Thanks a lot Anton. With this analysis, I'm reassinging this bug to
the xpra package.

Dmitry, I have only guessed the version of the xpra package. Please
update the version information of this bug as approriate.

Cheers,
Reinhard

 Hi,
 a Libav developer here.

This is really a bug/abuse of Libav API in xpra -- the file x264lib.c uses an
uninitialized AVFrame on stack. This has always been forbidden by Libav API,
 but
used to work until some changes a few months ago. Functions
 avcodec_alloc_frame() and avcodec_free_frame() (in release 9 only, av_free()
 in
0.8 and earlier) must be used to allocate and free an AVFrame.

Attached is a patch that fixes it.

Bug#699831: vlc(1) produces --help with ANSI escapes, even if TERM=dumb

2013-02-05 Thread Ivan Shmakov
Package: vlc-nox
Version: 2.0.3-4

Even with TERM set to ‘dumb’, vlc(1) and cvlc(1) still try to
produce a colorful --help output (presumably using some
hardwired escape sequences) on a TTY.

This is particularly annoying when running from an
“application-embedded” Shell (such as Emacs' M-x shell, or
M-! ⟨command⟩ ), which typically employ a pseudo terminal.

Consider, e. g. (with ESC's replaced with ^['s):

$ echo $TERM
dumb
$ infocmp
# Reconstructed via infocmp from file: /lib/terminfo/d/dumb
dumb|80-column dumb tty,
am,
cols#80,
bel=^G, cr=^M, cud1=^J, ind=^J,
$ cvlc --help
VLC media player 2.0.3 Twoflower (revision 2.0.2-93-g77aa89e)
Usage: vlc [options] [stream] ...
…
^[[0;1mNo matching module found. Use --list or --list-verbose to list available
modules.^[[0m
^[[32;1m
 Audio
^[[0m^[[0;1m --audio, --no-audio^[[0m^[[34;1mEnable audio (default
enabled)
$

Naturally, such output should always respect terminfo(5) (or
termcap(5)) settings, and no attempt should be made to output
any “fancy” escape sequences that aren't mentioned there.

Bug#699832: vlc lib directory is inferred from /proc/*/maps, with no (documented?) way to override

2013-02-05 Thread Ivan Shmakov
Package: vlc-nox
Version: 2.0.3-4

In order to allow for “relocation”, vlc(1) (cvlc(1)) reads the
/proc/${PID}/maps file to infer the ‘lib’ directory location.

This fails, however, for Debian Live systems, as there ‘maps’
will point to somewhere on the bottom layer of the Aufs stack
(as used for the root FS), typically mounted to
/lib/live/mount/medium, and not to /usr/lib/vlc.

Therefore, should any additional VLC plugins be installed during
such a system's uptime, they won't be available to VLC. Worse
still, an attempt to perform an upgrade of the VLC packages may
leave VLC in an inconsistent state, with an upgraded binary
trying to access the plugins belonging to the version the Debian
Live image in question was initially made. (My guess is that
the use of the “persistence” Debian Live feature may complicate
the things even further.)

Obviously, there should be a way for the user to override the
‘lib’ directory location inferred from the ‘maps’ file contents.
(Ideally, such a feature is to be activated automagically when
VLC is used on a Debian Live system.)

Hello,

Unfortunately, that's not a very helpful description and the debug log cannot
really point out why VLC would dead lock. For that kind of bug, we really need
a symbolic threaded stack trace of the jammed process, as gdb can provide.

2013-02-05 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont

Hello,

Unfortunately, changing volume with ALSA is intrinsically slow because ALSA
does not support volume internally. If this is a problem for you, you can
either reduce the VLC caching values, or use PulseAudio.

I believe there are no ways to fix this without changing the configuration,
hence wontfix.

 reopen 665732
 Package: vlc
 Version: 2.0.1-4+b2

I reopened the bug because it's not just about a minimal latency or a
long standing behavior. Under certain circumstances, the delay is in the
range of 10th of seconds and this definitely wasn't the case with pre
2.0 vlc. I found a report[1] in the vlc forum which sounds like the same
problem so we should try to find the culprit.

 My observation so far:

 * I absolutely can not recognize any delay with ogg audio files.
 * volume change while playing wav or mp3 introduces a variable delay of
multiple seconds - I even had the 30 second experience like in the
   linked forum thread.
 * This is not only related to the volume change but the whole GUI is
stalled. No reaction on menu or button press actions.
 * With some other cpu load, the delay will vanish (or at least be
minimized). E.g. playing another file in one instance and playing the
delaying mp3 in another instance (no dbus invoked); or simple do a
   `cat /dev/zero /dev/null`
 * If the system is idling again (apart from playing mp3), the delay is
   back again, too.
 * Doing some click-e-di-click on the desktop while waiting for the GUI and
sound to respond causes the GUI to react and the volume to change.
 * No remarkable delay with the vlc web interface
 * and last but not least: Pause the song, change volume, resume playing.
No delay except for the pause-play part. ;-)

For me it looks like some event/timer stuff isn't working as it should
be and maybe it's just only the Qt-interface?

 Regards,
 Dirk

Hello,

From the kernel message, this is probably a bug in the VLC TS demuxer, though
it could be a bug in libdvbpsi as well. Unfortunately, without a sample MPEG-
TS dump to reproduce the issue, or at the very least a symbolic stack trace of
the crash, we cannot investigate this bug further.

For ogg files, the duration is shown in the playlist only when the file
is being played; it disappears as soon as another file is played. MP3
files do not have this problem.

Computing the approximate duration of an Ogg file is not quite as simple as
that of an MP3. VLC is currently unable to compute the length immediately when
the file is opened/preparsed.

The menus don't have this problem: the background is the same, but the

 See attached snapshot.

That seems like a problem with your Qt theme. I fail to see a VLC bug here.

Bug#641236: vlc: ogv video gets vertical pink bars when resized on powerpc

2013-02-05 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
reassign 641236 libswscale0
thanks

Le lundi 12 septembre 2011 01:35:31, Daniel Kahn Gillmor a écrit :
 Package: vlc
 Version: 1.1.11-2+b2
 Severity: normal

Using vlc to display a 640x480 .ogv video on a powerpc G5 machine, i
found that if i resized the video, bright pink vertical bars appear on
the screen. attached is a screenshot of it at full size and at
 half-size.

From the screenshots, the picture is decoded correctly, and rendered by VLC
with the correct pitch. So it has to be a bug in scaling or color space
conversion. Make sure you did not install unofficial FFmpeg packages from third
party repositories.

Reassigning to libswscale anyway.

Error description:

Hello Maintainer/Upstream,

I run an AMD Sempron 2200+ with 3 GByte of memory (PC2700) and
if I transcode a DVD (it was Chapter 2, 50:47) at the end it
begin to loop but nothing more ist written to disk and VLC begin
to eat the memory and the swap which let my computer crash.

Since I have production systems, I do not find this realy funny.

Bug#695523: vlc mute music when pause playing

2013-02-05 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
tags 695523 + moreinfo
thanks

Hello,

Please provide the verbose VLC logs (vlc -vv) when you reproduce the problem.
I cannot pinpoint the issue with so little factual informations.

Also note that some similar bugs were addressed in VLC 2.0.5, so it could help
to try with Debian unstable too...

Thanks in advance, best regards,

Hello,

This looks like a bug in the VLC TS demuxer, or possibly in libdvbpsi.
Unfortunately, we are unable to reproduce it and forward it upstream.

Could you please provide a small dump of a TS stream that triggers the
problem?

Thanks in advance, best regards,

I recently upgraded vlc from 1.1.13-1+b1 to 2.0.3-2.
I am using it to play back rtp:// streams forwarded by this software:
 https://github.com/klammerj/dvb-vulture

AFAIK The stream contains a valid PCR...
When the stream composition changes (by tuning to different service..)
the vlc segfaults. It did not happen with previously installed version.
The vlc log and a gdb backtrace are attached.

We are using VLC to multicast-stream a DVB-T signal as MPEG transport stream on
our local network. When VLC is just started, top reports a resident memory
consumption 270 MB. Eventually this value rises to around 850 MB, after which
the computer begins to swap heavily, which causes a huge packet loss in the
transport stream, and makes it impossible to view the stream.

The command used start vlc is:
vlc -I dummy --ts-es-id-pid --ttl 4 --daemon --programs 101,102,217
dvb-t:adapter=0:frequency=71400:bandwidth=8 --dvb-caching=800 --sout

As a workaround we restart VLC via a cron job.

Hello,

You can override/extend the paths that VLC searches for plugins using the
VLC_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable. Note that adding plugins while running
is not supported (they will be ignored).

If that's not enough, I don't really see any alternative to patching VLC in
Debian. Union FS is a hack and TBH, I have no plan to support this in upstream
VLC especially not unless it gets accepted in the upstream Linux kernel.

Regards,

Le mardi 5 février 2013 19:44:17, Ivan Shmakov a écrit :

Hello,

The provided log clearly shows USB level kernel errors, and the STREAMON ioctl
failing. Maybe the hardware is faulty or the USB bus overloaded. In any case,
I fail to see how that kind of error would be a VLC bug.

Besides, VLC does not care at all about two webcam devices at the same time.
There are just to separate instance of the VLC process. It only makes a
difference to the kernel.

Feel free to close this bug.

Hello,

The problem is not very clear from the description. It seems the reporter is
trying to use the same ALSA device from multiple applications. This cannot
work; not really a bug but a design limitation of ALSA.

I'd suggest installing PulseAudio to work around that.

Closing anyway.

Playing QuickTime movies in vlc causes one of the following three
things to happen, seemingly arbitrarily, every time playback is
started from a stopped state:

  a) One new VLC (X11 output) window is opened.
The video output appears in the main window, meaning I can't see
the first few seconds of it because the second window appears on top
 of the first.

  b) One new VLC (X11 output) window is opened.
The video output appears in the new window, which I can see, but the
controls are still in the main window. The main window's video region
shows a black rectangle which sometimes flickers blue when I focus it.

  c) Two new VLC (X11 output) windows are opened.
The video output appears in one of the windows, and the other window
contains a black rectangle similar in dimension to the one that appears
in the main window in case (b). The main window's video region shows
a small black space of the default width of the window.

Sidenote: Subtitles don't work. I am assuming that the package fails to specify

It's reproducible by dragging the slide bar.

The list of subtitles that vlc displays does not match the subtitle
language shown in the film. I mean say a film has: Danish, Swedish,
Norwegian and English subtitles. If I choose Norwegian then I may get
Swedish and if I choose English I get Norwegian... I have noticed this
with different dvds.

Hi,

 My .asoundrc has:
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

I sometimes kill pulseaudio to release the DSP.

When pulseaudio is stopped and I run vlc *.mp3, the first file plays
fine, but vlc crashes on the next file with the following backtrace:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

As a result the audio track is not selected correctly.

Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.e-2.3+lenny1

I discovered this problem with a patched version of kaffine-mozilla
and the movies available from URL:http://www.filmarkivet.no/open/.
Kaffine is unable to play the movies. After using kaffine-mozilla to
locate the movie URL, I tested it in vlc too. It fail. :(

To replicate the issue, call vlc like this:

  vlc 'rtsp://qtsrv1.ella.no/filmarkivet/movie/p_40648.mp4'

It print this message and play only the sound:

  VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
[0295] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `h264'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
  [0273] main playlist: stopping playback

Please get this video working with vlc.

Happy hacking,

Hi,

VLC can produce invalid transport streams[0] when transcoding certain
types of film.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Download the 1080p h.264 mov of Big Buck Bunny.
2) In VLC, Open File...
3) Select the file, and select Stream/Save
4) Select 'File' and enter a saved name
5) Ensure that you are transcoding to a52

This produces a Target of:
sout=#transcode{acodec=a52,ab=192,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=file,mux=ts,dst=output.ts}}

In the output file, the PTS DTS about 50% of the time. In our case
with the Big Buck Bunny file, 6558 times (out of about 15K). This means
almost half of the time stamps are wrong because they ask to present a
picture on the display at a time precedent the time when it has to be
decoded.

Thanks,
Neil

[0] Well, while not tecnically invalid, nothing will be able to play
them.

I have my wm (awesome w/xcompmgr) set to make non-focused windows set to
80% opacity. When vlc loses focus, and thus has its opacity changed,
the video goes blank.

The same can be tested by installing the transset package, issuing
transset .8 and clicking on the vlc window.

Hi,

when playing a 11025Hz 16bit standard WAV file with VLC, the first 3s
play fine, but it turns to loud white noise after that. Please note that
VLC usually works fine on my system.

This file plays fine in other applications such as Rezound.

Here is the file (beware the loud noise!):
http://sound.samalyse.org/tapemachine/droidx/test-11Khz.wav

This was produced with libsndfile 1.0.21. When I convert this file to
44100Hz with sox, VLC plays it without problem. But if I convert it back
to 11025Hz the bug is back.

Olivier

Dear debian and vlc users and devleoppers,

I just come across a bug in the luahttp interface of vlc( vlc -I
luahttp ). When browsing directories that contain a symbolic link that
does not point to an existing file, the lua http interface does not
report anything thing (not even . or ..). Removing the broken link
shows the list of file properly. adding any broken link makes the list
of file disappear again.

The bug is perfectly reproducible on my machine. I do not believe
there is any debian specific in this bug. Could this bug be confirmed
and forwarded upstream?

I can provide additionnal details if needed.

Thank you.

Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6-svn20061012.debian-5etch1
Severity: normal

When I start playing an ogg theora movie from an arbitrary position in
time, the video output is mangled until it reaches a key-frame.

This problem occurs for instance when you skip pieces of the movie.

This problem does not occur with gstreamer+theora or vlc+xvid.

The theora files I play are generated with ffmpeg2theora.

Package: vlc

vlc in Lenny eats 20-30% more CPU than the previous version on
same hardware. Using a DVD rip of Planet Earth as a test

System | Lenny | Etch
P3/1200 + Nvidia | 50-70% CPU | 30-50%
P3/900 + Trident | 100% CPU, unusable | 70% with some skipping
Geode/1000 + SiS | 70%+ CPU, skips | 30% CPU, works fine

Whatever change there was in-between it is sufficient to push older
systems or various underclocked/fanless systems into the unusable
zone.

I tried building 1.00 from unstable with same results. CPU usage is
same as in Lenny.

Bug#699864: mplayer2 from experimental doesn't work with smplayer

2013-02-05 Thread Rogério Brito
Package: mplayer2
Version: 2.0-701-gd4c5b7f-1
Severity: normal

Hi.

Even though mplayer2 from experimental breaks smplayer from sid, I'm only
setting the severity as normal.

I have only tested this with smplayer, but I think that it may apply to
other frontends.

In particular, mplayer2 breaks compatibility with previous versions with:

,
| /usr/bin/mplayer -noquiet -nofs -nomouseinput -lavdopts threads=4
-sub-fuzziness 1 -identify -slave -vo gl_nosw -ao pulse -nokeepaspect
-framedrop -dr -double -input nodefault-bindings:conf=/dev/null
-stop-xscreensaver -wid 50331683 -monitorpixelaspect 1 -ass -embeddedfonts
-ass-line-spacing 0 -ass-font-scale 1 -ass-styles
/home/rbrito/.config/smplayer/styles.ass -fontconfig -font DejaVu Sans

Ideally, it would be nice if deprecated options were just ignored for
compatibility with other programs.

Regards,

Rogério Brito.
