charset which is not very comfortable for some of the users,
specially I know that A LOT of russians using Opera brawser older
versions of which do not support koi-8 Any one knows how to
convert koi-8 results of MySQL to win1251?

Thank you, you alredy helped me a lot,

RE: [PHP] charset

2001-08-20 Thread Lawrence . Sheed

Depends on what Chinese charset you want.

Simplified Chinese or Traditional.

GB or BIG5

Use a meta content type for the charset type

for simplified

for traditional

eg

Yahoo! China - NA?¢FOD1u

¦n¤F??

Lawrence.

It depends. What charset is your data in?
If you DB's data is already in koi-8r, ther only thing you can do at the
database level is to use a query:
SET CHARACTER SET koi8_cp1251
and then execute your queries.
All the data will be converted to win1251 codepage on the fly.
Alternately, you can place all the data to the database in 1251
charset, and then compile mysqld with option
--with-charset=cp1251 (used in ./configure)
Then you'll have all the data returned in cp1251, and mysql will sort
all the text data using that charset. To have the data returned in
koi-8 in this case you'll have to issue a query
SET CHARACTER SET cp1251_koi8

By the way, there's not so many russians, if any, using the old Opera browsers
:)

Hi Maxim,

You are probably only one in this mailing list with experiance of
work with russian language in PHP, I have another qwestion
concerning Opera and textarea - I can't make Opera to accept
cyrillic text in textareas, I mean I can type in Russian but can't
insert russian text (tried various formats) into textarea in Opera. I
have Russian Opera 5.12 and russificated Windows ME in settings
of Opera all fonts are cyrillic, I have already 4 years experianse of
working with Opera but actually never knew that it has such
problem =(( I'm mostly worried about visitours of my site who use
Opera, they will not be able to save data in database because they
will have this prob with textarea. By the way texarea is working
wonderfully with IE. and I tried to add different charsets and lang
variables to textarea HTML-tag didn't work any way.

[PHP] Charset/language request headers

2002-07-06 Thread Alberto Serra

ðÒÉ×ÅÔ!

I am not too familiar with the way language and charset requests are
coupled by browsers. After processing the headers I get this two arrays
(based on my personal Mozilla settings).

charset  -> Array ( [0] => KOI8-R [1] => utf-8 [2] => * )
language -> Array ( [0] => ru [1] => en [2] => fr [3] => it [4] => es )

All of charset requests appear to be related to russian only, while no
indication at all is given on how to print out alternate languages.

Which seems to imply that we have no data about which charset should be
used to present english or french/italian/spanish text and therefore we
must maintain some proprietary associative table on our own.

Is that right or the alternate charachter sets are actually buried
somewhere and it's just me being too ignorant to find them? I suspect I
am right, because multilinguistic sites tend to show special chars as
out of context cyrillic charachters on my browser... Which *is* pretty
stupid. :(

I'm sorry, but I haven't much experience with Opera browsers. If you
read Russian, try to search cooler.emax.ru - there were a lot of
articles concerning Opera and its russificarion.

[PHP] Charset/language request headers. Yes, it's true :(

2002-07-06 Thread Alberto Serra

ðÒÉ×ÅÔ!

Doing multiligual sites presumes you can somehow understand what the
client expects from you. Browsers all are full of language settings,
but... The HTTP specification is very little language negotiation
oriented in itself (this is probably a consequence of its having started
out in a 100% english speaking environment).

I have been checking the docs here and there, but that's the way it is.
If russian was my second choice there would be no way to decide
whether I should be sent a KOI-8 doc or its cp-1251 equivalent. And
although I am not a chinese speaker I do suspect the same problem to
arise there. Now I finally understood what was the need for a russian
edition of Apache.

You can check some docs here: http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/http.html
it's a pretty handy site.

All language negotiation specification ignores the charset issue. It
appears as if the two things had been projected separetely, by people
that simply did not know about each other. And since people speaking
more than one language are a minority I would expect this issue to
remain "as is" for a century or so...
