Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: handbrake
  Version : 0.9.1
  Upstream Author : Various; see
* URL : http://handbrake.m0k.org/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Rips and encodes DVD videos

Handbrake provides a friendly graphical interface for ripping DVD
videos and encoding them as video files. It can show a preview of
content before ripping, to verify titles and chapters. It can
deinterlace, crop, and scale video. It supports DVD subtitles by
encoding them directly in the video image.
..
Handbrake supports numerous formats and codecs:
 - File format: MPEG-4 (MP4), Matroska (MKV), Ogg (OGM), or AVI
 - Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer/rate
   encoding)
 - Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of
   several audio tracks)
..
Handbrake also provides a command-line interface, HandbrakeCLI.

Some notes on Handbrake:

* Its build system needs some serious work. It wants to download and
build all its dependencies at build time, and statically link to
those copies. (I have not actually managed to get it to build, due
to build errors in one of these libraries.) This will need to
change to support dynamically linking to system libraries.

* Some of the libraries it depends on do not exist in Debian due to
legal problems such as patent issues or anti-circumvention laws.
For libdvdcss, ideally it could do the same thing all the DVD
players in Debian do: use libdvdread (which Handbrake already does),
and let libdvdread pull in libdvdcss if installed. For encumbered
codecs, ideally it could pick up libraries if installed and disable
the corresponding codecs if not; however, if it cannot, then perhaps
it could have a DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=risky like ffmpeg.

* Build-Depends available in Debian: jam, liba52-0.7.4-dev,
  libavcodec-dev, libdvdread3-dev, libmpeg2-4-dev, libogg-dev,
  libvorbis-dev, libsamplerate0-dev

Re: Handbrake repackaging

2012-10-04 Thread Fabian Greffrath

Am 04.10.2012 06:32, schrieb Marc J. Driftmeyer:

Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick with Deb Multimedia as I personally
could give a rat's behind about mkv and with aac/mpeg4 they work out
just fine for my Mac world. Any chance you could provide a non-free
version? If not, then I only have one request:

No, it's currently impossible. The mp4v2 library currently used for
MP4 demuxing is licensed under the MPL. Having it linked against
GPL'ed code will make the resulting binary unredistributable.

The faac library currently used for AAC encoding is too non-free even
for Debian's non-free. We already tried to get it into the archive.

Please don't screw with the packaging priority so I have to reinstall
Deb Multimedia by hand each time, instead of a simple apt-get upgrade.
It's never wise to pee on your user base.

We don't screw with anything. It is just not of our priority to remain
compatible with an external repository whose maintainer gives a fsck
about remaining compatible with Debian in return.

I imagine you will ignore this request and I'll have to just keep
reinstalling it or I'll bug Christian Marillat to make sure there is a
workaround.

Thanks for peeing on us in advance instead.

Dear Reinhard, Fabian, Andres and Rogério,

Thank you sincerely for bringing handbrake to Debian.

Great work, I know how challenging it was.

I hope you'll excuse me for committing few improvements without discussing it
with you first.
It should be OK but please feel free to revert if necessary.

Cheers,
Dmitry.

Fantastic, thank you for correcting to Breaks.
I wasn't sure about it as I thought it could be too strong under some
circumstances like when we're not transcoding DVD etc...

I'll remember your advise -- thanks for sharing your knowledge. :)

Cheers,

You're welcome.

I think the most complicated part is still ahead: Finding a solution
how to encode AAC into .mp4 to unbreak the shipped profiles. That's
challenging, but I don't think it was impossible.

Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.0-6
Justification: renders package unusable
Severity: grave

After last actualization of VLC I started experiencing serious
problems with playing video files - .flv, .mp4, .webm and possibly
others (didn't test).
In fact - video files are not playing at all, and even when they are
playing it is with serious performance problems (on Pentium D T3400 it
consumes ~90% of one core). Also there is problem with quitting from
it whenever there was an attempt to play video file (only kill -9 does
the work). Worth of note is fact that I'm not using pulseaudio (nor
willing to do so).

Package: vlc-plugin-notify
Version: 2.0.0-1
Severity: important

Coin,

After upgrading from 1.1.13-1+b1, the (default) interface window
opens, but stays empty without any widget but the background color,
and the whole application stays blocked forever (see the attached
debug logs). These two tests work perfectly using xine or mplayer.

Using 'cvlc --control qt4' i was able to have it open properly. I then
found disabling libnotify support solved my problem. libnotify4 was
not upgraded since a while, worked perfectly with 1.1.13-1+b1, and
still works for other applications.

Tell me if you need more info.

Regards.

Subject: [Bug 1062039] [NEW] vlc : Depends: fonts-freefont-ttf but it
is not installable
To: sujiannm...@gmail.com

Public bug reported:

VLC from ppa for Precise depends on a package (fonts-freefont-ttf) that
doesn't exist in Precise:

# cat videolan-stable-daily-precise.list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu precise main

http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-i386/Packages
Package: vlc
Priority: optional
Section: video
Installed-Size: 3391
Maintainer: Debian Multimedia Maintainers

Architecture: i386
Version: 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1
Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (=
2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1), vlc-plugin-pulse (=
2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1), xdg-utils
Replaces: vlc-data (<< 1.1.5), vlc-nox (<< 2.0.2)
Suggests: videolan-doc
Provides: mp3-decoder
Depends: fonts-freefont-ttf

The correct package in Precise may be "ttf-freefont".

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
