Bug#689862: gnome-mplayer: often segfaults inside iceweasel with MPEG, WMV, and AVI videos

2012-10-07 Thread Francesco Poli (wintermute)
Package: gnome-mplayer
Version: 1.0.6-1
Severity: normal

Hello Debian Multimedia Maintainers,
since long ago, I have experienced frequent segmentation faults by
gnome-mplayer, when using it inside iceweasel (with gecko-mediaplayer
and xul-ext-noscript installed).

Steps to reproduce the bug:

  0) start iceweasel

  1) open an MPEG, WMV or AVI video in a new tab, for instance:
 http://content.funny-base.com/videos2/trunkmonkey01.wmv

  2) the NoScript extension blocks the video; right-click on the page
and select Temporarily allow content.funny-base.com from the
 NoScript submenu

  3) the control buttons of the gecko-mediaplayer interface appear, but
the video is not shown; /var/log/kern.log shows that gnome-mplayer
 segfaulted:

 gnome-mplayer[6593]: segfault at 4 ip 7f78e8bc863f sp 7fffd6a7f5b0
error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.3200.3[7f78e8b62000+f5000]

  4) reload the iceweasel tab ([Ctrl+R])

  5) the video is shown, without any further segfault

  6) select Revoke Temporary Permissions from the NoScript submenu

This issue seems to happen with most MPEG, WMV, and AVI videos, both
when the video is opened in a dedicated tab (as described above)
and when the video is embedded in a web page area (as in
http://www.funny-base.com/videos/792-trunkmonkey01.html )

Please note that using mplayer directly does not seem to cause any
segfault:

  $ mplayer http://content.funny-base.com/videos2/trunkmonkey01.wmv

The video is shown without any glitch.

Please try to reproduce the bug and investigate its cause.
Please fix the issue and/or forward this bug report upstream,
as appropriate.

Thanks for your time!

I can't reproduce the segfault with or without noscript installed. So
it'd be great if you could provide as with a backtrace. Otherwise I
don't think there is much we can do.

First of all, thanks a lot for your prompt reply!
It's really appreciated, believe me.

 So
it'd be great if you could provide as with a backtrace. Otherwise I
don't think there is much we can do.

Please help me: how can I obtain a backtrace?

I suppose I should install gnome-mplayer-dbg and libglib2.0-0-dbg.
Then I should have gnome-mplayer run inside gdb, but how?
Should I run the entire iceweasel within gdb?
Or what else?

I have just (re-)read the HowToGetABacktrace wiki page [1], but it does
not seem to talk about getting backtraces for programs invoked by
browser plugins...

The mjpeg programs are a set of tools that can do recording of videos and

It should be great if someone can package this tools for debian, a software
which I'm packaging depend on this tools.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=467228

Its already packaged in ubuntu multiverse:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/mjpegtools

There is also a version in debian-multimedia:
http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/package/mjpegtools.php

I don't understand why mjpegtools is in ubuntu multiverse because as far as I
know, ubuntu multiverse is non-free software, but mjpegtools seems to be free
software as its dependencies.

The best way to obtain a core dump from iceweasel plugins I came across
so far is to do the following:

Run:
 $ ulimit -c unlimited
 $ iceweasel
and reproduce the crash. You should end up with a core dump in $(pwd).
Run
 $ gdb /usr/bin/gnome-mplayer core
to inspect it and get a back trace.

Good, I've just done so (after installing gnome-mplayer-dbg and

The attached file is the log of the thread apply all bt full gdb

I hope it may help to pinpoint the issue.

Thanks a lot for your kind assistance!

Thanks for the backtrace. According to the traceback this looks a lot like
LP#929168. Since multiple persons are experiencing similar crashes, I'd
say it's reproducible and I just happen to be lucky.

 Thanks for the backtrace.

Thanks to you for your kind assistance and for forwarding the bug
upstream.
Once again, this is really appreciated.

You lucky boy! ;-)

Seriously, I hope that the issue may be fixed soon by the upstream
developers.

Thanks for your time.
Bye.
