Re: [pinhole-discussion] new images
Hi everybody I have been recieving messages from the discussion group for a while, but I have never added anything until now. I have uploaded two images to the gallery, the adddresses are below. I have never showed my work to anyone before, and I would appreciate some feedback. They are quite small, this is because I have never uploaded anything before and probably did it wrong. These are taken with a 35mm pinhole camera. using XP2 film . they were made using a flash. I have been taking pinhole photos for a year. I have made quite a lot with film, and some larger ones with paper. I am interested in using large format film, so I can make larger prints. [pinhole-discussion] New images and new camera
Hi everybody, I made a new camera. It's of the oatmeal box type but made of a coffee tin can. A description of how I did it can be found in the "Projekte" area of my site (URL at the end of this mail). Click on "Röhrenkamera (Selbstbau)". Sorry, but the site is in German only. Three images made with this camera can be found in my "Galerie". The first one comes right up. Use the left and right buttons for the next two pictures. [pinhole-discussion] new images
I added 5 new pictures to our list upload system. Here are some words on how they wer made and why, with this mix of old and new technologies. The pictures were made with a technical camera, a Linhof. Instead of a plate with a lens a plate with a tube was mounted. A Kodak professional filterholder was mounted on the tube with its three screws. Normally you whould mount it on the lens. Instead of a filter (these filterholders adapt a square sanwich made of nylon in between a gelatin filter can be mounted of about 2 inches square) a pinhole was mounted. On the back of the camera was a Polaroid cassette loaded with 400 ASA b&w film-pack. A three minute exposure was required (trial and error exposure method). The thus obtained positive was scanned and worked on in both Photoshop and Corel Photopaint. These programs have different qualities, the former seems to stem from the photgraphic world, the letter an add-on to a drawing program (this is subjective). An interesting point in this method of working is that from each step one can go forwrd or back. Say that a scan is available, with software techniques the image can be manipulated to a second image. Call the original the parent, a parent can have many children, but every time the artist can turn back to that parent. Call the children the second generation of images, they can also provide the basis for further results. One pinhole can lead to a "family" of images from which the most successfull can be chosen at a certain moment in time. At a later moment in time I will take a file (call it a "paiting" or "aquarel") and work on it in an attempt to obtain other results. The fact that a pinhole lays at he basis of these constructions gives them specific qualities. Long exposure-times and a certain unsharpness are ideal for certain parent. It is not a split second registration, my model will move in the 3 minute exposure and I sometimes don´t want details but say a charcoal sketch to start with. In this method the old techniques mix with the new, each with their own qualities. Let me know what you think of the images and artistic approach.

I'd be interested in hearing about the 6x9 as well. One hesitation I have about the Zero 2000 is that the images are almost _too_ sharp, so sharp they don't have the quality I like about pinhole cameras.

Thanks for the replies. Here are answers to a few questions. Thomas Harvey wrote: > > I have just uploaded a couple of images to my server. Both were > taken with an old Ansco 6x9 folding camera. They're a lot of fun to use. I find that your pictures have much less light fall-off than what I get with mine. I wonder why. Did you do any correction in the printing (like dodging the center part?) Guy Glorieux No corrections of that sort. It's Ilford Delta 100 film; negatives scanned on a flatbed scanner; some overall adjustments in Photoshop. what do you mean : 'ripped out'? (sorry, non-anglophone) I detached the folding front completely (using pliers, screwdriver, and grinding tool), and removed the bellows. There is no going back to a regular camera! Is that a real working sundial? And where is it? Yes, as far as I know it is working. But I've never actually set my watch by it. It is near Union Station in downtown Portland, Oregon. Regards, Tom
RE: [pinhole-discussion] New images
Both are really nice. It always amazes me just how a "sharp" pin hole photo has a certain quality that you just can't get from glass/plastic. thanks andy -Original Message- From: pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ???
