Excellent idea. AFAIUI, this instructs lintian to check for certain
strings in the binaries, which seems to be the right approach for
this. The chosen strings make sense to me after short cross checking
with the source.

Thanks for implementing this.

Andres, AFAIUI, we can and should now request the libav-extra source
package to be removed from debian/unstable, is this correct?

I think the best timing would be to wait until libav 0.8.1-4 reaches
wheezy, (which will probably require a hint for britney from the
release team, CC'ed for this reason) and then have libav-extra removed
from unstable as well.

Cheers,
Reinhard

Package: wavpack
Version: 4.60.1-1

This is relevant for various Debian/Ubuntu releases.

I noticed that on 32-bit (i386/i686) systems the executable
  wvunpack
only handles .wv files of size about 2 GB.
I'm using wavpack for compressing 96/32 wav-files of typical audio CD
length. The resulting .wv files sometimes exceed the 2GB limit.

Using the source package I could recompile wvunpack such that the problem is
resolved for me. But I suggest to change the debian build script such
that wvunpack can deal with large file by default.

Unfortunately, I'm not so familiar with the Debian build details to just
send a patch for the debian/rules file. But here is what I did.

# on some Ubuntu i686 version
apt-get source wavpack
cd wavpack-*
./configure --enable-mmx CC="gcc -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64"
make

# and to get a portable binary for various Debian/Ubuntu systems
cd cli
rm wvunpack
make # (to get an idea for the following line)
gcc -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -I../include -mmmx -g -O2 -o
.libs/wvunpack wvunpack-wvunpack.o wvunpack-utils.o wvunpack-md5.o
../src/.libs/libwavpack.a -lm -static

Dear Maintainer,

Please consider enabling hardening flags which are a release goal
for wheezy. For more information please have a look at [1], [2]
and [3].

debian/compat is already 9, so hardening flags are enabled by
default via dpkg-buildflags. The only problem is that the build
system (Makefile) doesn't respect compiler flags from the
environment. The attached patch fixes this by updating the
Makefile.

The following patch disables quiet builds so missing flags can be
detected easily:

diff -Nru alsaequal-0.6/debian/rules alsaequal-0.6/debian/rules
--- alsaequal-0.6/debian/rules  2012-01-12 21:52:28.0 +0100

 LIBDIR = lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)

+# Disable quiet builds.

+
 %:
dh $@

To check if all flags were correctly enabled you can use
`hardening-check` from the hardening-includes package:

$ hardening-check
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_equal.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_equal.so

 Position Independent Executable: no, regular shared library (ignored)
 Stack protected: no, not found!
 Fortify Source functions: yes (some protected functions found)
 Read-only relocations: yes
 Immediate binding: no not found!

(The stack protected warning is fine in this case, the flags are
correctly applied.)

Simon

Hello:

To make this work you could have done:

(Not sure why the email got sent before I was done.)

CPPFLAGS:=$(shell dpkg-buildflags --get CPPFLAGS)
CFLAGS:=$(shell dpkg-buildflags --get CFLAGS)
CXXFLAGS:=$(shell dpkg-buildflags --get CXXFLAGS)
LDFLAGS:=$(shell dpkg-buildflags --get LDFLAGS)

to the top or at least above the if statement.

I had made the change really quick but did not commit it since I
wanted to test it first with qemu first but by the time I finished I
had fallen asleep (took way longer to make qemu work than to compile,
heh).

Anyway reverting the optimization or adding the -mfpu flag works.

- Miguel

Bug#666756: Toonloop compiled with -Werror and new clutter causes warnings

2012-04-01 Thread Sjoerd Simons
Package: toonloop
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hey,

It seems toonloop compiles it releases with -Werror (bad, don't). When
testbuilding with clutter 1.10 there are several warnings because of
deprecations causing the compile to fail.

Toonloop compiles properly with new clutter when warning aren't treated as
errors. Example patch attached

Bug#666765: lintian: Add libav libraries to embedded-library check

2012-04-01 Thread Andres Mejia
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.6
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Embedded libav libraries should be checked for in the 'embedded-library' check.
Reasons for this are as follow.

 * libav is a heavily used multimedia library. Many multimedia related packages
   (apps, frameworks, etc.) use libav in one form or another.
 * libav sees at least 10 security related fixes each point release.
 * In Debian, it was already expected that no package should use an embedded
   copy of any of the libav libraries.

Attached is a patch that will add the libav libraries into the
'embedded-libraries' lintian check.

Subject: [PATCH] Add check for embedded libav/ffmpeg libraries. It seems that
 libav/ffmpeg gets at least 10 security fixes every point
 release. A point release seems to be made once every 2
 months. Given this, embedding the libav/ffmpeg libs in an
 app should now be an error.

Package: terminatorx
Version: 3.82-7
Severity: important

When running terminatorX (sid/i386 build 3.82-7) I am consistently
getting freezes (the UI stops responding) when opening Ogg Vorbis and MP3
files.

This is resolved on my system by rebuilding the package with the following
'configure' arguments in debian/rules:

./configure --host=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE) --build=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE) \
--prefix=/usr \
--mandir=/usr/share/man \
--enable-wav --enable-xsetpointer \
--enable-alsa --enable-jack --enable-oss \
--enable-mad --enable-vorbis \
--enable-suidroot --enable-capabilities \
--disable-sox --disable-ogg123 --disable-mpg123 \
gnomedatadir=/usr/share/ \
gnomepresent=yes

The resulting build has working Ogg Vorbis and MP3 support and does not
depend on sox, vorbis-tools or mpg321 either at build time or run time.

It would be great if this could be fixed in etch. Let me know if there's
anything more I can do to help. I can provide patches if necessary, but
that seemed rather overkill for such a simple matter.

Thanks!
