Quite a few, there are 3641 messages in the php-general archive for between 02-01-02 and 03-01-02 this month there are already 3147 messages. If you are concerned about transfer you could use a news client and connect to news.php.net, the news groups are interfaces to the mailing lists that way you don't have to download messages you dont want to read.
