Bug#720440: mpg123: mpg123 does not build LFS wrappers on kfreebsd-i386

2013-08-28 Thread Thomas Orgis
Am Wed, 28 Aug 2013 01:33:08 +0200
schrieb Thomas Orgis thomas-fo...@orgis.org:

But let me try to get my own logic straight again.

Damn, I shouldn't write such stuff late at night, the brain torn
between wildly differing problems and the urge to fall into hibernation.

Current lfs_wrap.c is hardcoded to [no suffix]-_64 with long arguments
on [no suffix]. That is still correct...

That is not correct. The mpg123 header specifies off_t as argument.
When off_t is always 64 bits (could you possibly set
_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=32 ?!), there is no justification for _32 functions
at all! So, you only want lfs_alias for [no suffix] - _64. You dont't
want lfs_wrap. That eases the problem, actually. Just make sure _not_
to include lfs_wrap and define _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 in configure for
lfs_alias. That should just work ...

Alrighty then,

Thomas

I suppose everything is possible. I'm not sure how, though.

I think libav compiles optimized code that is optionally loaded. How does
that work?

   2. Managing patches: it looks to me like the new workflow makes it
better to make changes directly to the sources (by cherry-picking
the appropriate commits/ merging the appropriate debian-specific
branches) and setting single-debian-patch in local-options. Has
   anyone tried this?

I still favor quilt patches - and don't follow how tying our git to
upstream git renders that inferior: I consider it two separate
Worlds - one using git and another using tarballs and patch files.

I guess I see the main benefit of the new workflow precisely that the
separate worlds become one. Taking a patch from upstream is as simple
as a cherry-pick, forwarding a patch becomes a pull request of a topic
branch (or committing directly, if one is also part of upstream). My
take is that seeing the debian package as a slightly edited branch of
upstream makes a lot of sense.

If you accept the above premise, then the single-debian-patch option
seems very useful (applied in local-options, so that NMUs don't
  break).

Ok. We then do not value tarballs and patches the same.

I'm confused. Tarballs are preserved, and patches are still available,
although at the git repository. AFAICS, there is no data loss in the
mechanism I'm describing, am I wrong?

 Upstream of caps wishes that.

AFAICT, caps already enables SSE by default... that's why it currently FTBFS
everywhere except on (kfreebsd-)amd64 [0]. This seems to be fixed in the new
upstream release (currently in git) though, which includes the #ifdef __SSE__
checks.

So IMO there's no need for you to do anything, since SSE already gets enabled
only where it's supported (in the upstream version currently in git).

Cheers

 Hi,

can we build package which having SSE optimization enabled on some archs?
 Upstream of caps wishes that.

AFAICT, caps already enables SSE by default... that's why it currently FTBFS
everywhere except on (kfreebsd-)amd64 [0]. This seems to be fixed in the new
upstream release (currently in git) though, which includes the #ifdef
 __SSE__
 checks.

So IMO there's no need for you to do anything, since SSE already gets enabled
only where it's supported (in the upstream version currently in git).

Debian is supposed to support i486 computers. What happens if caps
detects SSE in the buildd? i386 binaries should not have such
optimizations by default.
