Re: [pinhole-discussion] 6x22 pinhole camera coverage?!
The camera is said to have a 60mm focal length. Does anyone have experience with images made that wide, nearly 8.5 inches, from such a focal lenth (at f/360) on 120 film? Are the edges even useful at that extreme? I guess what I'm getting at is this camera a gimmick? Will the user most likey have to crop only the center portion of the neg. for a usable image and not really get the full 22cm effect? What do you think? Thanks, Andrew -- From: Scott Sellers scottsell...@mindspring.com Andrew Amundsen a...@tcinternet.net wrote (snip): My inquiry is regarding how an image would look from such a long neg.? The stated aperture size is f/360. Would the edges suffer from extreme distortion? I'm surprised that the coverage would even fill that length of 22cm!? Anyone care to enlighten us with some expertise? The main factor when considering coverage is focal length. To get an idea of how a particular FL will cover various formats, you could make say an 8x10 a camera of the same focal length, shoot some images, then mask off the negative size you are considering, be it 6x6, 6x9, 6x22, 4x5, 5x7, etc. cheers, Scott
[pinhole-discussion] 6x22 pinhole camera coverage?!
(I apologize in advance to Zernike Au for bringing up the product of an English company, which I understand may have infringed on copyrights to the Zero Image's beautiful, original hand made wooden 120 series of pinhole cameras.) In the latest 'Amateur Photographer' magazine(UK) 8 March 2003, there is a small anouncement of a new 'Silver vista' pinhole camera (pg.5) which produces a 6x22cm negative, 3 images per 120 roll! My inquiry is regarding how an image would look from such a long neg.? The stated aperture size is f/360. Would the edges suffer from extreme distortion? [pinhole-discussion] The Epson Perfection 3200!
It never fails: ask for help on a question, two minutes later find the answer first! It's called the Epson Perfection 3200, and it was talked about on the big...@topica.com list forum, not here after all. Anyway I thought since I brought it up, here's what was said: http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/Epson_flatbeds.html Dunno if anyone here has been considering buying an Epson 2450 but you might wanna hold off for a month or so for the Perfection 3200 which is due in January. This press release just appeared on the Epson german site (google translation). I have the 1640 SU which is fine for 4x5 but less than marginal for MF. However, even taking into account the usual Epson pixel inflation, I would imagine the 3200 would do a reasonable job of MF up to at least 16x16. 2540 owners might like to comment. It looks as though the price point will be around 490 euros. Expect the 2540 price to drop accordingly (it's already marked as end-of-life and being discounted by retailers). [pinhole-discussion] The next Epson scanner after the 2450?
I've been trying to remember and searching the archive for, a reference made not long ago here, about a new Epson flat-bed scanner to hit the market soon. What was it called the Epson 3200? or 4800? It was said to be of higher res. than the current 2450. Who brought that up, because I want to review that info again for a possible future purchase of a flat-bed film scanner for Med./large format negs. Thanks for the help, Andrew Amundsen
Re: [pinhole-discussion] Still Life Compositions
Mark may actually be refering to a 25mm equivalent in 35mm terms. I know the dual focal length (4x5) pinhole camera I purchased lists it's focal lengths in 35mm terms: a super wide 12mm and wide 25mm. Sincerly, Andrew Amundsen Mike Healy wrote: I need to ask you a dumb question. You are able to get 25 mm of focal length on 4x5? What equipment are you employing, that you can do this? That's a separation of 1 lousy inch from pinhole to film plane, isn't it? I'd love to try that myself. My monorail and bag bellows **AND** recessed lens board allow me a fat, gross, long-length 50 mm. What is your trick? Okay, another dumb question. With that kind of coverage on tabletop, it kind of seems like you're going to get the doorway behind you in the image, plus six miles down the length of the hallway, to say nothing of your own entire carcass. So I'm kind of wondering, why are you working with 25 mm? That it distorts, would be one good reason. But you'll get distortion with 40-60 mm, won't you? Do you have to stick to 25 mm? If I didn't like it that I was getting so much into the frame, that probably would be my first point of reassessment. Give yourself some bellows. I mean, unless you can position your camera so it's a quarter of an inch from your subject matter. I tried that recently w/ table top myself. The camera actually cast a shadow onto my subject. My issue is that I am trying to limit the elements in my composition, but tend to pick up a significant amount of the surrounding area no mater how close I am to the still life composition. Is it possible to limit the surrounding area? I've seen other pinhole still lifes with a limited composition--perhaps this was accomplished in the darkroom?

Very nice! (You may have sold me on trying some Holga work). It fits just fine in with pinhole, congratulations James! Sincerly, Andrew Amundsen From: James Kellar pinh...@jameskellar.com I just got word that I had 2 images accepted in a show at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute Indiana. I guess the only bad thing is that while I entered 3 images, 1 a pinhole and the other 2 were holga's. The pinhole did not get excepted. I know it's not to cool to announce this on the pinhole list, but I'm excited and this is a pretty important show for southern Indiana. Re: [pinhole-discussion] Re: The Great Wall Project
Fantastic work! This should inspire us to get back to work with our pinhole cameras. I've noticed an extreme calm in the 'lake', we need more people to toss in some stones to cause the ripples to flow again (O.K. maybe TOO deep!). How about a monthy group project for all list members. Someone could suggest a theme every beginning of the month for us to work on, then post our results at the end of the month. Anyone like this idea? A 'Pinhole-Salon'? I'll suggest Zernike give us the first theme. How about it?! Re: [pinhole-discussion] 3-hole 4x5 pinhole cameras?
From: Chris Peregoy pere...@umbc.edu What do you mean by three hole camera. I've made two hole stereo cameras and a none hole multiple exposure 4x5 but I don't know of any three hole, comercially availavle cameras. Sorry for any confussion. I mean a multiple hole camera, all three pinholes expose on the same sheet of film simultaneously. One pinhole front and parallel to film plane, two pinholes on either side at slight angles to film plane. The exposures overlap in fascinating ways. I've seen very interesting results from such multiple simultaneous exposure pinhole cameras. Anybody know what I'm trying to describe? Thanks, Andrew

I didn't quite get your explannation on how to do it but a pinhole scanner may be done with a big pinhole box fixed around the scanner, being the glass working in place of paper or film. I'll do it then show. Sorry everyone, but this sounds NUTTY! How would you 'expose' for a long enough period of time related to a pinhole exposure?!
