[pinhole-discussion] Jeff Dilcher's photos - questions
Hello: This is an analytical question, not a criticism. On some of Jeff's photos (all very nice, by the way), I see a round central region of brighter...uh, exposure, for lack of a more eloquent term. Some don't have it. Is that vignetting due, or is it the inverse quadratic or cubic diminution of light intensity as a function of distance on a focal plane, as opposed to a curved one like in an oatmeal cannister? Or what else would it be? Thanks Murray
[pinhole-discussion] Thanks VanDyke referrals and Garden City definitely not the one in Michigan!
Thanks for all the referrals to Van Dyke - Kallitype processes. Happy Holidays Murray
[pinhole-discussion] Pinhole Dissertation
FYI, I wrote my NYU doctoral thesis on pinhole photography published in 1998. If you want to order a copy, call ProQuest at 734 761 4700 x7044 (1-800-521-0600) or write to Proquest 300 North Zeeb Road PO Box 1346 AnnArbor, Michigan 48106-4700. Item No.: 9819875; Author: Renee Creager O'Brien; Title: The Post-Romantic Vision of Contemporary Pinhole Photographers. The reproductions are not particularly good but the information may be interesting especially to newcomers to pinhole. Some of the key players in the field are discussed including our very own Leezy on the pinhole online discussion. regards, Renee

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Some New Pictures
I think the main blob of light in the sky really is the sun, and not just flare, and the larger circle of light beneath it is the flare. This picture was really more of a mistake that it came out interesting, rather than a planned effort (like most of my pictures!). The wild diffraction effect from the edges of the pinhole (which has been discussed at great length here in the past...) is a near perfect compositional element in the shot. That's quite an achievement, considering that the effect usually doesn't show up untill AFTER the film is developed! (Or was this done with an SLR where was enough light from the 'lens flare' for it to be visible in the viewfinder??) [pinhole-discussion] First experience cutting 5 extra thin roll film in the dark.
Suffice it to say my first darkroom experience in 20 years was a little traumatic. I laid the spool in the cannister lid as a stand and began pulling and the momentum rolled the spool across the floor, knocking over the container I was going to put a shorter length in. (I was working on the floor on a large sheet of kraft paper luckily). When I got home, I happened to notice the 'refrigerator poetry magnets' that read: I am angry from mad mean film experiment (Karma?) For anyone that doesn't know what refrigerator poetry magnets are - they are a set of flexible sheet magnets with individual words printed on them - they stick to ferrous kitchen appliances and your guests (or elves?) leave weird little compositions when you aren't watching. I survived, but next time I actually have to cut the film straight and make it the right size for film holders. Murray
