I don't think so. However, if the code is released under a
certain license, and I contribute a patch, I think it is
implicit that the code is licensed under the same license as the
project.

I believe that to be a false assumption.

I believe common practice in debian has been to trust upstream
when it comes to licensing. We cannot provide a full auditory of
the code's licensing status, not without investing inordinate
amounts of time and effort, and possibly even money.

I agree.

And I see no conflict between this and what I described above.  I
suspect that you do, since you mention it here.  Care to elaborate?

If upstream tells me the work is GFDL'ed, then I have no reason to
believe some parts of it are not GFDL, unless explicitly stated.
What we are doing here is precisely debating whether the manual is
in fact GFDL.

Do upstream state that the complete work is GFDL?  Then let's quote
verbatim that statement.

From PrefaceCopy.html:

This version of the Csound Manual (The Canonical Csound Manual) is
released under the GNU Free Documentation Licence.

Good. Let's include that in debian/copyright.

I suspect, however, that This version of the Csound Manual does not
cover the complete work. You mentioned yourself in the earlier non-DEP5
copyright file that some parts were GPL (or was it LGPL?).

Re: Split of mhwaveedit package

2010-07-01 Thread Alessio Treglia
Hi,

I've been going ahead in splitting the package different way, I was
intended to give users the chance to install both versions.

Anyway, since we are a team and I'm the only one who believes that
would be useful :) there is no problem to me to revert the changes
done and make things back.

I'll ask Luca Falavigna to reject my latest upload, then I'll revert
the git repo in a while.

Cheers.

But how about the approach to build against libtwolame (for MP2

Perhaps general encoding done via ffmpeg can be supported, for cases where
recording via vp8/theora+vorbis is desired.

I believe this was already supported? So currently mythtv is build
against ffmpeg only for decoding purposes?

Hi,

the following change has been introduced for the 0.8.1-1 upload:

   * Change order of the toolame/mp3lame build dependency
 (Closes: #482509, #534076)

However, as already stated in the bug report, both toolame and twolame
are command line encoders that do not add any functionality to idjc,
especially not in their current role as build-depends. So this change
is rather pointless.

Please change the build-depends from twolame | libmp3lame-dev to
libtwolame-dev and apply the patch provided by peter green so that
we can at least have MP2 encoding in Debian. Users who aim to rebuild
idjc against libmp3lame in order to get MP3 support should be warned
to disable this patch before, though.

FLAC maintenance

2010-07-01 Thread Fabian Greffrath

Dear teams,

I am afraid I am currently the only active FLAC maintainer for quite
some time. This is not a general problem, as I use the FLAC codec on a
regular basis to archive my CDs, but I'd like to share the duty with
some other team mates. I also wouldn't object if the pkg-xiph team
(CCed) believes it is more appropriate if they take over the package.
Anyway, volunteers are welcome. ;)

My second concern is that I have prepared an updated package in the
master branch of our git repository. It merely fixes the two most
recent bugs that have been reported to the BTS (I have forwarded one
upstream, but they seem unresponsive to say the least). Furthermore I
have created a new branch called update-packaging-standards, in which
I have spent a bit more love on the package by converting it to quilt
and dh7. I think it is fine as it is, but could use some review and
testing (maybe it should go to experimental and the package from the
master branch should go to unstable).

What I want to say is: I'd appreciate some feedback and uploading of
either branch by one of our fellow DDs.

Thank you very much!
