I have already been getting some great pinhole cards from the swap. A few of
them look like they have been printed at a photo lab--the paper doesn't look

need to print my photos for the swap and wondered how these people did it.
They look so nice!

[pinhole-discussion] scanning negs question

2003-11-10 Thread Traci Bunkers
I am scanning some negatives right now and have noticed something that I
haven't noticed before. . .

When I do a quick scan at 100 dpi at 300%, it is sharper than scanning the
same negative at 300dpi at 420%. Does anyone know why? I think it looks
better (on my computer screen anyway) at the lower resolution. I haven't
tried printing anything to see if there is a visible difference.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] What is the best scanner?

2003-07-23 Thread Traci Bunkers
Yes, but the guides don't always work--like with 35mm pinhole pictures where
the image extends into the sprocket holes and you want to scan the whole
thing. Or when running 35mm film through a medium format camera (same issue
with sprocket holes). In both those instances, I tried putting the film into
one of the bigger guides, but the film dips down and touches the glass.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Re: Need Polaroid Pinhole help for 600 camera

2003-07-16 Thread Traci Bunkers
Thanks John,
I've actually been to that site--but the kind of SX-70 camera I was
dismantling was an all plastic one.

But, Since I last posted, I have had success. . . and failure. I figured out
to make the picture bigger, I actually had to shorten the focal length
rather than extend it. I'm guessing this has something to do with the
internal mirrors since the film is horizontal on the bottom of the camera.
Once I figured that out, I was able to pry open my plastic one-step sx-70
camera, remove the lens and put on a pinhole and use 600 film in it. Since
the camera is made for a slower film, the exposure worked fine with 600
film. I got some great pictures. . .then the camera crapped out. It smelled
and sounded like the motor died.

So I grabbed another sx-70 camera and did the same. This one was trickier
because it used sonar to focus. So it was harder to get the front off and
remove the lens. Got it working, and each time I took a picture, the picture
was in a different place. I found out something had happened to the shutter
leaves and they were moving around. . . . And I think it would be almost
impossible to fix this myself (thrift-store find, so no great loss).

So, back to the 600 camera I put on a smaller pinhole and shortened the
focal length and got some interesting photos. But, I had to use a fairly
large pinhole to get the right exposure, and the photos are blurry. But in a
kind of cool way. I think I've got the smallest pinhole on it that will give
me the right exposure. The great thing about this camera is it has a built
in flash. So I can do pinhole photos with a flash in lower light.

I would post thee, but I forgot to bring them to work. . .where I'm avoiding
working. I'll post a link later.

Also, I think I have the "optimum" pinhole on my Super shooter plus
polaroid. I've got sharp pictured with a good exposure, and I don't have to
use a tripod. I'll post those later too.

I have to say, I'm digging polaroid pinholes. There is nothing like
instantly seeing your picture. Needless to say, I've been spending a lot of
money on film.

2003-07-08 Thread Traci Bunkers
Yes, taking the shutter off would be one way. But I'd have to figure out how
to open up the camera without breaking it. I don't want to mess up the
mechanism that makes the film pop out.

Yes, the center is over exposed. I'm wondering if it's because of the flash,
or if light is reflecting off the inside of the pinhole material.

[pinhole-discussion] Need Polaroid Pinhole help for 600 camera

2003-07-08 Thread Traci Bunkers
I loved my first polaroid pinhole so much, I wanted to make one with one of
my 600 polaroid cameras (600 is the kind, not how many I have!). I took of
the lens and put on a pinhole and started doing experiments. I ended up with
a pretty big pinhole, big enough to measure with a ruler and the naked eye,
but I haven't measured it. I tried putting filters over the electric eye,
but it doesn't seem to slow the shutter. The photos I have linked here are
the best, done indoors using the flash on the camera. I tried without the
flash to see if it would keep the shutter open longer, but it doesn't. I
even totally covered they eye with cardboard, but it doesn't change
anything.

Also, the image doesn't cover the whole picture. It's very voyeuristic. And,
you can see I didn't get the pinhole centered.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep the shutter open longer and how
I can make the picture cover more of the photo without making the pinhole
any bigger?

I think past of it would be to use 600 film in an sx-70 camera, since SX-70
film is rated at 125 or 150. But, my sx-70 camera that I would be willing to
take the lens off doesn't seem, like it would be easy to do. It's a
One-step, all plastic. I think I would have to take off the front plastic
piece to get to the lens. But I started gently prying last night, and it
deems like I would break it before it would come off.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Also, back to my experiments with the Super Shooter Plus: I put a small
filter over the electric eye and it worked great. But, I had to use a tripod
(no big deal). Then I made another pinhole that was bigger and tried it. It
worked great without a filter and I could hand-hold the camera. But, there
wasn't much contrast.

[pinhole-discussion] Polaroid Pinhole Success!

2003-07-03 Thread Traci Bunkers
I turned my Polaroid Super Shooter Plus into a pinhole following Mike's
info, and it worked! The first try was too dark. So I took off the pinhole
and made it bigger. I have to have the lightness/darkness setting on the
lightest, but I'm afraid if I make the pinhole any bigger, the images will
be fuzzy. I used 667 film (3000 speed) with the camera set at 75 ASA and
took the photos in full sun. These 2 came out pretty good. The coneflower
picture is actually a little brighter than the scan came out.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Polaroid

2003-07-02 Thread Traci Bunkers
Lisa, I'll paste in some of the info from Mike Vande Bunt posted to the list
in January and also what he e-mailed to me--keep in mind I haven't tried any
of this yet and I don't have the camera in front of me to look at. . .:

I use a zone plate on mine (85mm zone plate made by Guillermo Penate,
camera is a converted "Color Shooter II") and can hand hold it for the
exposures. (I use the original built in automatic exposure system, set
for 80b ASA and get perfectly exposed prints.) With a pinhole in place
of the zone plate the exposures will still be relatively short --
seconds rather than minutes.

* * * * * (this one was in a different e-mail to me when I asked him some
questions)
I think that for pinhole work the film speed selector switch is not
really needed. We are basically lying to the meter by using high speed
film at a low speed meter setting because of our very small lens
opening. The only thing the film speed switch does is move a large
pinhole (technically a "Waterhouse Stop" since it is behind the meter's
lens) in front of the meter sensor. Since we don't want the meter to be
less sensitive, we don't really need the 3000 speed setting.

[pinhole-discussion] Panorama printing question & static

2002-12-31 Thread Traci Bunkers
So, I did some pinhole photos using 2 cans and got some panoramic shots. The
film was too long to put in my neg holder for my scanner. And that brought
up a question. How would I even print this? It wouldn't fit into my heg
holder for my enlarger.. . So it seems laying it on the scanner bed and
scanning it is the only way I could? I had to put a scratched up piece of
plexiglass on top of it to hold it flat. . . .

Here are my pinholes:
The first one is from a tea can (62mm focal length), the other 2 from a
holiday can (87mm focal length)

http://www.bonkersfiber.com/photos/pinhole/teacancemeteryselfportrait.jpg
http://www.bonkersfiber.com/photos/pinhole/bluecancemeteryselfportrait.jpg
http://www.bonkersfiber.com/photos/pinhole/bluecancemetery.jpg

The first one (when enlarged) has a lot of dust and hair in it--this was not
on the negative, but was part of the negative. So, I think the static must
have made the debris cling to the film when I was loading it into my can.
Does anyone else have this problem? What can you do about it? It wasn't as
noticeable in the other 2.

Are you using the cans that 35mm bulk loaded film comes in? Or the black
plastic ones a roll of film comes in?

Re: [pinhole-discussion] swap

2002-12-16 Thread Traci Bunkers
I already signed up for the swap, but have a question--if you randomly
choose names to send them to, couldn't it end up that you send out a bunch
of postcards, and don't get any in return? Or, if you receive a postcard,
are you supposed to send one to that person?

Also, are there any specifications on how it is printed? Can they be good
inkjet prints, or do they need to be "real" prints?

This one doesn't have a theme, does it?

Re: [pinhole-discussion] wondering

2002-12-10 Thread Traci Bunkers
Steven,
I enjoyed your photos on your web site. What type of pinhole camera are you
using for the panoramic shots that have a fish-eye look to them?

I also process my own 120 b/w film, then scan it on my scanner. When I shoot
color, I have the local lab process only and I scan. Otherwise it's too
expensive for me.

I never thought about it being a light leak. Being that it is roundinsh, any
idea where it might be coming from? I'll have to take a look. I modified it
myself and put on a shutter release cable. I had to cut part of where the
lens housing was to fit a brass channel in. I taped it up over that, but
maybe it needs more tape!

[pinhole-discussion] uploaded photo with "thing" in corner

2002-12-03 Thread Traci Bunkers
Thanks for the suggestions so far on my pinhole shots with my Holga. I just
uploaded a photo that shows this weird thing in the bottom right. I said
earlier that it didn't appear in my b/w shots. But I just looked at some
negs, and there are some shots with it. . . .

I like the quirkiness of using a Holga, but it would be good to know what's
causing this and if it's something I can fix.

[pinhole-discussion] need pinhole advice

2002-12-02 Thread Traci Bunkers
I also sent this yesterday, but it didn't make it to the list. .

I uploaded 2 photos to the gallery: traci_bunkers_2_1 & traci_bunkers_1
Near the upper right I get an area that is lighter than the rest of the
pictures. What causes this and how can I fix it?

I took this with a Holga that I modified to be a pinhole with approx F/230.
This was shot on Kodak 160VC. The exposures were approx 4 secs.

Also, in some of my shots (not these), in the bottom right corner I get a
diagonal line that is curved and varies in thickness/shape. Is this a
reflection off of something in the camera? I sprayed the inside with a flat
black paint and "sharpied" the shutter. I haven't noticed this "thing" when
I shoot with black & white film.

Thanks for any advice!

I sent this message yesterday, but it didn't make it to the list.

This might be covered on the site somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I
mistakenly uploaded the same photo twice, and can't find out how to delete
one of them. Anyone know?
