Re: Invitation to join the Debian Multimedia Maintainers team

2011-06-06 Thread Jonas Smedegaard
Hi Jeremy (and fellow Multimedia Maintainers),

[sorry forthe lateresponse!]

On 11-06-02 at 07:50am, Jeremy Salwen wrote:
I'm confused, because there seem to be two standards by which one
might join the Debian Multimedia Maintainers team. The first seems to
be an informal one, by which someone who has created a couple of
debian packages is invited to join (Alessio extended to me a similar
offer). If I thought this were the final word, I would be happy to
join. However, when I go to the website to look into joining, I find
a second set of standards, including the items:

- are familiar with managing bugs in debian.
- agree to review other's work (patches and packages).

Neither of which I am okay with. I am not familiar with managing bugs
in debian. I simply don't know how to do anything besides send an
 email to the bug report.

As for the second point, I suppose I could technically review others'
work, but it probably wouldn't be much of a review. Much of this
stuff is over my head. If I were to look at the source of Ardour, for
instance, it would probably take me a week to make heads or tails of
 it.

The requirement about managing bugs is mostly aimed at contributors
*less* involved than you - in fact I am surprised by your comment: As
maintainer for a package officially part of Debian, you *must* be able
to handle bugs filed against it!

That other requirement about reviewing works of others really is about
interest in doing teamwork. Feel free to ask questions, but don't join
if you do not intend to contribute yourself. That's more fun for us all.

But both those requirements are about _interest_ in such work. We are
not an sxclusive club and we do not require university degrees or DD
membership for you to work with us.

Have a look at our mailinglist, or join our IRC channel. I am confident
that you will find us to be pretty nice people to hang out with :-D

ALSA and HDSPe AIO - Is this a debian multimedia list for video and sound?

indeed, this debian multimedia list deals with video and sound, though

You need Linux 2.6.39 to get the kernel module. It's available in Debian
unstable. Forget about everything else (alsa-drivers, alsa-lib or
whatsoever)

You really want alsa-tools 1.0.24.2. Only problem is: it's not released,
yet.

Checkout the git version and compile (only) the hdspmixer subdirectory.

If you like, talk to the ALSA maintainers to package a git snapshot.

Package: smplayer
Version: 0.6.9-3
Severity: important

Smplayer does not open files from directory if directory name is in Russian.

File itself is OK, I can use other utilities with it:

$ ls -l /home/me/Загрузки/Skyline\ BDRip-AVC\ x264\ Gambit.mkv
-rw-r--r-- 1 me me 2326977093 Май 22 17:44 /home/me/Загрузки/Skyline BDRip-AVC
x264 Gambit.mkv

Also mplayer will open the file. But if to try to use smplayer:

$ smplayer /home/me/Загрузки/Skyline\ BDRip-AVC\ x264\ Gambit.mkv

it won't. It behaves like no file name was passed to it.

Please note that Russian filenames is not a problem - smplayer can open it.
Only Russian directory name triggers it.

Problem appeared after last `apt-get dist-upgrade`.

P.S. Just tried version 0.6.9-4 - problem remains

But the problem seems to be, that it's a git version. Anyway, trying to
build all apps by once failed, but building every songle app one after
the other seems to work. I'll do it later.

I avoided building 2.6.39 for two reasons:
- the current patch-rt gives me all I need, especially in combination
with Jack2 from svn I got rid of hw midi jitter (0.0xms jitter, not
1.xms or what else should be inaudible, but is audible) Perhaps 2.6.39
is able to fit to my needs too, anyway, the current set up is proved to
work for my Ubuntu Maverick install.
- 2.6.29 might not work with the version of X that I might need for my
GeForce 7200 + Liftec monitor, to get 1152x864@90Hz. In the future I
need to switch to a display, but I'll keep the monitor as long as
possible. It's a pity that Linux drops old faithful equipment. We've got
enough trash on our planet and on orbit. Why not using gear that still
works?

Anyway, I wish to build ALSA tools for the current kernel and I'll build
2.6.39 too, it's important to get ALSA 1.0.24 completely.

OT: Does the HDSPe AIO currently work with 1024 only or is it possible
to decrease the frames/period? Latency isn't an issue for me, as long as
the sound quality should be good. I never heard the card I own since a
week :D and I'm in a hurry, because here are only 30 days (- one week)
to return the card if needed.

Cheers!

Ralf

Hi!

The switch in 1.3.0-1 to use unversioned package names for the shared
library was not correct. This disallows to have coinstallable library
packages with different SONAMEs. It will thus break on upgrade any
application linking against the old SONAME from a previous libois
version when the new libois version bumps it. It also further
complicates transitions.

Please revert that change.

Bug#629471: ois: FTBFS: .symbols file should account for architecture differences

2011-06-06 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: ois
Version: 1.3.0+dfsg0-2
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

Builds of ois are failing on most platforms due to differences in the
set of symbols it defines. I see you've tried to account for some
differences by specifying demangled names, but some symbols still
appear to be missing altogether, per

https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=ois

(Also, the kFreeBSD builds are failing because there's no linux/input.h.)

Could you please take a look?

Thanks!
