Nothing is simple.

Have your client put up a billboard site stating what he wants to
sell; with an email link to submit offers; and tell the people when
he receives an offer that meets his requirement the item will be sold.

If you want to get "tricky" about it so that a live auction ensues,
then things get complicated.

I have one site where the terms of the auction is that the auction
doesn't end until two hours after that last bid -- it works for them.

Unless he bought the Sears Tower or something, he'd be better off just
using eBay or a similar site and linking to it than running his own
auction...

Though I guess you could whip up a page in about 5 minutes for
somebody's contact info and a "bid" and only allow bids larger than
the current max.

Then you'd only have to run backwards in a phone call through all the
bogus bids to get back to the one who's for real and can cough up the
earnest money.

Please include the list in replies.

Well, if it goes through ebay don't you have to give them a percentage?

Correct, that's usually what happens when someone provides you with a
service.

Also, he just wanted it on his site and not on ebay?

But bear in mind that you'll need to put stuff in place to cover all the
legal issues raised by online auctions. The reason I recommended eBay is
that they're set up to do this, but it's your funeral.

This wheel is not simply a round object, and it already exists...
