In cases where upstream doesn't supply a man page, several packages
have created their own trivial man page and it is kept in
debian/something.1 or whatever, providing the bare minimum of information.

If we make a more comprehensive man page, we should try to contribute
it upstream so they will keep it in sync

Bug#733996: closure-compiler: Install a useful manpage for ‘closure-compiler’ command

2014-01-04 Thread Ben Finney

That's a familiar position for Debian package maintainers, yes.

I am reporting (with this message) a new bug for the missing
‘closure-compiler(1)’ manpage, per Debian policy §12.1:

Each program, utility, and function should have an associated manual
page included in the same package. It is suggested that all
configuration files also have a manual page included as well. Manual
pages for protocols and other auxiliary things are optional.

If no manual page is available, this is considered as a bug and should
be reported to the Debian Bug Tracking System (the maintainer of the
package is allowed to write this bug report themselves, if they so
desire). Do not close the bug report until a proper man page is
 available.

> I agree that the package should have a manpage if we're going to continue
> to provide the /usr/bin/ symlink.

Right, and I think the ‘/usr/bin/closure-compiler’ command is very much
desirable (to allow using that command without needing to care about the
implementation). So I think adding a manpage is necessary.

> Daniel added this in the -3 upload. If you or Daniel can contribute a

I will work on a suitable manpage and submit it to the bug report for this.

A small package shouldn't be a problem, if the package serves a purpose
distinct from any other package.

Since the binary ‘closure-compiler’ package will have distinct dependencies
from the dependencies of the other binary packages, be in a separate
section of the archive, etc. the small size shouldn't disqualify it from
entry into the archive.

migrating jblas from svn -> git

2014-01-04 Thread tony mancill
Hello Fellow Java Maintainers:

I'd like migrate the jblas packaging repository from pkg-java on svn to
git. Please let me know if you have any concerns, otherwise, I'll
migrate with the next upload, and drop a README in the jblas folder in
the svn repo.

Thank you,
tony

Hi Ben,

There isn't currently a manpage - the documentation I've seen regarding
using it refers to invoking it as a jar file (see [0], and more
generally [1]). Given that all of the upstream documentation is focused
on invoking it as a jar file, I think we're on our here, at least at the
start.

I agree that the package should have a manpage if we're going to
continue to provide the /usr/bin/ symlink. Daniel added this in the -3
upload. If you or Daniel can contribute a manpage, that would be great.

Currently, that manpage would be the only file in the binary package, as
/usr/bin/closure-compiler will remain a symlink to the executable jar,
so it's still going to be a very small package.

Cheers,
tony

Bug#733996: Generate a ‘closure-compiler’ binary package for the compiler program

By placing the parenthetical where I did, it was intended only to apply to
“a manpage for the command”: i.e. every command in ‘/usr/bin/’ needs an
explanatory manpage.

The statement about library packages isn't an implication of the policy.

> So if closure-compiler can be executed it needs a manpage, no matter

Right, which means:

> > No package providing a command should be empty; there needs to be the

Yet the command also needs a manpage. A separate ‘closure-compiler’ package
specifically for that command would also be the right place to have the
command's manpage; hence the binary ‘closure-compiler’ package would not be
empty.

> If that's the case, it still feels a bit odd to me.

There's also the fact that the ‘closure-compiler’ would have quite
different dependencies from ‘libclosure-compiler-java’, so that is also a
good reason to have distinct real binary packages. See Bug#733996.

> If I misunderstood the situation or there are other ideas on how to
> separate a binary and a library package, that's fine for me :)

(I think by “separate a binary and a library package”, you mean “separate
binary packages for a command and a library”. Apologies if I've
misunderstood you.)

I'm not familiar with packaging Java libraries, but I would think it
sufficient to do something like what I've described in Bug#733996. For
example, the ‘debian/control’ would have:

Source: closure-compiler
…

Package: libclosure-compiler-java
Section: java
Suggests: libclosure-compiler-java-doc
Description: JavaScript optimizing compiler — runtime libraries
…

Package: closure-compiler
Section: devel
Depends: default-jre-headless, libclosure-compiler-java
Description: JavaScript optimizing compiler
…

Package: libclosure-compiler-java-doc
Section: doc
Suggests: libclosure-compiler-java
Description: JavaScript optimizing compiler — API documentation
…

The binary ‘closure-compiler’ package would install:

* the ‘/usr/bin/closure-compiler’ command (perhaps a symlink, as now)

* the manpage (not yet written?)

* the ‘README’ file (or some subset the describes running the compiler from
  the command line)

* maybe others

My main point in responding to your message is: the binary
‘closure-compiler’ package will not be empty. It will need to install files
distinct from the ‘libclosure-compiler-java’ package.

That's not my interpretation of Debian Policy, or maybe I
misunderstood you.

12.1.

Each program, utility, and function should have an associated
manual page included in the same package. It is suggested that
all configuration files also have a manual page included as
well. Manual pages for protocols and other auxiliary things are
 optional.

I can't find any reference to "library packages" or similar.

So if closure-compiler can be executed it needs a manpage, no matter
in which (kind) package under which name it is.

> No package providing a command should be empty; there needs to be the
> command, and a manpage, at least. So this objection doesn't seem to apply
> for bug#733996.

My understanding of the idea [0] was that the new closure-compiler
package would only contain a symlink (and a dependency), since that
actual "command" is the same jar as what is in
libclosure-compiler-java [1].

If that's the case, it still feels a bit odd to me.

If I misunderstood the situation or there are other ideas on how to
separate a binary and a library package, that's fine for me :)

Cheers,
gregor

It seems quite appropriate to me. Especially since Lintian (IMO correctly)
warns when a Java library package depends on a JRE package.

> I'll change my own packages to depend on closure-compiler when it exists

That's what I'm hoping for also.

On 31-Dec-2013, gregor herrmann wrote:

That doesn't address:

* a manpage for the command (required by Debian policy), which is
  extraneous for a libary package

* separate API documentation for the library, which is extraneous for a
  command package

* better focussed dependencies: the command package needs a JRE, the
library package should not have that dependency

> Having a de facto empty package doesn't seem very appealing to me.

No package providing a command should be empty; there needs to be the
command, and a manpage, at least. So this objection doesn't seem to apply
for bug#733996.

Hi Ben,

The upload of 20130227+dfsg1-4 Provides "closure-compiler" so at least
it can be installed by this name now.

There is some discussion regarding this topic towards the end of #705565
[0], and as I understand the general consensus, developers aren't that
enthusiastic about an empty binary package. I don't have a strong
opinion one way or the other as to whether being able to find the
package by section outweighs the need to prevent the creation of empty
binary packages. However, given the recent discussion on debian-devel
about trying to avoid and/or collapse small packages into larger
packages, I tend to think that having the Provides is preferred, at
least for now. It also has the benefit of not putting more burden on
the FTP team to view an upload that must go through the NEW queue.

Thanks,
tony

Hi,

Your package "jblas" Build-Depends on ruby1.8, which is an old,
upstream unmaintained version of the Ruby interpreter.
The Debian Ruby team plans to get rid of it soon.

Please change your package to use Ruby 1.9 or 2.0. The "ruby"
metapackage depends on the current default interpreter version.

Thanks,

jenkins REMOVED from testing

2014-01-04 Thread Debian testing watch
FYI: The status of the jenkins source package
in Debian's testing distribution has changed.

  Previous version: 1.509.2+dfsg-2
  Current version: (not in testing)
  Hint:
# 730457,730695

The script that generates this mail tries to extract removal
reasons from comments in the britney hint files. Those comments
were not originally meant to be machine readable, so if the
reason for removing your package seems to be nonsense, it is
probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the
actual hints file before you complain about meaningless removals.
