

You only (incorrectly) answer the first part of the question but never
address the second part.

So what is the point of the sending your message?

It wasn't designed for an interface to reply to, hence the read only
factor.

Special software? Outlook, Thunderbird, mutt. yes the news server is
slow.

The question isn't about forums sucking, i tend to belong to several
mailing lists and have them all go in my proper folders or (gmail) labels.

I wouldn't say that it is difficult, it is a matter of anyone doing it.
I'm half way at the point to enable posting via the web (see sig), but i
don't think i will even go that route.

At this point it sounds like you just want to get rid of the current ways
of discussing topics and just use a web forum.

It just comes down to it that the mailing list system isn't going to go
away anytime soon nor is the news server. so someone will just have to
take the time and write some sort of web forum like application.

Besides, because php is a web development tool it doesn't mean that
everything that php.net does has to be written in php. I hope you don't
suggest to have a web only cvs interface to commit code.

Curt.
